Interesting Day on the D.

I floated the D on Saturday with one of my dogs. I put in at a secluded location where 12 or so canoe's hit the water at the same time I did. They moved on pretty quick so no big deal. I started fishing a riffle with a dry and hooked into many fish. Every time I got the fish near the boat, they'd fall off. After the 4th or 5th one, I figured it was time to check my fly. Turns out the bend of my hook wasn't quit bent. It looked like a 1/4 moon. I changed the fly and caught a bunch of nice 12" browns and a few bows the same size. After a a few hours I figured it was time to move on.

2:30 or so rolls around and I anchor down and start watching the water. Fish were everywhere. Sitting down, I cast my fly over some working fish and hook into a nice bow. This 19" fish jumped out of the water 4-5 times before coming to my net. Then another and another then it started to rain and pour:

Then it stopped and I caught more fish, then it rained even harder. That was on and off for a good hour but the fish never stopped working the top.

So here's where the fishing got interesting. An older guy (probably 75/80yrs old) walks up the bank and gets in the water 20 yards from me. I had no problem, there were plenty of fish. Then a boat anchors upstream from me, a good 50 - 60 yards away. Plenty of room. Then another boat comes down stream with two people in it and appears to pull up next to the boat but I pay little attention and continue fishing. Then I see the guy point to fish toward the bank and he says something like, "I'm going to fish for heads over there". I thought he was friends with the people on the boat that he was parked next to. I continue to cast, both boats were far enough away from me that neither was intruding. A minute later the guy pulls his anchor up and floats right through the pool I was fishing. He was probably 50 feet from me. So I look at the guy and said, "First time rowing a boat huh". The guy says, "no". So I ask him, "well who taught you how to row?" and he says, "I did". I said, "That explains everything, ever hear of common river courtesy, How about a little etiquette. Now the guy is clearly getting pissed. So now, slightly down stream the guy starts rowing backwards. I say, "I've never seen anything like this, are you seriously going to fish right in front of me?" At this point the guy is now on the right side of my boat mumbling something. I couldn't figure out what he was doing but All I can think was that he was going to row behind me and fish upstream and behind me. Then I turned around and the old guy is still standing there. Then the guy drops his anchor 10 feet from me and says, "Do you have a gun, because that's the only way I'm not boarding your boat". At this point I'm puzzled beyond belief. See... this guy actually used his energy to pull up along side of me to threaten me! Then get this... He says, "Nobody disrespects me". I'm looking at this asshole with a look of complete disbelief. Then he says, "I'm boarding your boat so you better apologize for disrespecting me." Then he says, "I said I was sorry twice". I didn't hear him say sorry at all. Now as he's talking, I'm looking at him and he pulls the "don't be eyeballing me, you better stop looking at me." As I'm looking at him I said, "you're looking at me, I'm looking at you, so what.". A few seconds later the guy pulls his anchor up 1/2 way and says, "We're going to run into each other again, watch out". I never heard the guy say he was sorry but I would have gracefully accepted the apology had I heard him and enjoyed the rest of my day. I get it... shit happens and some of these guys with boats don't know what the fuck they're doing.

Now the guy is downstream a ways and the guys in the boat above me shouts over and says, "That guy was unbelievable, he crashed into us and says he's going to fish while he's attached to us".

The boat didn't have numbers and he wasn't a guide. It didn't matter... how do you crash into someone then run right through a pool someone else is clearly fishing and while doing so, threaten to kick someones ass for disrespecting you for calling you an asshole. Incredible! The old guy behind me never said a word. Good thing, I'm sure the asshole would have beat him down too.

After all of this, I floated downstream and continued to catch more fish. It was a helluva day!

Watch for douche bags on the river. I don't care how big and tough you look... If you're an asshole, I'm going to have to tell you one way or another that you're an asshole.

Now I gotta carry a gun in my boat just in case someone asks. I can take it out and say, "Yeah, get any closer and I'm going to have to put a cap in your grill".

The guys friend never said a word. I don't know if he was shocked or embarrassed or both or just figures he'd mind his own business.

