Tying the infamous pink worm

Johnny Utah

You're no daisy
Here a very simple and deadly fly pattern. Devolved by a Pa gentlemen who goes by the name Fred Bridges. Enjoy.

FF, I see you are flexing your brain again round here...

Sick n tired of talking to sheep?

Yuz just bout had enuff, haven't ya, farm boy?

Junk flies don't work for just stockies. Try a crazy fly when the wild browns in PAs limestoners are giving you fits. Muskie shrimp, Honey Bugs, chamois worms, blue egg flies, green weenies have been know to stick a wild fish or too.

Junk flies the same as beads? I saw no injection molding machine in Johnny's video - only hand wrapping materials around a hook as it should be. No added weight either.

And this raises a question that the old wet flies also raises. Have we gone over too far in the match the hatch theory on flies. Why does every fly you tie one supposed to look like a bug to you (whether it looks like a bug to the fish is something else). Some days it is more effective and fun to go with what your gut and your experience tell you to do. Add a little mystery/art to fly fishing. Some days the science project approach is deadly; other days the oddist things work and you can't figure out why. But isn't that part of the fun?

Rant over.

u know in some circles a pink worm for trout fishing is almost as bad as a bead for steelhead.

I fished today after work and the first fly I tied on a was the "IPW". This was my first attempt at fishing the pink worm after hearing how great they are. With no luck I tied on a different fly ( tangerine egg) and proceeded to catch 4 bows. Moved up-stream and caught one more on the egg. I could see the fish sitting in the tail-out so I decided to try to the pink worm, again no luck. Put a orange bead PT nymph on caught 3 more. Then it got dark and I left.
I can't buy a fish on a pink worm :(. And it's definitely not the angler :)

Nice Vid BTW! Good stuff!!

John,

How dare you.

Well my buddy is going to be out all day today and I gave some to him last night to try. But we might need you to show us how fish worms lol!
We shall see.........

The ways of junk flies and stocked rainbows are as mysterious as with any flies. There is no fly that works all the time. I switch up and find what works - and then a fly can stop working after a while and you need to switch again.

Couple of weeks ago word on the Salmon River the San Juan worm was hot.
