Shannon's Fly
Shannon's Fly and Tackle of Califon, New Jersey will be holding our annual Traditional Angler Day Saturday May 4th at the Raritan Inn in Middle Valley, New Jersey from 10am until 2pm. Notables in attendance include John Shaner of Hardy North America, Pere Brandon, Marc Aroner, Dennis Menscer and more to name a few. It is a day full of cane and classic reels. We run it as a free to the public gathering. Bring your cane and swap some stories or head down to our private stretch to fish as long as you fly fish with the cane! We will keep the grill fired up. I Attended Shannon’s traditional angler day yesterday. It was a great time. After the event I fished the SBR north of Califon at one of the areas I like to fish. It was slow until the sun started going down. The fish became active. I was using a small caddis pattern I caught a few browns. I believe them to be wild hence the state does not stock them above Califon. One that I caught was about 8” but he jumped out of the water twice over my head. Just before dark around 7PM. I witnessed something that amazed me. I thought I would never see this on the South Branch again. (Back in the 80s it was not an uncommon event.) I witnessed a hatch of cream colored midges. They were small a size 38. There so many of them, had to be in the billions. It looked like it was snowing midges. I wish that I had a video camera because my description fails in comparison to the occurrence. The fish were on them but I had nothing remotely close to the size that they were. So I just sat there until dark and enjoyed it flipping my caddis which they stopped taking.
