Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

aging fly fisherman

the somerset fly show next week.what is the average age of the attendees?when i go most of the males are either bald or grey haired.where are all the younger male fisherman?

Maybe they're smarter than us. Admission price with no real deals on the inside to see stuff they can look up on the internet. Just a guess.

Also, some of the younger males have family obligations, and no money to spend. I know that the amount of time I had available for fishing related activities dropped way off after I first got married. Widowed, kid grown, that's no longer a problem. I think this has always been the case with fly fishing.

Honestly if I were not tying in this show with my club I would not attend. Nothing really there that is barganed price or worth seeing for the price of admission. I can buy fly tying materials on line and go see all the rods that I want to buy at a store and cast it without a crowd. I guess after seeing this show year after year for twelve years now, I am bored. I am not in need of a guide and have fun planning my own trips out. The only two stands for me to look at is FeatersMC by John Mc and Charlie Collins. After that it's the same old thing.

I think younger people in general do not embrace the same things we older
(62) guys did. Look at things like Boy Scouts, I used to belong to a troop of
50 members and we did all kinds of cool stuff, today the same troop has 15 kid and they dont do half the stuff we did. Look at the TU meetings, they also lack large members of youth. Today they get their kicks playing on the computer. Times have changed.

maybe the young guys are the bald ones !!! and the grey hair is the old farts....lol

I'm not going this year either, been going for years. It is the same old show, over and
over. Way overpriced and overrated. This old guy will stay home and tie flies.

Complain, complain, complain. That's all most people do anymore, young or old. I'm 36, gonna shell out the $15 (oh the horror, as if that's a lot of money), enjoy a few seminars, stroll through the aisles, pickup an item or two, shoot the shit with some folks and go home. My 65 yr old father is going too, he'll probably have some complaints (like any good old timer, he usually does.)

Used to go to the show but have fished instead the last few. I've enjoyed avoiding the crowds at the show and having the water to myself. The show's alright, but time on the water is better for me. BTW, I'm 34.

Well, I missed the last years show and hope to get something out of this one cause I've been looking foward to it all year.. As far as the aging fisherman, embrace them, talk to them, respect them cause you can really learn alot from them. I hope to find some good deals on maybe a new reel and some fly tying materials and meet Lefty. See ya there.. I hope you all enjoy the show and I will be bringing my gear cause im gonna head to the river afterward.:beer::ttiwwp:
