Salmon River Report 2007

DoubleHaul, great fish you got there. Looking forward to doing some November fishing with you. Too bad I can't hit the Salmon till Nov.

You read my mind.. I'd rather get a silver guy for some reason and I know their more abundant come this colder weather. I'll shoot you a PM soon so we can set up a day to fish our area. Tight lines in Pulaski all.

Salmon River Report OCT. 27, 2007

Arrival in Pulaski last night driving from <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com
><st1:State w:st=
<ST1:pDelaware </ST1:p</st1:State>the entire trip was with my windshield wipers on. Normally driving that distance in the rain becomes a nuisance at best, but not when you’re going fishing on the <ST1:pSalmon River</ST1:p. Rain is a good thing, and much needed thing, an important thing, and the possibility of a sign of good fishing thing.

The ratta-tat-tat of rain hitting the roof of the trailer all night along with the Boom-boom, boom…boom….boom of the base player till oh-four-hundred this morning. See, Stoney has these hippy musical gatherings a few times a year. Live bands playing 24 hours a day … all weekend! This weekend as it turns out to be was one of them… boom..boom…. booommmm… But I do have to say at 0220 this morning the female singer was very good.

So needless to say starting off this morning I was a little on the slow side getting my ass in gear.

First look at the river and I was amazed at the flow rate, after being up here since August and the flow rate was from 166 down to 100 cfs and too see the river flowing at a breakneck speed of 750 cfs was a joy to behold. As I pondered in the pre-dawn view of water flowing by, the thoughts running in my head was of pod after pod of salmon and steel a-running..boom..boom…boom.

Anticipating hordes of my fellow anglers descending upon the river I first chose a location that I hoped would hold a few fish in what I had previously scouted area during the low-low water conditions of a couple of weeks ago. Fearing being late and not firmly anchoring that prime location, I was shocked to find only two other angles in there and neither of them were standing where I knew! the slot was that was holding that prized steelhead or Coho.

Did I indicate that it was still raining at this time? Well it was, and between casts, ripping leaves from my hook and no sign of even a fish within the zip code of where I was standing I decided to move on to another (hopefully promising) newly discovered holding spot…. I did say it was still raining didn’t I???

O/S WX: steady light rain, wind < 5 kts, air temp. 54 degrees (@1030), water temp 56, barometer 29.95 steady (which I took would be a good indication that the bite would be on).

Well this second location turned out as good as the first… No wonder why no one else was there.. well sorta.

Time to take a break, get something to eat, and re-evaluate my options for the remainder of the day. But first a drive about to get a better feeling on where everyone was. I was amazed by the fewer number of fishermen at this time of the season. Compared to the on slaught of fisherman that had descending upon the <ST1:pSalmon River </ST1:pjust two weeks ago, how dramatically the crowds had thinned out to steelhead season numbers.

Upper Fly Zone – half dozen cars
UFZ Paradise Pool roadside parking – 10 cars
Lower Fly Zone – really strange to see on one fishing that area, dozen or so cars, three drift boat trailers.
Altmar parking lot – two dozen cars. Some fishing the bend, most assumed were down at the schoolhouse pool.
Ellis Cove – two dozen cars
Trestle North – good number of cars, and fishermen in that general area.
Pineville - about two dozen cars.<O:p</O:p
Trestle South – half dozen cars.
Sportsman Pool – 1/8th of the lot filled.
Compactor Pool road side – dozen or so cars.
Compactor lot – half dozen cars, 2 drift boat trailers.
Roadside parking between Sportsman Pool and Compactor pool (Glass Hole short cut) which would normally have 10-12 cars parked there, only one.
Side and Long Holes had a decent number of fisherman in there.
Paper Hole parking area – 10 cars.
Lower paper & Trooper roadside parking – 4 cars where there would normally be a dozen or so.
Haldane Run – more people in watching the Bantams practice inside the rink, that fisherman in the area.
Ball Park – Where did EVERYONE GO???? Saw only 2 cars there.
Hardly anyone in the Clam Shed up to the Rt. 81 bridge.
Eye of the Needle – more customers in The End Zone Bar and Grill than on the water.
No one…. NO ONE was fishing the Town Pool.
Up stream of the <ST1:p<st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Long</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Bridge</st1:PlaceType></ST1:p, no one fishing. It is also posted no fishing.
Staircase – ahhh.. there they are. Shoulder to shoulder fishing a elongated pool against the wall. They did come prepared, on a small spit of land they had two blue canopy shelters put up. Creature comforts.. my type of fishing.
Black Hole Parking lot – as normal, about two dozen cars.
DSR – whoa… remember when I was told no room at the inn and I had to fish else where??? 24 cars!

