What are some good streams near Philly?

upyun

Just finished a River Runs Through it!
I know its probably an oxymoron, but are there any good trout streams near philly? I hear the Little Lehigh is good as well as Valley Creek.

Anything else?

Right in Fairmont Park is the Wissahixon for a quick fix. At lot of Philly guys hit the Lehigh Valley limestoners (Little Lehigh, Saucon, Monacacy, Bushkill, Cedar etc) or ones a little closer like Valley or Cook's Ck. Little limestoners dot PA Dutch country. Most have real sediment problems, but a handful are being brought back to life. The Poconos is a little farther with the Bushkill, Tobyhanna, Lehigh, Brodhead, and Pohopoco (a tail water) being popular.

Basically you need to go to the Mountains or a limestoner to find cool water.

Charlie Meck's guides for PA are usually good. Check out Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission site for lots of info.

Thanks Jeff

I've heard that the Wissahiccon in Fairmount Park is pretty tough for fishing since that particular part of the creek is pretty heavily fished.

Now, I'm guessing that besides the Wissahiccon in Fairmount Park, Valley creek and Cook's Creek are the 2 closest streams near Philly? I'm assuming Valley Creek is accessible in Valley Forge National Park right? Where is Cook's Creek?

Has anyone ever fished Pennypack Creek?

cooks creek is all private water, even though the state list it...you have to ask to fish it..right now its under alot of stress, someone decided to change the course of the stream and got caught....

I read about that. I wonder who in this day and age would decide to reroute a trout stream from a neighbors property to their own. That would take incredible arrogance, stupidity, or a combination of both. A tiny bit of Cooks Creek is in Theodore Roosevelt state park, and there are trout there (although the climb down can be tough)

Valley Creek is accessible in Valley Forge Park...and some other places as well.

It gets a fair amount of pressure, and has extremely spooky wild browns - the kind (literally) where you can be 20 feet downstream of a pool, see a fish holding in quiet water, point it out to a friend, and spook the fish. It's a very technical, mostly limestone stream.

Some folks view it as "challenging" (and therefore fun); others view it as insane.

It's easier, obviously, if you hit a hatch.

Catch and release only (major PCB pollution upstream make the fish dangerous to eat).

The PFBC provides a great deal of information about finding wild trout streams on their website. You can find a good into and links to their various resources on www.wildtroutstreams.com . Click on "streams" and then the map of PA.

New Spot

WTS: Have you ever fished it in late spring Lad? I may have to give it a shot.

Click on the other thread "Philly" and I put directions to Pennypack creek which they stock with trout. I haven't fished PA yet since I've had car troubles and since I've had to work at the hospital on weekends recently due to depleted man power.

There are other places such as Darby Creek and Ridley Creek which are stocked with trout as well. Ridley Creek also has a fly fishing only section that is a delayed harvest section.

The wissahickon is a no go right now.
