Salmon River Report 2007

Douglaston Salmon Run Report for 11/14/07

A decent day with approximately 3 dozen steelhead landed. The water level is at 500 cfs. Water temperature was 40.

Whitaker's Fly Shop Report

Wednesday was a mix of sun and clouds with temperatures in the mid 50's along with scattered showers late in the day. Were still getting mixed reports from anglers like Corn Dog himself depending on where they fished, but overall most groups are getting into fish. The lower end of the river is getting the least amount of pressure and each day fresh chrome along with the occasional brown trout have been landed.

wpeter77,

To add to what AKSkim explained about centerpinning...

If you've nymph and indicator fished then you know the technique. The advantage centerpinning has over fly fishing is that you can dead drift bait, a nymph, a jig, etc. under a float (indicator) for longer distances than with a conventional fly rod. I've seen guys with good eyes drift 50 yards. The centerpin reel is on a center spindle (axis) that rotates freely (no drag) in both directions. After the cast, the float pulls the line off the reel as it rotates in the reverse direction while the float is drifting downstream. The angler applies light pressure to the spinning spool to control the speed of the line coming off. This is done to control the loose line in the water. Many pinners keep their line from the tip of their long (10'-15') rods to the float completely out of the water.

It's a deadly fishing technique if you're in the numbers game.

There it is in a nut shell. You were too busy watching what everyone else was doing and not paying attention to your own business.

Let that be a lesson for you.

As always, have just one suggestion, maybe a bazooka toting chipmunk might help next time.

LOL!

Well...when you're not catching anything, you look around to make sure noone else is either.

By the way, thanks for the DSR report. Rub it in, rub it in.

Reminder;

The LOWER FLY ZONE is now open for business.... this weekend will be crowded for sure.

I'll be up this weekend. Trying to decide if I want to brave the crowds at the LFZ, or hit the lower river for some solidtude. Saw a several reports that there are a lot of fish at the LFZ and a lot of people catching.

Whitaker's Fly Shop Report

On Saturday we had a mix of sun and clouds along with temperatures in the upper 30's. The fishing pressure did increase for the weekend and were still getting mixed reports from anglers depending on where they fished, but overall most groups are getting into fish. The lower end of the river is getting the least amount of pressure and each day fresh chrome along with the occasional brown trout have been landed. Some days are better then others, but moving around and covering lots of water has been the key to success in the lower end. The upper end of the river between Altmar and Pineville has produced steelhead action on a daily basis, but is also getting the most pressure.

Got back from Pulaski last night. Hit the lower river Sat. am no fish and quite a few people. Talked to one fellow said he and his buddy both got into one using egg sacks on a pin. Moved up to the Pineville area and found a nice little pool, went 1 for 2 both around 10 pds. Both took a bead head hares ear. Hit the same general area Sun. am and lost 2, one on a hares ear the other on a jail bird nymph. Had a nice weekend and for me, getting into 4 fish was pretty good. :)

Got back from Pulaski last night. :)

FM23,

You left just in time. Today with the drop in barometric pressure, the Steelhead developed a severe case of lock jaw.

Interesting use in fly patterns, I have heard many use BHHE before, but I was always reluctant to try them.

Weekend crowds have thinned out dramatically over night. Mid afternoon I took a drive around;
Sportsman Pool, one fisherman who was leaving. Nothing ALL DAY, not even a bent rod in sight.
South Trestle 4 cars
LFZ 6 fishermen within sight.
Altmar 6 fisherman within sight.
School House Pool & Wire Hole a fair number of fisherman in attendance.
Spoke with a couple leaving the Wire Hole, a few taken today.
Ellis Cove 4 cars.
North Trestle 6 cars, from the vantage point I had saw only 4 fisherman working the area up and down stream.
Pineville (without boat trailers) 4 cars, and no one fishing in view from the bridge up or down stream.
Rt. 2A bridge 1 car.
No one parked at the Clam Shed or Ball Park.
No fisherman observed up stream of the Short Bridge (Eye of the Needle).
Looked like 1 drift boat down stream of the Town Pool working that corner. No one in the pool itself.
Black Hole 2 center pinners.

