Thomas & Thomas Fly Rods - Under New Ownership

It looks like Thomas & Thomas Rodmakers is in for the long haul. It's nice to see that the plant in MA will remain open and will be working on new rod lines for a long time. The latest rod is the NS 5. This is a fast action rod geared for guys fishing big rivers. I'm looking forward to testing the NS 5 on the river hopefully in a few weeks (if the weather stays the way it is).

From my understanding, all warranty's will still be honored and T&T is working hard to keep their company reputable.

Some of my old favorites include the LPS, the Paradigm, and of course the Vector series fly rods. The NS5 is a 4 piece 5wt rod and looks to be very promissing. Check out the T&T home page at, Thomas & Thomas . I'll post a full review of the NS 5 once I have a chance to cast it on a river. I can't wait!

April 05, 2011

Greenfield, MA - April 5, 2011. Chief Executive Officer of Thomas & Thomas Rodmakers Inc., Gerry Metcalfe, today announced the sale of all company assets.

The Thomas & Thomas brand, machinery, inventory and all other assets were sold to Islamorada, FL based fly fisherman Mark Richens. Concurrent to the asset purchase, Richens also agreed a deal to buy the Thomas & Thomas rod making facility in Greenfield, MA from Lon Deckard of Osprey, FL. The financial details of both transactions were undisclosed.
Metcalfe explained. The Thomas & Thomas brand is under new ownership. This brings to a conclusion the events of recent years that have troubled Thomas & Thomas Rodmakers. Despite my best efforts, issues arising from the withdrawal of bank funding following the financial crisis of 2007 and 2008 have proven insurmountable. The team at T&T produced fly rods of the highest quality throughout difficult circumstances and I wish to take this opportunity to thank them for their hard work and professionalism.

"Tom Dorsey is focused upon rod design full time now and he has upwards of a dozen new rods at prototype stage" and T&T will continue making bamboo, glass and graphite rods in Massachusetts under the Thomas & Thomas brand and will seek to recruit key personnel locally. Mark also advised me that he intends to honor warranty repairs on existing T&T rods. He will be issuing his own press release to this effect once he has had chance to discuss his plans with the many industry figures that have supported Thomas and Thomas so loyally over the years.

After putting so much into the company I am delighted to see Thomas & Thomas in the hands of someone with a full appreciation for its rich, forty-year heritage. I know Lon Deckard feels the same way.

Mark Richens is a fanatical fly fisherman, a long time user of T&T rods and a regular on the saltwater flats and trout and salmon streams of North America and beyond. At 39, he has the drive and acumen to re-energize this prestigious brand. He is unwavering in his belief that there remains a place for high quality fly rods, built entirely in the USA by craftsmen. I wish him and all involved with his new company well for the future."

I can't even afford to hold one of their rods in a store let alone purchase one.

After speaking with Trevor at the show and checking out their new website it looks like they mean business .. I did cast the NS 5 9' 4pc 5wt. This stick is awesome it has plenty of back bone to pick up huge amounts of line from the water and drive a long cast with accuracy as well as working in close with ease . The components fit and finish are hands down the best in the industry . Kudos to T&T hope to see them around for many years to come!

So who in NJ/NY carries Thomas and Thomas? TnT rods seem similar to Islander reels . . . . . . known as a quality product but never seem to be carried in the fly shops I visit.

You would be correct Paul .. I was down to see Harry a couple of weeks ago and he does carry T&T rods.

First things first. I apologize for the dated release. I know it's a year old but after speaking with the owner via email, I'm quite confident they have things under control. Here are a few quotes from yesterday's correspondance with Mark:

"Tom Dorsey is focused upon rod design full time now and he has upwards of a dozen new rods at prototype stage"

"We're excited that we should have plenty of new rods for the show in 2013."

Of course you don't have to take my word for it, If you call T&T and ask for a tour of the company, I think they'll accomodate you! Mark personally invited me to the company for a tour.

I agree with every statement you made about the rod. The rod is aesthetically beautiful and to add to what you've said, I'm sure that rod will cast much nicer on a stream than in a parking lot.

Seeing them at the Somerset show this year was a real pleasure. T&T was not at the show last year (when the press release came out) so seeing them at the show this year with a new line of rods just says that they're not fooling around.

I'll support T&T. I think they'll be around for a while!

I have two Thomas and Thomas Spey rods a 13 foot 7wt and a 12 foot 6wt. I bought the 13 foot 7wt before the company was reacquired. I had an issue with my 13 foot 7wt due to user error. They honored the older warranty and repaired it in under 3 weeks. Trevor is a stand up guy and will go out of his way to take care of his customer.