Was that you at the cemetery pool ? I floated down to the riff below knights (forget the name of it) and was all alone for 2 hours having the same fun you were having. Next thing I know I am surrounded by 3 boats all in casting distance. Said fuck it, caught enough fish and rowed in. Plus it started pouring again. Definitely more boats then in past years but there were also just as many idiots on the water 20 years ago. Some people are just clueless

Courtsey in many areas of life have gone out the window. I will take the cover of my boat today and get it ready. Call me and we will float in pairs and i will be the muscle you need to keep from getting assaulted on the river. :guns:

Good morning.

A friend writes:

Yesterday at Pine Flats something very unusual and unnerving happened.

We were anchored at various tailouts and after a time, two guys with a jonboat came out to our boat and demanded that I show them what flies we were using.

They had observed us doing very well from the shore with the rainbows for over an hour with these GQ flash pupas.

{Photo below}

I mean...very well. The water temperature was ideal for rainbows on the UDR - 60 degrees.

I told them that had no business wanting to know what flies we were having success with.

I mean, this wasn't Somalia...or the Ivory Coast -- this is the beautiful Upper Delaware River where eagles soar and you and I can have an ice cold Yeungling while we get a buzz watching subtle riseforms.

Anyway. Both were big lugs from the valley and told me that they had had enough with my spot burning of Pine Flats on my blog and if I didn't move on there would be hell to pay.

It was very unsettling.

I think I might need Boyar's assistance with a restraint order or something but I will forward this note to my friends at Conde Nast for mention in GQ.

Tight lines always.

Man, your some kind of magnet for trouble. First the line of fire from the trees, and now this. Always finding yourself in some kind of situation. You're like the George Costanza fo the Delaware (wait, maybe that's the Beetle....). I think you need to get a Rotteiler or Dobermann to keep that red retriever company, if your gonna keep dissing people and getting into shit with them.

Everybody told CDUN to get a drift boat... ;)

We're all seeing more and more of 'em.
Of course it was gonna get to be "bumper boats" in short order.
River rage to follow.

Fly fishing... the gentlemens' sport.

That guy is crazy, like for real crazy..Surprised he didn't try and board your boat or show you a 9mm.

That dude was definitely unstable. He probably works for the US postal service. Too bad you had to deal with that. DC you showed that you were the classier individual. Good thing he did not go postal.

The guy was confused.

Last week, a crazy guy boarded Cabarle's boat.

So naturally this dude thought he was welcome aboard.

I learned long ago as a bouncer in college that the ones that verbally threaten you never act on their threats. The only ones that you have to worry about are those that simply jump you (or in your boat). The rest is just bluster and they will always move on after they realize you are not intimidated.

But the # of boats showing up is incredible the last few years and I mean private boats more than new guides. I was guilty of that myself the other week when we had 3 drift boats in from NC (2) and NH (1). But ours were all owned by guides that know river etiquette and had at least one locally knowledgeable person in each boat that knew the river well and the local ways things are done on the upper D.

Yep, I was anchored up there for a while. I have no issue with rain like that. It makes the best fishing.

Yes, but the big-mouthed tough-guys who back down and loose face are also the ones that sometimes come back with a gun or knife to settle the score. Never assume anything, and always be aware of your surroundings.

I think DC's life was not in real danger :)

Dennis - did you at least tell the guy your dog's nickname is Nut Ripper?:crap::):)

I think DC has a toxic personality. First he accused a fishing celebrity of hijacking his boat, then he banned and threathened a kindly elderly gentelman that was a frequent poster on this board, and now he diss's a fellow fisherman and threatens to break out his 9 and bust a cap.

Im sure he wasn't in any real danger, and your not 99.5% of the time. Then again, the graveyard is full of people that didn't see trouble coming.

You mean you don't have a gun with you at all times on the water?

I haven't experienced stuff like this here in AK. Mostly because we all DO have guns and an armed society is a polite society.

For a nominal fee (small coffee) I will be glad to provide private security services on the Delaware. I will be wearing all the latest coolest gear and cammo and carrying only the most appropriate firearms. If people low hole you or run through the hole you're fishing, I will just shoot holes in their boat.