I also like to look for where the drift boats are anchored and fishing. after all, those guides are the professionals and know the river inside and out, and where to put their clients into the best opportunity at some fish.
It is not too often that I see a boat anchored Pinball Ally. So I stopped and watched a bit to see if anything was happening .. low and behold! I have walked by that area many a time to get to another hole and never once wet a line. So tomorrow I just may give it a shot and see how well a fly will do in the area.

Douglaston Salmon Run Report for 11/20/07

Another tough day reported by our anglers.
The water level is at 750 cfs. Water temperature was 40.

The lower fly zone had it normal contingent of fisherman today, I didn't have a chance to stop and talk to them, but the defeated look of the fisherman was unmistakable.

No more evident was in the Bovines, frustration was the order of the day in there. As I was heading out I ran into another fly fisherman who arrived just a short time before complained it was too crowded. Must not have been a regular to the Salmon River I figured, from Ellis Cove down to the first major spilt in the river I shared it with four others for most of the afternoon. Three were spin casters and we all waiting for the magical switch to be thrown and the shouts of "Fish On!" would be cast into the wilderness.. course followed by the murmur of.. "fish off."

While I passed my time practicing my casting techniques, I couldn't help but try to remember the last time I ever fished the stream during Steelhead season on a Tuesday.... in other words - what else do you have to think about when nothing else is going on... Good part of the whole thing, I was standing ankle deep in fast moving water of the Salmon River, it doesn't get any better than this.

As always, there is hope for today on the stream.
AK Skim

The bite was on today and went cold again by early afternoon.

Spoke to a number of different fisherman fishing various sections of the river from the Black Hole, Trestle, and Altar, we all experienced multiple hook ups starting around 1000 and cooled off around 1300.

Was it the constant rain, flow rate of 750 cfs... who knows, alls I am able to tell you it was great while it lasted.

Steelies are not in their normal winter holding spots in deep pools as of today. Head of pools and tail outs have been producing strikes.

Haven't seen a center pinner in the past couple of days, but spinners with bate have been knocking them silly today.

Good fly pattern, pink estaz... anything. I used up all my pink sucker spawns today with lost steelies and the bottom (hint).

Everyday I have been fishing two or three different locations, there hasn't been a lot of fisherman here, probably because of the holiday tomorrow and by Friday I fully expect to lots of company if the weather holds out.

Mostly rain all day temps in the mid 40's.

This afternoon ride around the river;
UFZ 1 car.
Paradise Pool 1 car.
Growing number in the LFZ.
Altmar a few (could have been the time of day 1530).
Schoolhouse - wire Holes a handful of fisherman.
South Trestle few cars in the lot. Watched a couple of drift boats anchor in this one spot... future reference.
Sportsman Pool.. no one at the time, state(?) doing some rehab to the site.
Observed no one in the Corner or Glass Holes.

As I was passing the Corner Hole observed a couple of trucks parked on the side of the road, belonging to HUNTERS with their rifles in hand. CAUTION if your in the woods walking around beware there are also HUNTERS in there with rifles.

Compactor Pool 2 cars along the highway.
Paper Hole 2 cars.
81 Hole, no one at the time.
Ball Park a couple of fisherman.
Clam Shed - no one.
Eye of the Needle - no one.
Town Pool 4 people fishing one down at the rivers bend.
Stair case no one.
Off bridge Street 4 people, maybe hauling their drift boat??
Black Hole 3 vehicles.

As always, wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.

AK Skim

Douglaston Salmon Run Report for 11/21/07

We will be closed on Thursday for Thanksgiving and reopen at 6 am on Friday.

A good day with almost everyone having multiple hookups.

The water level is at 750 cfs. Water temperature was 40.

