Tour de Saturday

FIN-ITE 34

Well-known member
Saturday morning I set out for a tour of PA streams with a final stop at our NJ Pequod.

I had hoped to begin nymphing and finish up with a a little dry fly action, however the day was to be about bottom dredging with only an occasional splashy rise throughout the day.

My first stop was at stream S where I landed a good half dozen browns including a very nice 19" hook jawed male.

And another brown that measured in at around 17"

All fish at stream S were taken on a scud pattern of one form or another in sizes from 12-16.

My next stop was at stream B, where I fished another stretch that is not stocked. This stretch yielded another good number of wild browns from 8" up to 15".

All the fish at this location were taken on a size 16 purple UV ribbed with orange hot spot.

I headed up to stream M where I had expected to see some fish rising late in the afternoon, but except for a good number of caddis in the air, I saw no fish rising. I took a couple of small rainbows on the nymph pattern mentioned above.

My last stop was back in NJ at the infamous Pequod TCA stretch. I knew I was back in NJ as these were the first anglers I had seen all day, along with the blue plastic worm containers and discarded drink bottles littered along the river.

I netted a number of smaller rainbows and one solid fish of about 17" that actually managed to put a bend in the rod equal to the smaller browns of PA.

All these fish were taken on a size 18 purple midge with orange hot spot.

I too managed a few hours yesterday on the Peapod, fish seemed to be taking anything brown in the the size 14 range and throughout the water column. Even landed a "Catch a Winner" tagged bow.:sun_smile

You'll have to post a pic of the certificate and patch you will receive for the "Hook -A Winner" catch.

Just a question...maybe a dumb one.
You have all these great places in Pennsylvanian to fish...beautiful fish btw....why the hell would you go to the pissquest to fish?

It was on my way home and I figured that after such a great day in PA, I would slap myself back to reality with some gangland style fishing. I don't think I fished the Pequod at all last season and I was curious to see if the river had changed in that section. It hadn't, right down to the discarded blue bait containers and the guy who hauls around a tripod to video himself fishing.

That was dangerously close to a fishing post. I thought that could get you banned here on NEFF? Carbombinator must be getting soft in his old age. Either that or he found religion......

I happened to get out on the Farmington this Saturday. Morning was slow but Hendricksons were coming off in full force by 2pm. Caught three fat browns. Got two on drys but they were refusing duns and gorging on emergers. Had about a dozen refusals on my drys. This was my fourth time there in two years. If you have the time I highly recommend the trip to go there. The river is just gorgeous and the popular pools can get a little crowded, but you can easily find open stretches if you get into the forest. The trout have their PHDs available upon request.

A great river, I agree. I call it the West Branch Light because it has both wild and stocked fish, but the tailwater makes it what it is just like the upper East or the entire West Branch are. The Ridge & Valley TU chapter is talking about scheduling a weekend trip there this year at some point. I just get a kick out of the one local fly shop (name?) that was pushing size 28 flies and 8X tippet. I caught fish all day on a size 10 Iso Comparadun fished on 4X :). Too much "Orvis mentality" anglers up that way believe you need a 2 weight with 7X or 8X tippet........but a very nice river.

HAHA. I have to agree with you. Upcountry Sportfishing. They sold me some 6x tippet last July and told me I should probably get some 7x or 8x.
My biggest trout the other day took a size 14 Rainbow warrior on about 2ft of 5x trailed from a sinking leader. It was flouro tippet though. :) The others were on sz 12 Hendricksons, Catskill style that I tied. They weren't the prettiest belles at the ball but they hooked em.