I got to speak with a number of fishermen at most of the locations; this morning has been real slow every where.

No where did anyone say I “should have been here yesterday!” From all reports it was a very difficult day of fishing with the wind and leaves playing havoc. Whitaker’s shop worker had to haul in their OPEN flag before the wind tore it away.

Malinda reported that some fish had made it up as far as the bridge yesterday, so before you know it there should be some decent fishing in the upper fly zone soon enough.

I am going to have to post what was on Malinda’s fly pattern recommendation board for the hot go to flies because I had no luck today and everyone else I spoke to was in the same boat.

Patterns are;
Marabou shrimp pattern.
Glue eggs in red and orange.
Hot spot stoneflies, blue or purple.
Woolly Buggers in olive and brown/black.

Sun rise at 0726 and sun set today at 1812.

She also had posted a 16 ft, 2006 Hog Island drift boat for sale for $6,000. Dierks anchors included!

As always, there is tomorrow morning. Go Red Sox!

The fish are spread out and look for them in fast moving - transit water!

Saturday I fished pools and no luck... they were on the move and you just have to follow suit.

Rumor has it that they will increase the flow rate tonight to 1,000 cfs till Tuesday night in hopes of bringing more Salmon into the river and hopefully reach the hatchery.

Also in the rumor mill, that there is a large number of salmon eggs that are dead when they reach the hatchery...???

Maybe someone out there in the know will set the record straight.

What can you say...man and nature working together at it's finest. Maybe Andy should join some forums. SR fishermen have been saying for over a month that the river is to low and the kings aren't coming in and the ones that do are getting caught and kept or killed.

Salmon River Report October 30, 2007

Douglaston Salmon Run report from 10/29/07

A slow start with most of the steelhead action in the afternoon. The water level is at 750 cfs. Water temperature was 52.

Whitaker's Fly Shop Report

The increased water level is positive news and should help get fresh fish on the move. We currently have a mix of salmon and steelhead spread out in the river from top to bottom. The upper section of river is getting the least amount of pressure and each day more fish are making there way upriver with the increased water level.

Suggested patterns; Glo-bugs, Estaz eggs in chart, orange, pink or blue, Woolly buggers in black, olive or brown and black egg sucking leeches with red or orange head.

The increased water level is positive news and has helped bring fresh fish into the river. The lower end of the river has been producing steelhead action under light fishing pressure. Some days are better than others, but each day fresh steelhead have been landed, along with the occasional brown trout. The upper section of river continues to produce a mix of salmon and steelhead, with salmon trying to spawn in the gravel areas and steelhead nearby feeding on the eggs. The Douglaston Salmon Run reported that it's anglers managed to sort through the leaves and find good numbers of Steelhead under light fishing pressure. Suggested patterns; Glo-bugs in blue, pink or chart. Estaz eggs in chart and blue. Woolly buggers in black, olive or brown and purple or black egg sucking leeches with red or orange head. Flesh fly is also a good pattern to use now.

Just after Syracuse my fuel tank warning light went off reminding me I had about 50 miles before empty. I rarely pay any attention to such things... there is always a gas station when you need one badly enough.

As I came to a stop at the top of the off ramp in Pulaski, I remembered I needed to get some gasoline for the old buggy.

As I pulled into Fat Nancy's and slid my credit card into the gas pump, the young man filling his Ford Focus (PA plates) remarked, "Thats gonna hurt."

"Naw" I remarked, "I got this chariot in February, and I have more than thirty thousand miles on it already. With that kinda driving I like my creature comforts."

299 miles, 4 hours 47 minutes
Tank of gasoline, $75
Waking up in Pineville with steelhead running, PRICELESS

As always, rather be here than there.

Salmon River, October ?, 2007
A few weekends ago my evil stepson took his 9 year old to the SR.
Got this link in an e-mail yesterday.

I make no appologies for how the fish was handled.
Don was a confirmed "catch & kill" guy long before I married his mother.

It might take a while to download if you're on dialup.

I'm not in the video. I saw it for the first time today.