Whitaker's Fly shop Report

Wednesday was another rainy day with temperatures reaching into the mid to upper 40's. The fishing pressure has been light to moderate depending on where you fish, but that will change as we go into the holiday weekend. We continue to get mixed reports, some groups are doing well, while others are not, but overall most anglers are getting into fish.

The lower end of the river is getting the least amount of pressure and each day fresh chrome along with the occasional brown trout have been landed.

The upper end of the river between Altmar and Pineville has produced steelhead action on a daily basis, but is also getting the most pressure.

No such thing as bad weather... only bad clothing.

Today you have better have had it on. First light this morning the thermometer read a balmy 19 degrees. BURRrrrrrrr.... Looking at the bright side the temperature rose to a mighty 26 degrees by this afternoon!

Pineville gauging station reported a flow rate of 1,170 cfs at a height of 6.9 feet. That is up 7/10 of a foot, must have been all the run off from the past couple of days.

Late this afternoon I happened to come a cross three center pinners from PA, outside of Malinda's. the seemed quite normal to me, not the rogues I have been made to believe they are. Actually they were very articulate and experienced in the art of center pin tactics and strategies. I was a welcome listener as they parted with some of their hard earned lessons learned.

That wasn't my first experience today with a center pinner from PA. Nope, not by a long shot. Not what your thinking, no I didn't have a horde of center pinners targeting the river directly in front of me, nothing of that sorta happened, actually where I was fishing I didn't see not a single center pinner within sight. No my first experience happened when I was taking a well deserved break for lunch and as I figured I would conduct one of my un-scientific polls of each of the pools and holes of the Salmon River to post here for your reading enjoyment.

As I was passing the Bovines a man was strolling down the roadway towards the Altmar parking area, I slowed and asked how the fishing was in the Bovines? Simple question I might add, sometime I get a good, sometimes I get a not so good, others may just lie between their teeth, today was different. The response I received was, "I don't know. Broke my rod on the second cast." Sure enough he was holding a two piece rod, that was sold to him as a four piece rod that very morning. Jagged edges of a once proud procession looked me squarely in the face. "aH yup, its broken alright." I said confirming his original statement. "This is the SECOND ROD I broke this morning, bought them both just day. Must be a manufactures defect." I kept my thoughts to myself at that point, but, generally after two snapped twigs like he was showing me, my best guess wasn't the rod builder, no siree bob, I would venture a purely speculative guess and say... operator error was the culprit??? He was headed back to All Sports Sporting Goods for a third rod. I couldn't but to wonder what the owner was about to feel when he seen this gentleman from PA walk back in with more pieces in his hand???

There was also more bad news for two owners of vehicles (1-NY 1-NJ tags) this time. While fishing the Staircase, they chose to make it easy on themselves and park in NO PARKING ZONE that is well maker at the end of James Street. Foolish thing is, there are two free and legal parking spots at the head of James St. they could have used, instead a burley Pulaski Police Officer with a hat right off the set of Fargo was writing them both tickets.

Case anyone hasn't noticed I have been writing just about everything except a fishing report... to this point.

Oh before I forget. My drive around report from noon today.
UPZ 4 cars.
Paradise Pool (questionable) roadside parking 2 cars.
LFZ 10 fishermen. 5 drift boat trailers.
Altmar 6 fishermen.
Schoolhouse - Wire Holes a fair number in there.
Ellis 24 cars.
Trestle-South 10 cars
Trestle-North ?? didn't go down there.
Pineville 6 drift boat trailers, 8 cars, and observed only 1 fisherman in the river there.
Sportsman Pool 3 cars.
Rt. 2A - Compactor Pool... no one parked on the roadway.
Ball Park 1 drift boat trailer
Clam Shed 1 car.
Eye of The Needle no one fishing.
Town Pool. Yankee Fly Shop made at least one $10 sale today, someone was fishing between the barriers on their water front.
Long Bridge - The Staircase did not observe anyone.
black Hole 3 cars.

