The Sparrow

Good ole' Jack Gartside. He's been gone for a few years now, but one of my best memories at the Somerset show was stopping in front of Jack's spot when no one else was around. I said hello to him and how much I enjoyed his soft-hackle streamers. He was very nice and asked if there was anything I'd like to see him tye. I asked for the Sparrow. Jack said that he'd like to tye the Sparrow but didn't have a pheasant with him, so maybe I could go buy one somewhere and come back. I high-tailed it over to Mike Hogue's spot, bought the 1st pheasant I could get my hands on and zipped right back. Jack of course came through and gave quite the lesson in constructing his Sparrow.

It's hard to say why good patterns go unused for a whole season. I guess there are so many choices, and I like variety when I fish, so the Sparrow didn't make it onto my tippet last year. Your excellent tye is a reminder to fish this fly again. Thanks.

I was just reading your blog post about gartside's soft hackle streamer this morning and was planning to tie some up next time at the vice.. funny you post up another gartside pattern today (had never read about him before today) Excellent blog btw. And another beautiful fly

He was quite a tyer, and innovator. If you have a chance to pick up this book I strongly suggest you do.
"Fly Patterns for the Adventurous Tyer"

Does "Fly Patterns for the Adventurous Tyer" have tying instructions for the Sparrow?

Yes it does. You also get Jacks humor, and how the fly came to be called the Sparrow.
There's about 70 patterns in the book.

Jack's site has always been a favorite. A lot of good odd-ball humor there. If you go to the Happy Birthday Jack link, (Dec. 7th, so he and I share a b'day along with Tom Waits), then you'll be treated to a tribute demonstration of tying the Sparrow, but be warned that this has some of the worst camera focus that I've ever seen in a fly-tying video.

So how is that Gartside's Secret Stuff theartoflee?

Love the secret stuff especially the Peacock Blaze flavor. The first time I bought it I purchased the secret fly kit which included his book secret flys which gave me some ideas of patterns to tie. The last two seasons my most productive patterns for the Great Lakes incorporated the peacock blaze ss.
