Saratoga springs area

Catskill Mountain Man

Explore, and implore to explore
Im going up to saratoga springs on friday night for a concert and I would like to fish a bit on my way home saturday morning. I see geyser creek looks awesome with the only tufas east of the mississippi, but im gonna need more advice. It cant be too far away, but an awesome day of fishing after seeing my favorite band the day before would really cap my summer off right. So please a nice (i dont wanna say secret) spot that someone may know would get my gears back rollin' to start my fall off right (with fish). i dont mind small streams or big ones, but mind you ill be working with a 8'6 5 wt

tight lines
cmm

p.s. a place with tons of brookies would be even better

Why don't you try the NY section of the Battenkill? If you're going to be in Saratoga it shouldn't be too far away... I would recomend you go to the Esopus or maybe black creek off of 9W in West Park, but the Catskills were hit so damn hard, especially the Esopus and Schoarie.

The local Saratoga stream is the Kayaderosseras Ck. Not sure how it fishes after the summer.

Just east of the Hudson are the Hoosic/Little Hoosic, Roeliff Jansen Kill and some other streams not on most people's traveling plans. Something different to consider. Battenkill is not far either.

NYS DEC site has descriptions and PFR maps for more info.

The big question is how these streams are faring after Irene. Fish are likely there, but some of the roads/bridges getting to them were clobbered. Northern Catskills and Southern Vermont were some of the hardest hit areas.

Haven't fished there. I've been fishing the Kady quite a bit this summer. Up until the storms, there were a good number of small browns on the stretch between the municipal pool and kelly park in B-Spa. Since then, I've had to go either upstream of the bridge there or downstream (below the no-swimming sign) to find trout. The stream is nice there in town. Room to cast and the wading is easy.

I think the Battenkill is way above fishable and will be for quite a while yet.

I'm planning on heading up to the Mettawee tomorrow.

Hoosic gage is still a bit high and getting more rain today so i wouldnt count on rensselaer county this wknd. but you never know.

i would think west of saratoga is your best bet. if you can get up into the hills, ive heard there are brookies.

I used to fish the Kaydeross regularly when I lived in Ballston Spa, I generally had reasonable success throughout the year. I always preferred to head west of Saratoga and Ballston Spa to Greenfield and fish the upper stretches. Check the DEC maps, there are numerous access points throughout the whole stream. I have no idea how recent rainfall has affected the stream though.

i fished the Schroon up there 2 years ago and had quite a nice 2 days on the river. clobbered them on standard elk hair caddis dries. fished the riffles and the fast water and was very surprised at the amount of eager fish between exits 24 and 26 on route 87. exit and follow schroon river road along the river for a couple miles of fishing.

2hrs away is the Salmon River and you could really cap your summer off with a 30lb salmon or 12lb steelie. that's my suggestion.

Got nothin' on Mettawee this a.m. near Comstock. Water is still pretty high and grey. Hit Kady on the way back at Rock City in a couple spots--zilch there either.