Tough fishing, only one spin caster landed a Brown Trout, even the center pinners were shut out.

I was a heavy smoker for 25 years, gave them up 15 years ago, never had another. Today while fishing Clark's Falls the smell of cigar smoke steadily drifted down on my position (did I just say where I was fishing??) I mean GREATER Clark's Fall area.. within a simular zip code is what I meant to say, anyway, it was the first time since the months after quitting (pay no attention to the man behind the curtain) I wanted a cigar....
That didn't come out right, what I was trying to tell you is between the smell of cigar smoke and Corndog with his center pin teases.. I have come to the conclusion that they are both Satins in their own right.

As always, staying warm without being bitten.

Anyways...Thanks for the report,

Not so great news from my Binghamton paper:

"Salmon egg collection

The state's Salmon River Fish Hatchery in Altmar normally collects about 3.5 million King Salmon eggs from spawning fish in the Salmon River in the fall, and the eggs are hatched and reared to fingerling size at the hatchery. The fingerlings are stocked in Lake Ontario tributaries in the spring.

But this year extremely low water levels in the Salmon River during the spawning season resulted in significantly reduced numbers of salmon moving up the river to spawn. Consequently, there were less spawning salmon from which to collect eggs, making it impossible for the Salmon River Hatchery to meet its standard egg collection goals. By late October, less than one million eggs were collected.

In an urgent effort to supplement the low number of eggs, DEC Fisheries staff initiated egg collections from other salmon spawning areas, including sections of Eighteen Mile Creek. Teaming up with local anglers and sportsmen fishing groups, a week-long cooperative egg collection effort successfully yielded 792,000 additional eggs to add to those initially collected from the Salmon River. As a result of this effort, the Salmon River Hatchery's total Chinook Salmon egg count is now 1.9 million."

WOW! That's not good news. Looks like the run 3-4 years from now will be light of kings.

I'd bet I saw at least 100 kings being drug out of the river in stringers in September. How many eggs would that have been?

Maybe the NYDEC will have to impose a season on salmon fishing or a limit of 1 fish like they did with the steelhead.

FY 2007 so far I spent 46 days up there and one thing is for sure, the DEC Officer's were hard spot as opposed to 2006 Salmon season where they had an officer at just about every popular pool. More Officer's visible would have cut down the number of snagging. Heavy fines keep honest fisherman honest.

They delayed the opening of the LFZ by two months, and the sportsman all applauded it. Your suggestion of 1 King per day would increase the numbers making it to the hatchery, however, I believe business owners whos livelihood relies on the large contingent of fisherman would fight it.

Maybe a compromise of 1 king per day till the hatchery collects the projected number of eggs, and then open it up to what the present regulations state.

As always, willing to listen to suggestions to make the fisheries better. Even if it is coming from Corndog himself personally.

Hey,
Please correct me if I'm in error. I believe the toxic waste content of Lake Ontario salmon is so high that they could not be used in catfood. This was not to protect the cats, but to protect people that resort to augmenting thier diet with catfood. Thus limiting the number of Salmon per day should be a godsend to the fisherman. Alternatively, in twenty years the problem may solve itself as the meat fishermen can no longer reproduce. Toodles,Frogge.

One day on the SR, I overheard an old man say to a guy walking past with 3 king salmon on a stringer, "You're not going to actually eat that swimming botulism, are you?"

I couldn't help but chuckle and have pity on his family at the same time.

The NY regs for Chinook says "Eat none", and for Coho over 25" says "1 meal /month. Very good reason to C&R.

Heading up tomorrow night to fish thru Monday. Full report and pics when I get back. Based on the weather, looks like I better bring an extra t-shirt.

