Salmon River Report 2009

Just as an FYI, thanks to the attitude displayed on this thread, I'll no longer post any hints, recipes, or procedures for curing salmon roe. You know who to thank.

Additionally, you elitist snobs are stupid for using bows for deer, I can shoot so many more using my rifle and a salt block.

Also, people have reported trout in the lower, mid, and upper river.
CT, boy your a real genius your thanking a guy who was clearly taking a shot at you. AS for the paint chips I always liked the blue ones put on alot of weight as a kid from eating all that lead.:puking-smiley:

Not to take way from the whole "whose rod is better" pissing match but I thought you guys might find this interesting, I did. I got this from a PHW email update I received. I was unaware there was a Project healing Waters on the Salmon. These events are growing in popularity across the country and many are usually looking for volunteers to help out with just about anything in order to put a successful event for our veterans:

In mid-September, Project Healing Waters accompanied 15 soldiers and veterans to the Salmon River in upstate New York where they enjoyed a beautiful weekend casting and fighting fish. Thanks to the Salmon River Fish Hatchery for the use of their private access on the Salmon, this marks the second trip for soldiers and veterans.

Jessica Trump, of Oswego County Tourism, describes the event wonderfully in her blog and includes a link to an official news release from Oswego County Tourism.

You're the genious. Do you really think I meant that as a thank you. I was being sarcastic. I know, hard to see it through the computer. Not only that, but you're such a square you couldn't figure it out anyways.

Just returned from two totally crappy days on SR. Also tried S & N Sandy. Didn't see one steelhead landed in two days - fished Ballfield, Compactor, below the Trestle, Ellis Cove, Maples, Altmar Pool, and upper fly zone. A couple of guide boats said they had caught chrome but could of fooled me and about 100 other guys. Only saw zebras in the river. Totally wasted my time and $$.<!-- google_ad_section_end --> Did hear there are many fresh fish in the estuary but don't know the validity of this report as it might be BS to entice more trips.

Sorry you had a bad outing......we've all had our trips like that.

I did go up yesterday(10-23) and had decent fishing and good company. It was tough trying to figure out where to hit with the water dropping a good amount for a few days in a row. I didn't think the fish would be biting due to this, but was wrong. I brought a friend of mine who has been skunked the past 2 outings, so I decided to hit the DSR with hopes to getting into some fresh steel in some good runs at 335.

We each ooked up with 2 kings and 4 steel. He finally landed his first chromer and I went 4 for 4.

Beautiful fish - you surely did well. We probably should of tried DSR but just didn't want to spend the entry fee.

See my reel was round in this picture, my line was bright, and I was running an egg pattern. Isn't this fly fishing? Oh wait, a centerpin was aorund before fly fishing.

New guy here. Not trying to start a fight but could you explain what you mean by centerpinning being around before flyfishing?
There are references to catching fish on flies dating back to the Roman empire and many books dating back to at least the 16th century.
When was the first writing on centerpinning that you can reference?
Not a put down of the CP or any other method of legal fishing since I fish with whatever rod I have in my hand.

I was hoping the dialogue between WBranch and I would get this thread back on topic.....so let's try to keep it to what it is - the joys and frustrations of fishing the Salmon river and not with each other!!! We get it already, Trico and Chris will never figure out who can pee furthest in the snow.

WBranch, I'm not one to want to spend the entrance fee either and would not had I brought different company (I really needed him to hook up) or if the water was any higher, even at 450. This time it was worth the $60 I spent, other times it has not been worth my time down there. It's always a crap shoot.

Nice job LyNcH! Leave some fish for Pete!!!
BTW, I LIKE that jacket....

9 days and counting!!

I am loving the jacket, it is well worth $120 spent at Cabelas.com in their bargain cave. They have free shipping right now on orders over $150. Let me know if you place an order, I could use a few leaders before our trip.

hit the UFZ this morning, not too crowded at all. finally. took a few small browns and atlantics (all 10-16") and a couple decent hookups between the 3 of us. moved to trooper for the afternoon and the fish got smaller and fewer. not stellar by any means but it was good to finally get into some fish at least.

Fished this weekend with the ESF Troutbum Flyfishing Club. They fished the UFZ the first day and all did well. Mix bag of sharks, browns and chrome. All of them were running egg patterns. It was the easiest fly to tie in bulk I guess. Anyways, the first day I took one of the Presidents of the club and a member out on the boat. The president and I were swinging the whole day. We both had a few takes, but the best part was actually getting something to stay on! Hit a nice male brown swinging an olive drab wooly bugger down near pineville. Anyways, more chrome is moving into the upper river, and there is plenty down low. Still need more water. Hopefully 3000 CFS.

The center pin reel was one of the very first winding mechanisms made for fishing. Where do think the fly reel came from?

Just got home from fishing the salmon river this weekend. The drive up there in the rain was miserable, took almost 6 hours. The weather saturday was pretty foul too, heavy rain at times, overcast, very windy making it hard to fish. I fished the lower dsr near the meadow all morning which was a mistake, it was absolutely dead; went upstream above the stairs by the parking lot around 4 and there were definitely fish there, just hard to get at. I hooked up on 2 and they both threw the hook in their mid-air acrobatics, I wasn't too happy about that as exciting as it was. Sunday was a much better day, I found a decent run that my friend and I had all to ourselves that was holding fish all day. The final total was 6 steelhead 2 browns and a king between the two of us. Caught them all on red/yellow eggs and some flashy nimph patterns. I'm hoping to get one more trip up in two weeks.

Oh wow...the president...you must be pretty important to get to fish with him.

Oh wait, a centerpin was aorund before fly fishing.

The quote doesn't say anything about winding devices. It says a centerpin was around before fly fishing.
I hope you can see why I asked the question.
Fly fishing was going on long before centerpinning.
It would take a master pinner to get a 100 foot drift with braided a horse tail line.

Now back on track with the thread. My bad for commenting on one of the posts in it.

Our latest notables...CT whats that funny looking rod you've got with that brown?

Odd. None of you sh_t talkers have anything to say after I hit a brown on the swing. Must be you suck that much and can only catch fish on erie tribs. TRICO MIKE.

Good for you that you caught it on the swing. Don't understand why you have to talk trash about a fishery you really know little or nothing about. Buy the way I usually catch most of my fish on the swing wether it be on the SR or the erie tribs.
