Salmon River Report 2009

Upper fly zone should start seeing more fish after this weekend. My buddy and I saw a HUGE chromer in the LFZ. It was an easy ten pound fish. Fresh as well. Good luck this weekend. Heading out shortly to give some rowing lessons, then going to fish hard all day tomorrow.

Was up on the river today showing a buddy how to row a drift boat. Stopped in the first pool at the LFZ just up from the bridge. At least 50 or so chromers sitting in there. After this water release, there should be a decent amount of fish in the river. I imagine if that many are sitting in the LFZ that there is a good number in the UFZ. They were sitting right on the seam in the fast water. SO, like I said earlier, fish the deeper faster water if you are out there hunting for the summer chrome.

Another water release going on next weekend.

Until 9:00 PM Thu JUL 30, 185 CFS
From 9:00 PM Thu, until 9:00 PM, Fri JUL 31, 400 CFS
From 9:00 PM, Fri JUL 31, until 9:00 PM, Sun AUG 02, 750 CFS
From 9:00 PM, Sun AUG 02, until 9:00 AM, Mon AUG 03, 400 CFS
From 9:00 AM, Mon AUG 03, until 9:00 PM, Fri AUG 07, 185 CFS

Still no skams. Saw one today when I floated Altmar to Pineville. Starting to see a good amount in the Church Pool. Still a bunch down in the first pool above the the Altmar Bridge in the LFZ. Everything we have seen on the river has been in the fast water. That's where it will be coolest and have the most oxygen. Have been hitting a bunch of the stocker browns, and the other day I pulled out about a 14" true domestic rainbow below the island hole. Saw about three dead lake run browns (biggest was about 10lbs). They must have come in with the last water release and not faired so well when the water heated up.

Not going to be able to fish next weekend, some horrible person is making me get drunk and eat bbq and sea food all weekend. I will try and make it up after work during the week.

I wanted to try and start a clean post about SR but couldn't find the 'Post' button...

Anyway, I was thinking about heading up to the SR in a couple weeks...like before Aug 15.

Would anyone dissuade me from doing so? Is it a waste of time? I'd be happy with a brown or two...although an atlantic or skam would be pretty awesome.

thoughts?

There's no way to know for sure. I hit a big run of kings a few years back around that time, but haven't since. Sure there are a few scammies and brownies in the river right now, but your odds of getting one are slim. Fishing improves early in September and just keeps getting better through October for salmon and through April for steelhead and browns. Unless you know the river well, I'd hold off a few weeks. You need to keep an eye on water releases. It play a big part on the numbers coming into the river.

Don't listen to Corn Dog, he has to have a sufficient number of fish around so he can snag them. True Story.

I'd say give it a shot. With the numbers of skams I have seen in the LFZ over the past week, I'd say there should be a decent number by the time you are coming up. Just make sure you fish at the ass crack of dawn. You want to be out there as early as possible to have the best shot. Then come back and fish the evening as well. There is a water release this next weekend, and that will help push more of the fish into the UFZ. Remember, the fish fill in from the top of the river down. Your best bet to hook a summer run steelie will be from the schoolhouse to Altmar, or the UFZ. If it's a rainy cloud covered day, you will have a better chance to hook one since you will be able to fish all day.

There are plenty of browns to play with as well. Best bet is to fish the deeper faster runs. They don't have to be real deep, just deep enough to make the fish feel safe. I have seen the majority of the skams sitting in the faster water and at the tail outs of deeper runs right before it dumps into the fast water. I'd say go out and give it hell. But, I am also 30 minutes from the river, so I am a little spoiled.

Just as I thought...SNAGGER!

I tell everyone I haven't caught anything, because I want them all to myself!!!

Now we have it.

The chair force was never really good for much. Too bad now they have more unmaned drones than they do jets in the air force. Just shows you how lazy they really are.

If you want to get away from the city and enjoy being outdoors, then by all means head on up. You will catch fish (it may only be an 8 inch smolt). The browns in the UFZ range from the stocked 10"-14" with the unlikely possibility of a lake run brown (which are in the Oswego River right now, too), plus the remote possibility of hooking a skamania, which would instantly make the whole trip worth it. I was there two weekends ago and I'll probably head up Saturday AM for UFZ action. I'll fish the big gun early and then once I've been skunked, I'll break out the 5 wt for stocked browns and smolt.

I'm only 45 minutes away from the river, so it's easier for me to pop up for 4-6 hours in the morning or evening. I drove to Lake Placid last weekend and spend most of the weekend wondering why I didn't just go to the Salmon River.

All in all, during the summer, the SR is scenic, mostly empty of people (it's a downright ghost town compared to mid-October), with a chance for trophy fish.

You know what is really difficult for me to get use to is seeing the sun.

Seeing green grass, leaves on the trees.

The view from Pineville, this is what I am use to.

I'm with you on this one AK the only time I see sun up there is early Sept. and with in a week or two the rain starts and never seems to go away and the leaves disappear never to be seen again along with the sun till spring.

oh come on...it gets sunny...see...? sun had melted off that frost by...umm...'bout 1:30 pm...

I think that the idea of a relatively empty SR is enough for me to take a ride up there.

Thanks for the advice!

CT -- will do with the pictures.

BTW, I think it's hilarious that this SR Report has 8 pages!!

It's like we wait all winter for spring to arrive and as soon as it gets hot -- all we can do is dream about standing in freezing cold water watching ice form on our guides.

Anyone else see the irony in this?