Whitaker's Fly Shop Report

Thursday was another lake effect snow day with temperatures in the 20's and no wind, making it look like a winter wonderland. The roads are in good shape and road crews have done an excellent job. With the recent lake effect snow, slush has been a factor early morning in the lower end of the river, but generally clears by mid day. The Douglaston Salmon Run reported it's one angler was unsuccessful on a half days effort. The fishing pressure remains light and the few anglers we spoke with worked hard for the fish they got and said the action was slower then the previous day. The upper end of the river between Altmar and Pineville has the highest concentration of fish for any one section, but is also getting the most attention. Most productive techniques have been bottom bouncing with egg sacs, single eggs or nymphs, Fly fishing with strike indicators and Float fishing with egg sacs or pink worms. Suggested patterns; Glo-bugs in blue, pink or chart. Rusher nymphs in blue, black, chart or purple. Chart. estaz eggs, Sucker Spawn, Woolly buggers in black, olive or brown. Black stoneflies

Good luck up there this weekend James. If you bring along the luck you displayed last year, you'll knock them silly.

Going to be cold...

Monday was another mild day with no wind and temperatures reaching into the upper 30's. The fishing pressure was light and we got mixed reports from anglers, some groups continue to do well, while others do not, but overall most groups are getting into fish. Anglers from the lower end of the river reported getting into some fresh fish under light fishing pressure. The Douglaston Salmon Run reported anglers having multiple hookups throughout the DSR. The upper end of the river between Altmar and Pineville has the highest concentration of fish for any one section, but is also getting the most attention.

AK,

I'm bringing your SR Report back from the dead and blowing off the dust.

Saturday afternoon, I received a call from fishing buddy asking me if I wanted to head north in search of steel. Wrapped up in work, family, and the usual intrapments that keep me from fishing, I hadn't even thought about steelhead yet this year. But, being a good friend I decided to go along so my buddy wouldn't have to make the trip alone.

When we got there Sunday morning the air temp was 28, water temp 34, the release at the dam was 2000cfs, and the water was pretty clear.

We drove to Altmar and looked down at the whitecaps on the river below the bridge. Holy crap, some looked to be 2' high. We decided that the best fishing would probably be on the slow side of current seems away from the ripping whitewater.

We started at the north side of the Tressel Pool and my buddy hooked his first fish on his first cast. Beautiful female brownie around 6 lbs. But, you all know what happens when you catch a fish on your first cast. He said, "I'm done, lets go home." That brownie was the only fish he hooked all day. That cursed first cast fish. But, he didn't get skunked, which the SR is known to do.

We hit a few more pools looking for slower water and many that we found already had drift boats sitting above them. That assured us that we had the right idea, and we just had to find a spot that wasn't being fished. The schoolhouse and ellis cove had it's usual lot of chuch-n-duckers, but that was about it for fishermen. I was suprised that we didn't see anyone in the petting zoo.

Over the course of the day we made many long hikes looking for that perfect spot. I did manage to hook up 4 times but only landed one dime bright female around 3 lbs. The other three got the best of me and my tippet by heading out into the rip as if they knew that would be their best chance of getting rid of me and my hook.

Weather wise, it was a great day. No wind and partly sunny reaching 42 by mid-day.

All-n-all a good day of fishing.

AK, is that Joe in your avitar? It's kinda dark and I can't tell for sure.

And yes AK, we fished the dark side.

Sorry all, no pics. I didn't realize the battery was dead in my digital camera.

CD;

I still read the Pulaski fly shop reports on a daily basis, but to read your first hand report was thrilling to say the least.

2k cfs is tough fishing... four hook ups... hummmm....
Nope.. nada... perish that thought of centre pinning.. stay true I have to keep reminding myself.. four did you say???? hummm...

Well the Patriots season should end the first week in February.. hey, might be just in time for a break in the weather up there.... dormant feelings of cold chrome are being resurged...

Yes, the avatar is of Mr. Humphries and Mr. Harvey.

As always, envious when not there...

Mostly pinners and spinners. Very few bottom bouncers. I saw that most of the guides out have come over to the dark side.

Two living legends, huh.

Gotta come over AK, the dark side awaits.
