I have not made it up to the river yet this year. However my friend Randy was going to Syracuse on business last week, so we encouraged him to bring a rod and give it a try for his first time.

In turn he grabbed one of his colleagues whom had no rod but apparently had a pretty good camera.

Randy did not catch anything on his first short trip there but his buddy caught these two great shots on his camera...

I have a friend who was up on the SR this past weekend. He said the fishing was amazing. Steelies and Salmon.

After five seasons of putting up with disrespectful anglers, I have now decided to post my property: PRIVATE! So, anyone who wants to fish behind my shop must now seek permission from me. You must come to the front of my shop during shop hours and you must ask first. If it's not crowded and I feel it's okay for you to fish behind my shop, then you must purchase something. For now I am requiring a minimum purchase of $10. I am also limiting the time of fishing. You will have two hours. I want everyone to have a good time here and catch fish. I do not want people on my property who do not support my tackle shop. While I do not "own" the river, I do own the property beneath the river and if you're on it, standing, walking, or wading, you're trespassing. Once you're warned first by me, you have the opportunity to leave. If you do not leave or continue to be on my property, I will have you arrested. I"m not joking or playing around here folks. I am a business owner and I gave you 4 seasons to take care of my property. Last year I had a sign up that read, "You Keep It Clean, We Keep It Free".......and while most of you were pretty good about it, there were a lot that were not. So, consider it "weeding". I'm "weeding" out those who don't give a shit, trash my property, and have the nerve to buy all their gear from another place and then litter it on my property. There will be no hogging a spot. If I give you permission to fish on my property you will have 2 hours and then another angler will have a chance. It's not fair that you stand there all day long and hog a spot when I have lodging guests, shop customers, and family members who all want the opportunity to fish and catch a fish behind my tackle shop. So, if you're upset, too bad. It's my property and I can post it. I have every legal right. The Douglaston Salmon Run took their case to the US Supreme Court and they charge $30 a day to fish on their property. At first everyone was pissed off and now look, the DSR has had sell out days. So quit your whining and be a good sportsman.....respect the river, the other anglers, and the property owners. Last but not least, put yourself in my shoes. What if you were in the same situation? What if you had property and wanted to post it? Would you like people trespassing on it? Certainly not.
These new rules I have are for each day. Each day is a new day. Jus like the DSR. Each day costs $30 down there and each day it's a minimum of $10 purchase from my shop....not this...."I bought a soda from you last year b.s." </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

AK, I was wondering when you would post this.

I just saw it tonight. Haven't had all that much time to even put my report from this weekend up.

So here is my Columbus Day weekend fishing report summed up in three words....

Unbelievable..

Unbelievable...

Unbelievable....

It was like salmon fishing in Alaska.

As always, when it is this good... you can only savor the feeling for just so long.

AK Skim

As I got onto the off ramp in Pulaski, the lights shimmering from the eves of Fat Nancy’s giving it a halo effect in the evening haze to symbolize entrance into the sacred ground of the <ST1:pSalmon River</ST1:p, I knew I just might have a chance of a magical weekend of fishing.

As the old saying goes, every dog has his day.

I managed to arrive at the DSR entrance at oh-dark-thirty the following morning and learned my fate, all tickets were sold. I was tempted to tell the gentleman at the gate about the vision I had observed the night before, but figured that not all people are believers.

Mickey D’s and a quick breakfast from the drive thru...

Every time whether it is a restaurant or bar and after I place my order, I always say thank you, common courtesy right? However this time after my thank you, I received a “your welcome” from the magical box. What I found today at Mickey D’s is not so common any more. Does that speak well of the community of Pulaski as a whole or we as a society come to not expect it at all. As it turned out, it wasn’t an isolated incident. I was greeted that way all the time up there.

I figured I would scout out a few places and see where the early action would be. Walked into the Ace Hole, Clark’s Falls, Paper Hole, Lower Paper Hole, Railroad Bridge Pool, Trooper Hole (like a scene out of the movie Stand By Me, dodged a train on the bridge) 81 Hole, Clam Shed, Haldane, Ball Park, Eye of the Needle, and watched the show in the Town Pool from the bridge. All the while making notes on each of the pools and river bottom in the low water conditions.

