Savae River Sunday

Fishing Guide
Fished the Savage River in Maryland a week ago. The fishing was good for the few hours that we were there. Its a small tailwater with lots of wild brown and brook trout. The trout there can be very difficult to catch but not on this outing. The fishing there was higher quality than on the North Branch of the Potomac. The trout were caught on rubber legged stoneflies and biot nymphs.

Hit the HD button as it was shot using an HD camera.

Enjoy

AJ,

Those are some colored up brownies. Nice!

How many hours did it take you to drive there?

Beautiful stream. I love fishing bolders.

Thanks for the report,
Cdog

That river is about 5 hours away. I have fished it a few times. Once the water was dirty, it was very hard to put together a catch of fish. One other time it was really easy because of a hatch. This time was a lot of fun because it wasn't too easy but it was not brain surgery either.

That whole stream is pocket water with huge boulders... you will fall in! There are around 1,200-1,600 fish per mile and some days you would think that there are three! If you like pocket water, then that stream is paradise. I would highly recommend it to anyone who would like to make a weekend trip out of it.

Nice video and great looking fish. I have to ask, were you using some pretty high strength tippet or am I just under utilizing my tippet, because it seemed like you could really man handle those trout. Not criticizing just curious.

You read my mind. Any fly shops down there that you remember the name and town? Looking to get more information.

Thanks,

Cdog,

www.savageriveroutfitters.com is the fly shops address. The place to stay there is Lavale, there are a bunch of hotels there. That stream is practically in the middle of nowhere!

Burt,

No offense taken. I use an 11 foot three weight for most of my fishing. In that stream I use 5 and sometimes 6x flouroflex plus. The rod and the powerful tippet allow me to mad fish quickly and get them back in the water faster. This helps to make sure that I am not playing them too long and harming the fish.

Re the comment about visiting the Savage River in Maryland and the water was dirty, I would say that it must have been when work was being don on the Dam. As a tailwater, it is very rare that the river is not clear...I live on it and fish it nearly every day running my fly shop, guide service and cabins on the river.

I still cant get over the net in the video too funny. I think you need a longer rod to match the net. :)

Hey you might not need a net that big 90 percent of the time. However, the few times that I do need it I am glad that its back there!

Very few trout can elude that huge opening!

Excellent point, it comes in handy when needed. This makes me sound like a 5 year old but any tips on grasping fish to release? I was landing brookies today but they were hopping all over the place and I didn't want to squeeze their bodies too hard. Anything you use besides trying to hold them upside down?
