The word "lad" was the tip off for ya wasn't it...

I want to know where his shop is so not only can I test out a bunch of rods, but I can see how retail is done successfully. :)

PM me, CK if you're not lookin' to advertise...

For the past two years I have been using Cabelas leaders and tippet made by climax. This year I am trying Frog Hair.

I think I am going back to my cabelas leaders and tippet. I used Frog Hair and I have not seen any difference other then price.

Wow! This thread is ANCIENT.. Anyways..

I vote Orvis all the way, Ive been told their florocarbon is some of the highest quality floro you can buy. All their floro is made in Japan and one of their factorys got damaged during last march's tsunami.

This is why the price of all Orvis' florocarbon products have gone up in price...

My 2 cents:
For NY Trib salmon/Steelhead fishing hands down the bar is set at Maxima ..period par none, especially for Butt,& Mid Sections, i also prefer it for tippets at times too.
Another thing that i personally have done for 15+ years is use Amnesia in Red and Chartreuse for kind of a strike indicator in my butt sections.....These two: Maxima & Amnesia are the toughest materials i have found that are also relatively inexpensive.for tippets i use Maxima UltraGreen most, but i have also used Airflo Sightfree, P line, and Berkley Vanish. i keep coming back to Maxima still the best for this fishing IMHO.

For Trout: I use Maxima for my Butt & Mid Sections ...then i use several different kinds of tippet material depending on how i am fishing at that moment
I really like Orvis Super Strong, but i also like Climax, and Rio also. and still there are times i use Ultra Green Maxima without hesitation.
for Saltwater hands down ...Seaguar rules the roost especially flourocarbon.

LOL they dont! Gotcha ya boob

This season I have been testing Trout Hunter tippet in 5X and 6X for Shannon's and I am in love so far. I have no idea who they have manufacturing it, but it is awesome when tied to the Rio tapered leaders I typically use. Knots and breaking strength as well as stretch are everything I like in a good tippet material. I've been a Frog's Hair guy for many years now, but if this remains available, I may continue to use it instead.

Although the Tippet material I use is rather OLD In fact I dont think they even make it anymore (YAE YAE Some of you will say it's no good because of the age but thats not the case here -- It hasn't been exposed to extreme temp variations or sunlight) And it has yet to fail me even though its old.

Im using up the MAXIM tippet material I bought many years ago -- I love the stuff -- It not to stiff -- Its not to soft -- It's brown in color so as far as I konw the fish dont really see it.

I used to tie my own leaders out of an Orvis Leader Tieing kit and Orvis formulas -- I bought the Maxim Tippet material because it's dimensions in .001 of an inch and lb test to the X factor were Identical to the Orvis Material. I ran out of the Orvis Material in 4X 5X 6X 7X and 8X and needed to replace it without waiting on an order to be shipped. SO I bought a lot of the Maxim Material in those sizes. SOme of the best Tippet material I ever acquired and I may be wrong but I wish they still made it (Not Sure If they are still in Business)

Peace
Dan

I bought a spool of the 5x and :thumb:.

Trout hunter makes some good stuff.

Love the CDC and dubbing blends too!

Maxima for the win. I have from 7x to 0x for all types of fishing applications. I do like the rio tapered leaders though.

Maxima is great. they also use that stuff for guide wires on telephone poles and for whip finishing golf club heads:rofl:

I love it when fly shops have nothing to do in the off-season, except test gear! In 2012, one such fly shop tested tippet material.

Stroft GTM won the nylon category and Seaguar Grand Max won the flourocarbon category.

Interestingly, nylon beat flourocarbon for strength.

Most of the stuff out there looks strong. The real question is how fresh is it, how long has it been sitting on the store shelf exposed to light? And just as important, can you tie a decent knot?

Also, do those stupid little metal rings on some of them have any nicks....If they are not perfectly smooth your line will get jacked-up when you pull it through....I stopped using the rings after a bad experience..

I used Rio for about 15 years, just making the switch to Trouthunter. Brachy has me sold on it.

Maxima is great for Butt and mid-sections if you build leaders.(Dry-Flies)

Just read all the posts and no one has mentioned Drennen. For steelhead it's all I use.

Seems like a lot of steelheaders go with tippet brands with odd test ratings...e.g. Maxima chameleon 6lb test = Drennen 5lb test = trouthunter's 11lb test in diameter. This definitely caused me some confusion at first, when I heard people claiming to catch 8lb+ steelhead on 5lb tippet.

Is there a reason for going with these brands over the equivalent diameter of Rio/trouthunter/any other brand?

I usually use 6lb. I like Drennen because I find it to be limp and pliable in the cold weather, also I've never broke of a fish except for knot failure.:crap:

I've been using this silicone plated nylon material for the past several months and have been very pleased with it. Not only is it very good stuff, the frugal angler will like the 50m spools at the price of most other's 30m spools. Not too stiff, not too soft and excellent knot strength, low visibility, and high breaking strength. POWERFULL PREMIUM TIPPET MATERIAL 50mt. 5X

I used Puglisi's leader material back in the days before flurocarbon. One of the reasons for its high rated breaking strength was that it was larger in diameter than a comparable X size from other manufacturers like Orvis and Segaur. Drennan, Maxima and Airflo are others that come to mind as having exceptional breaking strength and being oversize. Is that still the case with the Puglisi leader material you are using??

It's an all new product, Andy