The "dad" is my stepson (different last name). He's helping his 9 year old son.

I don't recognise guy with the mohawk. I assumed it was just someone who was fishing nearby and stoped to help.

After that, is there any point in a step-grandpa taking the kid locally for bass, sunfish & NJ stockies? Seems like hard act to follow...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~House Keeping~~~~~~~~~
Sorry about putting all that into AK's topic. I didn't realize that the forum would automatically embed the movie and force a download. I added "code" tags to the link, so you can decide whether or not to watch it yourself.
~~~~~~~~~~~EDIT 11/04/07 ~~~~~~~~~~~
I was at my stepson's house yesterday afternoon. I got the story.

Both "Mohawk Guy" and the guy who took the video were complete strangers who happened to be fishing nearby. The substandard quality of the video can be attributed to the fact that it was taken on a cell phone.

They also took a few Salmon, but that was the kid's only steelhead.

Great video Pete!

Now there is a new steelhead fly fisherman for life!

Tip of the cap to his Dad for bring him along and teaching him.

Trout, bass fishing... doesn't really matter when you really think of it. What is IMPORTANT is that you do bring him fishing, baseball games... attend school plays.. what ever.

As always, when you do something with a child, it becomes a life long memory.

Woke up to 34 degree temperatures this morning in Pineville. I guess the temperature just reflected my fishing experience of yesterday, cold.

That is steelhead fishing, some days and seasons you get shut out.

I guess there was about 40 people working the Douglaston yesterday and it was only at about 1330 that I saw my first bent rod. I spoke with the spin caster and he told me it was his third of the day, the largest one broke off but the two he landed were in the 12-16 inch range.

I worked the Meadow Run down past the Lower Clay Hole area looking for any slot, riffle or pool that might be hiding a steelie or two. Worked and worked this one area between the two and even though I would occasionally see one making its way through the shallows, the booker just kept right on going past me to some other pool to rest... that kinda day.

Most of the other fisherman in the DSR must have been working the Josh Hole up river to the Little Black Hole as much as I could figure.

However at 1330 when I came off the river the paring lot had only a quarter of the cars still there. I guess I wasn't alone, so in the box I guess I have to give myself a "K", not a backwards "K" because I did go down swinging.

Took a ride around to see where all the smart, knowledgeable fisherman were.

  • Town Pool and Eye of the Needle, less than a dozen in each one.
  • Ball Park and Clam Shed Holes, a ghost town so to speak.
  • Compactor Pool, half dozen cars parked on the road side.
  • Sportsman Pool lot, 8 cars.
  • Trestle south lot, more than a dozen cars.
  • Altmar Parking lot was jammed with more than a couple of dozen cars, and a good contingent of fisherman working the Unemployment Line.
  • Lower Fly zone parking lot had at least 10 cars with drift boat trailers parked there. A good sign.
  • Also spotted three gentlemen rigged up and headed into the water to fish the LFZ. I went up to them to inform them it was closed until November 15th. Turned out the trio was from France. Later that evening while in Malinda's they came in and appear to be a yearly visitor to the Salmon river. Malinda even pulled out the Chistmas Card she received last year. Nice drawing of a full dressed salmon fly.
  • Upper Fly Zone had 12 cars sitting there.
  • Wire Hole parking on Tarr Hill Road had a dozen cars.
  • Ellis Cove Area, had roughly 35 cars parked along there. Saw more cars parked along the road at the road side parking for the Muskrat Hole than I have seen in a long while... hummm.. what is going on in there?
  • Pineville had roughly 15 cars, but only a couple of fisherman in view.
So as you maybe able to see, all the action is now in the upper sections of the river.

Well, not only does the air and water Temperatures tell you it is steelhead season, the lack of traffic racing up and down Rt.13, no problem getting a good parking spot any where, the fly shops where the employees out number the customers, and Friday night when I arrived there wasn't 72 bonfires welcoming me to the camp grounds. It's steelhead season alright.

As always, some days your in luck and other's...

Douglaston Salmon Run Report for 11/4/07

The action was spotty today. Anglers on the move were successful.

The water level is at 500 cfs. Water temperature was 50.

Whitaker's Fly Shop Report

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Salmon River Clean up over the weekend on a job well done.