At 1130 I lined up with everyone else and was worthy enough to be awarded pass to fish the DSR in the morning. Things thirty dollars can get you now a days.

Sunday and a ticket to play in the DSR.

Early morning light I made my way down towards the Meadow Run and saw an open space that appeared to have some possibilities. So I rigged my rod with a blue wing pattern. I like to fish early mornings in low light with blue, black, or purple patterns. With a spey rod you have to be up stream of your intended target zone, too close and you get the feeling of being hamstrung. On my second cast I had a short lived hit and he was off before I knew it. Third cast into the same area and a hook up that lasted till I was able to tail Sir King Salmon. As the sun began to raise over head and a few more fisherman started to settle in around me with the occasional hook up that started to become more frequent as time passed. You can never get use to the sight and sound of a fisherman hooking into a salmon for the first time. The tranquil sound of rushing water passing bare rocks only to be broken by the yell of “I got one, I got one!!!” After switching out flies to match the changing conditions without any luck for an hour and decided to head on down the river a bit further in search for a little more casting room.

This time I settled in on a short but deep narrow run that had a small pool in the middle that was holding some fish. It wasn’t long before hook ups became common in the general area. Run after run of King and Coho’s were coming through, with someone hooking into the occasional Brown Trout and Steelhead.

All the while I keep noticing the group of fisherman just down stream with hook up after hook up, sometimes three would be playing fish at the same time. Few times they followed the salmon up to where I was and as it passed you could tell it was fouled hooked. The lads were hooking into way too many fish in too short a time for it to be anything but foul hooking. I kept watching and at first they didn’t appear to be lifting or ripping at the fish. Finally I caught on to it, it was very subtle in what they were doing, hard to explain, but they were casting with a good deal of lead shot on the line over the fish and slowly hand stripping it in. I have to admit, after they had landed the fish, each of them took great care in reviving the fish as best as possible. It was amazing to watch, but the action cooled off very quickly when an employee of the DSR appeared.

It was time to switch rods, with the close quarters I felt more comfortable with a single handed rod and I could cast straight out in front of me.
<O:p</O:p
Having switched rods or was it the pink coloured fly, the time of day, the timing of pods arriving, I don’t know but the switch was thrown and the bite was on. For a time I thought I was fishing in Alaska and not on the Salmon River in <ST1:pNew York State. I have to admit, it was fun while it lasted and waited for the next run, and it is times like this I wished my brother was there fishing because he likes catching lots of large fish and has trouble understanding why I primarily like fishing for small brookies. Besides, he is always good for a free dinner later on.

Earlier I had observed one fisherman who had trouble getting his hook out of the salmon’s mouth, wasn’t because the hook was set deep, nope, he just didn’t like touching the fish. Finally after he got his hook back, he sort-a just used his toe to get the salmon back into the stream, That’s when I started reeling in my line and was going to go over there and pick up the fish and get it into the stream myself, except another fisherman had the same idea and tailed it back into the water.

I did see a number of fish with chunks of flesh missing and can only assume that the rippers had some very good shots at them. But I didn’t see the great numbers of irresponsible fisherman that you hear about. The vast majority of the fisherman that I observed all weekend long were very ethical in their tactics and treatment of the fish

As always, bow-wow.

Thank you for that report. I'm not a Salmon River visitor, well twice, but appreciate that it sounds like the area is getting its act together.

Whitaker's Fly Shop Report 10.10.07

On Wednesday we had a mix of sun and clouds along with temperatures in the upper 60's. Despite the recent rain, the water level is still low, but anglers are happy to be here and continue to maintain a positive attitude while making the most of the conditions. We have fish in the river from top to bottom with the lower section of river producing the most action. The fishing pressure has increased and the lower end of the river continues to get the most pressure. The mid to upper section of river is getting the least amount of pressure and has fish holding in the deeper holes such as Sportsman, Trestle and Schoolhouse. In the lower end of the river DSR, Estuary, Blackhole, Staircase, Town Pool and Ballpark continue to produce the most action under heavy fishing pressure. The Douglaston Salmon Run reported an excellent day with a large push of kings throughout the run.

Someone posted on another board that they heard it straight from Dan Bishop - Region 7 Fisheries Manager. Apparently they are delaying egg taking at the hatchery for another week due to higher than normal river temps.

