Here is a picture of a salter from the Quashnet, taken last Wednesday, on a Rainy's bb screamer. Also a pic of a conehead llama intended for these salters. I found them willing to take a Thunder Creek streamer, also. Bigger fish active right now, although they were all a bit hesitant in their takes. If you don't see the take, you will miss about 80% of them, in my experience on this particular day. They were taking at the end of the swing, and moving upstream with the fly. I did move several large fish, just below Martin Road. I highly recommend the Quashnet to anyone fishing the cape for salters. It's about 15 minutes from Red Brook, over the canal, down rt 28, over on 151, back to 28, and then off Martin Road.

We fished this Salter stream on Cape Cod on saturday, 2/13

Lots of snow there with some of the trout cooperating.

There was an out going tide, and they hit various streamers.

I purchased my license at Red Top Sporting Goods in Buzzards Bay, the gent who assisted me in the request was quite helpful, its a nice shop and if you have the chance stop in, they love to talk fishing.

Hey B.T.,
A.T. here from Fly Addict.
Nice to see you've been fishing.
Went to hear the wild trout talk by Mike H. from the DEP.
Very good.
I'm headed out tomorrow for sea runs down my way.
Should be fun.
A.T.

AT,

Glad you were able to hear Mikes talk, he has a lot of info.

I'll be waiting your report on your outing.

Ever catch anything real big down there ? My local shop owner claims his friend caught a 20" + salter there last year, upstram of the road. I'm heading to Quashnet, closer to open water, below 28, this spring, looking for bigger fish.

I've never taken anything close to 20", but have hooked a few heavys in the stream where it meets the bay.

I would believe there are 20" fish there.

BRK TRT - I see in picture # 5 some in-stream habitat work. Is that more of the work that TU and others were doing in another thread (or perhaps earlier in this thread)? They've built a nice riffle into that pool. Good looking water!

Yes thats TU's work.

They changed the flow of the stream in that area to allow the stream to rid itself of the sand.

That's what it looks like. They built that shear which looks like a riffle to redirect the flow into the deep pool which will continually scour it and keep sediment - which up there is sand - out of the pool and moving downstream. We're doing some of that same work in the Musky but on a large scale. Love your pix and posts as always.

Caught this beauty in Quashnet yesterday, changed my technique to dead drifting heavy streamers, caught numerous larger fish.

That is a tremendous fish for the Quashnet, from what I'm told of it. I'd be pleased for a private message of suggestion. I live not far from it, but would not have thought of fishing it until a little farther into the early spring. Think of it: wild trout, on Cape Cod, in February. It's the sort of surprise that makes fly fishing a beautiful thing.

Yes, I was thinking how blessed we are to have fish like that in such an accessible spot. Do you fish Scorton ? I'd be glad to share some info, if you had some to offer on that fishery, that would be a plus for me. Either way, check your pm.

I just returned from a few days fishing the Cape. I fished two streams that hold sea run brookies. The streams were full of river herring on their spawning run.
The streams were in good shape with water temps of 58 to 60 degrees.
I was able to hook many brookies in both streams, although they were small. Its good to see that they are increasing in numbers and that the restorations are working. The brookies were taken on small streamers.

blah! the pizza anywhere else besides the Ny metropolitan area (ny nj) SUCKS!!!!. I've had pizza in probably 18 states already. and if you have had pizza anywhere else you should know the question "How the hell do you mess up pizza?" pretty well.

I must agree, pizza outside of about a 60 mile radius of NyC should be called something else, If you don't have one already treat yourself to a "pizza stone" and start making it yourself.....

It does state the best pizza on the Cape, and thats what it is.

I appreciate the picture of the pizza. Every time I drive by there, I wonder how it is. Looks ok, but the crust looks like they use frozen dough ? Any way, pizza is not the specialty on the cape. Anyone wants to meet me on the cape with NYC pizza, feel free to let me know. Good to hear the herring are in the rivers, I'm guessing I know what the other stream was, how was the fishing there in particular ? I'll be looking for sea run Browns again soon.

There is a law on the books (you should know) that keeps pizza technology and recipes within a strict 60 mile border around NYC. Although there is one loophole with that does allow pizza secret keepers to escape the zone and relocate to other areas.

My question to you sir, is this: How many out of state pizzas did it take for you to conclude that they suck? AND why do you keep on eating them? :)

Both streams fished very well. The fish were small but plentiful.

The stream with the new foot bridge usually gives up some bigger fish, I believe they were further upstream.

I'll respectfully suggest a trip to New Haven,Ct (Modern Pizza among others)

I've gotta tell yah, "Little Italy" pizza in Hancock, NY is pretty damned good for a place that falls outside of the 60mile zone. Pizza is not the only good thing on the menu.

I'm with 20 miles of NYC and Little Italy beats anything in my town.

I suspect the loophole has been used in this case. An escapee has set up shop. Next time you're in "Little Italy" pizza, ask the owner to say these words: "forget about it". ;)

For all of you who head up 17/86 for fishing, the 60 mile border is somewhere between Wurtsboro and Rock Hill. Plan accordingly.
