Salmon River Report 2007

Sounds like a nice day. At least you each landed a fish. I got skunked back in November, but my dad landed a huge Rainbow down the road at the North Sandy Creek. What's the darkside? Center pinning I'm guessing? Just curious. Makes me want to get up there again, but the weather doesn't seem to agree with my days off.

DSR 01/16/08.
An excellent day, “ fresh big silver hens“ 12-14 pounders. The numbers were crazy...you wouldn't believe me.

The water level is at 750 cfs.
Water temperature was 34.

Whitaker's Fly Shop Report
Over the next few days the weather looks good and anglers should take advantage of the opportunity while it lasts. Wednesday started out cold with almost no wind, but we had blue skies with plenty of sunshine which helped warm things up. The fishing pressure was light and the majority of anglers we spoke with reported having a good day both in the upper and lower end of the river. In the upper end of the river the Lower Fly Fishing Zone, Schoolhouse Pool and Wire Hole are getting the most attention on a daily basis. In the lower end of the river the Douglaston Salmon Run reported an excellent day with, "fresh big silver hens" 12-14 pounders, the numbers were crazy and you wouldn't believe it. Sounds like we missed a great day at the DSR, if you were at work all day don't feel bad, I live here and missed out as well. Suggested patterns; Glo-bugs or sucker spawn, beadhead nymphs such pheasant tails, soft hackles and stoneflies.

I know of a couple of rabid steelhead fisherman that are up there today and tomorrow standing in the 34 degree water all the while it is snowing...

Lucky guy's... if it wasn't for the Pat's still playing.. who knows...

Awaiting your report upon your return.

01/19/08.
Action was good throughout the DSR with anglers landing three dozen steelhead.

The water level is at 500 cfs.
Water temperature was 34.

Our gates open at 7 AM. When the river is unfishable first thing in the morning due to slush, we will open at 9 AM.

Whitakers Fly Shop Report
We currently have fish spread out in the river from top to bottom. The fishing pressure has been light and the majority of anglers have been fishing the upper end of the river between Altmar and Pineville or in the lower end of the river in search of fresh fish. The mid section of river is getting the least amount of pressure.

Greetings from the Salmon River.

It was Sunday morning at 2:30am. Myself and 2 friends were loading up the truck to head up to the SR for 2 days of Steelhead fishing.

All was well until we reached Syracuse. Lake effect snow is something you can never predict. It was a whiteout, a blizzzard. Driving conditions were horrible. Watched a pickup pass us then loose control right in front of us. He nailed the guard rail on the shoulder then slid sideways across the highway and hit a bridge guard rail. He came to a stop, then gunned it going back across the road and hitting the guard rail again. I would assume he was a little upset. Then he guns it again and we followed him for about a half a mile, sparks flying everywhere. Then in the ditch he went. Every couple miles there was a car in the ditch.

But, that didn't stop us lunatic steelhead fishermen. We trudged forward and hit Pulaski around 7am. Fat Nancy's was all lit up as usual, awaiting our wallets with open cash registers. Then we hit the 1880 House for some breakfast. During breakfast we planned out our day.

First we went to Pineville. Air temp was 14 and it was snowing like mad. Water was at 500cfs and that icy greyish clear and 34 degrees. My frineds son got the first steelhead. A gorgeous 8lb hen. Then I got one on and lost it. Then my friends son proceded to catch 2 more plus a nice brownie. He had the spot. Then finally after about an hour my friend hooked and lost one.

Next we hit the Tressel. Third cast I hooked and landed a beautiful male all colored up.

Then we hit the Employment hole, the Schoolhouse, and a few other spots that nobody knows about (haha). The snow was relentless all day and ended up with 18" on the ground.

Then rest of the day went pretty much the same. When all was said and done, we hooked 12 and landed 7.

Only saw 4 other fishermen all day.

All in all an outstanding day...well except for the -4 windchill and icing guides.

Made it back in time to watch the Giants squeek their way into the Superbowl. Go Giants!

I'll post some pics soon.

You should have been here,
Cdog

Thanks for the report Corndog...

Sounds like other than the driving experience heading up there the day turned out just fine you all of you.

Having the river all to yourselves is always a plus.

DSR Report for 01/20/08.
This area went unfished today due to slush that did not clear.

The water level is at 500 cfs.
Water temperature was 33.

Whitakers Fly Shop Report

Monday morning we got hit again with heavy lake effect snow coming off Lake Ontario and in the afternoon the sun came out while the clean up continued. Snow totals may vary around the region, but we picked up around 3 feet here at the shop over the last 2 days. The few anglers we spoke with reported getting into fish in Altmar and said the road crews were working on the access lots in the afternoon. In the lower end of the river the slush ice did not clear.

I was sent this photo from the Pineville Police Department this morning asking if I knew this fisherman.

