Salmon River Report 2009

CTobias

Professional BS'r
Well, it is closely approaching the 2009 Salmon Run. Ok, so it may be a little ways off. Anyone going to be attending Spey Nation on the 20th of June at the Pineville parking lot?

Also, I will be reporting on the summer steelhead fishing on the SR. I am not sure how much I will be getting out to do some fishing up there, but I will be giving it my best shot to see if I can land one of these so called Skamania strain steelhead.

bout time this thread got kicked off. can't wait to see those skammies. doubt i'll have time to fish for them myself this summer, but i'll be watching. personally, i'm dreaming of november mornings most nights. brrrrrrr.

woohoo, less than 3 weeks!

Hit the upper fly zone today and HAMMERED them. Haha, so maybe they were just small bows and a butt load of atlantics, but it was still fun with my four weight. Everything was on dries. Biggest was about a 12" atlantic. Still waiting for some Skamanies to come in.

I'll be there. I'll be the one in the woods throwing rocks.

Ditto what Ed said.

CT good to see you haven't allowed that river to rest...

As long as I am still in NY I can not allow that river to rest. Haha. My goal is to sore lip as many fish on that river system as I can. Even if it is a creek chub or bass.

Fished the SR today up in Altmar. No skammanies yet. They dropped the water on me! It was up a little over 500 this weekend and then they dropped it back down to 185!!!! Lots of small rainbows (smolts) eating everything they can. Also plenty of salmon river tarpon to be caught. If I get out of work early enough tomorrow, I am heading up there with my buddy to float the top half. Might even go mid river to hit some of the deeper holes. Hopefully something is out there that is bigger than a smolt.

I was there last week, checked out the Black Hole for smallies and anything else. More to satisfy my curiosity than anything else. Found a big dead lamprey and made sure that was dead.

We went to the upper fly zone and the water was churning with smolts raping the river for food. They were fun, but man they were hitting anything. At one point, I had a elk-hair caddis drifting behind me in the water while I looked through my flybox for something bigger and felt a tug on my line and a smolt had taken the fly. My friend caught a bass and a smaller rainbow.

The only problem was the damn mosquitos. It was pretty thick.

Didn't snag anything big Cdog. Just a bunch of steel and atlantic smolt. I did see one dead Atlantic that was about 26" long up in Frasier's Run on the bank. Hopefully they release some water this Fourth of July weekend, and help bring some fish in.

I wonder where those Scammies are hiding?

Sad about the Atlantic. There's so few as it is.

They are educated up there on the Salmon River CP-Dog.

They see that new Hyde drift boat coming and the cheese it...

They can run.. but they can't hide from that Hyde...

We are expecting a lot of rain this week, and the temps have cooled off a bit. Should help push a few in!!! If there is rain in the forecast tomorrow I am heading up there to tromp around the river and see what I can catch. Hopefully some SUMMER CHROME!!!!

Don't worry, for those of you who are stuck at home with 4th of July parties, I will be sure to post a report on the fishing. YAYAYAYAYAYAYAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY WATER FOR ME TO FLOAT IN!!!

Well...the water was up...but no luck with the summer runs yet. What can you do?!?!?! Hopefully some day before the fall I can wrangle on of these unicorns and get some photos for all of you out there in internet fishing land.

I knew it!! You were always a snagger. :) It's ok. Just make sure you start working out a little more so you can handle catching more fish this
winter!!!

by the way...classic new avatar...

Spent saturday morning in the UFZ from wire-to-wire. No big fish and it's still loaded with smolts and fingerlings. We spent most of the morning catching the recently stocked browns (8-12"). There were some (not much) bigger browns in the pools. The largest I caught was about 14" and that was on a elk hair caddis I was stripping back in from a drift.

We stopped at the hatchery and there were 15-25 fish in the ladder, maybe more, including one fat bastard (seriously ~20 lbs). My identification skills aren't good enough to make accurate IDs on fish in dark water from above, so I don't know what they were.