On Sunday we had a mix of sun and clouds along with scattered showers late in the day. With the recent water levels fresh fish have been entering the river and are spread out from top to bottom. The lower end of the river has been producing steelhead action under light fishing pressure. Some days are better than others, but each day fresh steelhead have been landed, along with the occasional brown trout. The upper section of river has also been producing steelhead action between Schoolhouse and the Trestle, under the most fishing pressure.

Suggested patterns; Glo-bugs in blue, pink or chart. Estaz eggs in chart and blue. Woolly buggers in black, olive or brown. Purple or black egg sucking leeches with red or orange head. Flesh flies have also been working well.

Whitaker's Fly Shop Report

On Tuesday we had a mix of sun and clouds along with much colder temperatures and scattered showers late in the day.

We got mixed reports from anglers depending on where they fished, some groups did well, while other groups did not.

The lower end of the river is getting the least amount of pressure and each day fresh chrome along with the occasional brown trout have been landed.

Some days are better then others, but moving around and covering lots of water has been the key to success in the lower end.

The upper end of the river between Altmar and Pineville has produced steelhead action on a daily basis, but is also getting the most pressure.

The Douglaston Salmon Run reported a decent day overall for it's anglers.

The water level is at 500 cfs. Water temperature was 50.

Whitaker's Fly Shop

Wednesday was the coldest day of the season with our first wintry mix of rain, sleet, hail or snow depending on the time of day.

Douglaston Salmon Run

A good day of Steelhead fishing with most Anglers having plenty of action.
The water level is at 500 cfs. Water temperature was 46.
Note the drop in water temperature of 4 degrees.

Whitaker's Fly Shop Report

With the current water level and recent stretch of beautiful weather, no surprise with the increased fishing pressure.

Were still getting mixed reports from anglers depending on where they fished, but overall most groups are getting into fish.

Some days are better then others, but moving around and covering lots of water has been the key to success in the lower end.

The upper end of the river between Altmar and Pineville has produced steelhead action on a daily basis, but is also getting the most pressure.

Suggested patterns; Glo-bugs in blue, pink or chart. Estaz eggs in chart and blue. Sucker Spawn. Woolly buggers in black, olive or brown. Purple or black egg sucking leeches with red or orange head. Flesh flies have also been working well.

Douglaston Salmon Run 11/11/07

Spotty action was reported by our anglers throughout the DSR.

The water level is at 500 cfs. Water temperature was 40.

Douglaston Salmon Run Report for 11/13/07

A better day with most anglers reporting multiple hook-ups.
The water level is at 500 cfs. Water temperature was 40.

George O'Brien's report from Saturday Nov. 10th.

Scott Leshak & his Brother, Roman treated their dad, Roman Sr. to an early Christmas present=a trip on the salmon River for Steelhead! Steve Kowalski helped me guide this trio of FUN guy's for a great time fishing for these silver rockets! Dad had the sure fire/hot rod today fighting 5 large Steelhead and landing 4 of them! Scott and JR. fought a some fish only to lose them (for a variety of reasons! The guy's have already made plans to come back again next year!

You can always tell when the client's and the guide had a great day by the amount of laughter and goodwill after the drift boat is safely on its trailer.

I know these guy's had a great time and were talking about next years trip.

See, my car was parked right next to them while I was rigging up and over heard it all.

Maybe I should have said hi to George, but they were having too good of a time, so I minded my own business and headed towards the water.

AKS

AK,

Wierd day on the SR yesterday. 6 out of every 10 guys I saw on the river were spin fishing with floats and sacks. Including 2 guides and their clients. And pinners out numbered fly rodders 3-1. DSR included.

As for me, I had a heaping helping of humble pie.

Cdog

Sory to hear no belated birthday present from the SR. I always wash my Humble pie down with some coffee and smokes as I work my way back to NJ.

Maybe a dumb question but what exactly is center pinning?

Pete,

It is not a dumb question. I saw a center pinner a few years ago and thought it to be a spey rod, with mono on it instead of fly line.

Bobber fishing can explain it. Hang an egg sack down from the bobber (depending of the depth of water) and allow it to drift (dragless) down stream. What allows this to happen is the reel itself. Looks like a fly reel, except that on top of the bail it is open, allowing the line to come off the side of the reel. The reel does not have to move for the line to come off unlike a fly reel.

To sum it up, it is a form of bate fishing.

You will catch a lot more fish with this method than with a traditional fly rod and flies.