Corndog12208-1.jpg

APB Unknown fisherman
located Rt. 48 Bridge
Pineville, NY

I knew Corndog was up there this weekend in all the snow...

I asked the Detective to re-investigate the type of rod and reel the fisherman was using...

When he reported back it was indeed sad news... it was a centre pinner.

Has anyone heard from Corndog in the past couple of days?

Who ever that is in the photo, he sure went to the happy hunting grounds .. happy.

Sorry for the delay guys, but I had to wait until my fingers thawed out.

AK, yup that was me. Melinda had to get out her blow torch.

We decided to sleep in Monday. So, the alarm didn't go off until 7:30am. We got up and headed downstairs for breakfast. Linda told us that Pulaski got another 10" of snow overnight which meant a total of 28" on the ground. She also informed us that they were in a state of emergency and I81 was closed. As we ate breakfast we decided that we would make an essential emergency trip to Altmar, park in Melinda's lot, and fish from the Unemployment hole down the the Schoolhouse Pool.

As we headed up route 13 we could see that all the parking areas were snowed in and the plows had blocked them with 4-5' of snow. The air temperature was up 3 degrees to 17 and no wind, which was a plus.

As we walked across the Altmar bridge the river looked inviting. We quickly learned that you don't walk very fast in 28 inches of snow. We fished every current seem, pocket, and pool all the way down to the Schoolhouse and not one fish and not another fisherman in site. I wonder why? As I reached the top of the Schoolhouse Pool (that's me fishing there in the pic) I hooked up on my second cast, but he swam right at me and I couldn't get a good hookset and he was off. My only fish of the day. Then my friend's son hooked and landed one. The only one landed all day. He had another hookup but lost it.

What a difference a day makes. I don't know what makes them shut down like that.

Only saw 4 other guys on the river all day, and they used the foot trail we forged and followed us down to the Schoolhouse. Was that you PM?

All in all a great trip with 15 hookups and 8 fish landed.

Douglaston Salmon Run Report for 01/30/08.

This area went unfished today.
Fishable water is from the Joss Hole and upstream.

The water level is at 750 cfs.
Water temperature was 34.

Whitakers Fly Shop Report

On Tuesday we started out the morning with freezing rain, but by mid day temperatures were on the rise and we reached into the mid 40's late in the afternoon. The fishing pressure was light to moderate depending on the section of river, but overall the majority of anglers we spoke with reported getting into fish. The upper end of the river between Altmar and Pineville continues to get the most attention, with the Lower Fly Fishing Zone, Schoolhouse Pool, Wire Hole, Ellis Cove and Trestle Pool producing action on a daily basis. The Douglaston Salmon Run reported a decent day overall with anglers finding good numbers of steelhead under light fishing pressure. At the DSR the fishable water is from the Joss Hole upstream. The mid section of river is getting the least amount of pressure and is a good bet if your trying to avoid other anglers.

Whitaker's Fly Shop Report
Thur. February 7, 2008

The recent rain and mild temperatures no surprise with the change in water level. Wednesday was another decent day with temperatures in the 30's. The fishing pressure was extremely light and the few anglers we spoke with reported getting into fish in the upper end of the river between Altmar and Pineville. The Douglaston Salmon Run went unfished.

Checking the weather ahead for this weekend.... today the barometric pressure is stable which is very good meaning the weather might be stable this weekend and if so.. maybe a good time to head on up there. Snow conditions permitting. Not everyone is an Alaskan Husky like someone we all know... and foot drifts have no effect on.

I don't know if its accurate, but I just read a report that it's up to 2800 cfs. If true, you might want to wait a week.

but I just read a report that it's up to 2800 cfs. .

2000 cfs is tough.. hate to slip with 2800 cfs. WHOOoooo Nellie....

Thanks for the tip.

Either way I have a weekend pass and still might just head on up there.

If the snow isn't covering my place.

Any reports on the depth of snow in Pineville????

I haven't seen anything about snow depth, but I imagine whatever is there has been melting, hence the 2800cfs. Maybe hit one of the smaller tribs.

I don't know if its accurate, but I just read a report that it's up to 2800 cfs. If true, you might want to wait a week.

1800cfs coming out of the dam, so I'm sure it's over 2500 at Pineville, and 3000+ in the DSR. High water (up to 4000cfs) has never stopped me but I just got a call to reschedule cause they are expecting some really bad weather and windchills in the double digits below zero. Burrrrrrrrrrrr...

Oh well...maybe next weekend will be in the 60s.

Cdog

I just saw a report that it's supposed to be down to around 1000 cfs for the weekend. Bundle up AK and go for it.

DSR Report 02/08/08.

Our Angler success varied today from “a couple of floats under“ to double digit fish landed.
The fishing pressure is very light.

Fishable water is from the Joss Hole and upstream.

The water level is at 1,800 cfs. plus runoff.
Water temperature was 34.

Barometric pressure falling.