Center Pinning on the Salmon River

Last weekend while scouting the river I had the opportunity to watch someone fish using a center pin rig just on the up stream side of the Town Pool. I have to admit I was very interested in how he fished and basically the results in using such a rod and technique.

I didn't have to wait long for before the antics of the fisherman really got my attention. I remember reading some of the posts on the incredible long drifts they are able to obtain using a center pin rod, and their perceived attitudes of the center pin fisherman as me first and if you don't like go some place else.

Between the bridge (down stream) and the center pin fisherman there were two other fisherman standing working the area right up against the bridge. All's I have to say is they were so well mannered and very slow to anger.

They only had about a 15-25% of their time to fish their line before they had to start dodging the center pins line over their heads. Only when the center pinner was retrieving line is when the other two fisherman could concentrate on their lines and fish. As the flow carried the bobber down stream the line from the rod tip to the bobber was above the two fisherman's heads and they would get in the way of the line. So you had this scene of two guys bobbing and weaving attempting to dodge the line. Honestly if it was so sad it would have been funny.

Earlier in the day I stopped in a fly shop and they had a center pin rod and reel there for $350.00 and it was the first time I had a chance to inspect it up close. After watching the show at the Town Pool there is no way I would ever consider using one.

As always, I don't need to catch a fish that badly.

AK Skim

Trying to fish a centerpin with a long drift thru the town pool could get dangerous for the angler. I don't think that many of the people fishing that pool would be very tolerent.

I'm not totally against centerpinners (I own one, gulp - but rarely use it) and it is only a modified way of float fishing with a cane pole (which I do a fair amount). However, just because a centerpinner can trot a rig across the pool doesn't mean it isn't rude to do. It's akin to having a distance flycaster wring out a cast over a fish you are working 30 ft in front of you or having a spoon fisherman plop a spoon a rod length from you. Everyone sees those things as just plain rude - but many centerpinners don't grasp the concept of personal space.

First time I duck under a line a warning is uttered.

Second time I duck the line is cut - and I would expect others to do that to me.

Saw this on Whitaker's site today.

ATTENTION; THE LOWER FLYFISHING AREA WILL BE CLOSED UNTIL NOVEMBER 15TH, 2007. Due to drought conditions the fall Salmon River base flows of 335cfs have been reduced to 100cfs. The Lower Flyfishing Area is a staging area for fish as they prepare to enter the NYSDEC Salmon River Hatchery. We need to ensure that adequate numbers of fish will enter the hatchery to meet egg quotas. Also the low flow and warm water situation that we are presently encountering could result in substantial mortality of caught and released fish. Therefore under Section 10.2[g] NYCRR which designates special regulations for the Catch & Release Flyfishing Only Areas on the Salmon River, the Lower Flyfishing Area from the County Route 52 Bridge upstream to the marked boundary at Beaverdam Brook will be closed until NOVEMBER 15th, 2007.

Good numbers of kings continue to enter and move through the DSR.

The water level is at 100 cfs. Water temperature was 54 at noon.

Water temperature had dropped.

Whitaker's Fly Shop

Saturday was mostly cloudy with cooler temperatures along with scattered showers in the evening. The water level is still low, but it hasn't stopped anglers from coming up, having some fun, catching some fish and making the most of the conditions. We have fish in the river from top to bottom with the lower section of river producing the most action, but each day more and more fish are making it to the upper end of the river. The mid to upper section of river is getting the least amount of pressure and has fish holding in the deeper holes such as Sportsman, Trestle and Schoolhouse. In the lower end of the river DSR, Blackhole, Staircase, Town Pool, Ballpark, Papermill and RT 2A continue to produce the most action under moderate to heavy fishing pressure.

Fished the SR DSR Saturday 10/13.

Water temp was 56. Probably due to all the rain. River was up a bit and a little off colored. Which I feel was the reason we did so well. We stayed busy fighting fish throughout the day. We got there around 7:30am and were shocked yet glad that the DSR parking lot was only about half full. Which made for plenty of room to fish.

This is my 10th year going up. I was supprised how many Salmon were in the river with it this low. We had fish in front of us all day long. We mostly landed kings, but also got 1 steelie on a salmon color egg pattern, 1 brown on a oregon cheese egg pattern, and 3 coho's. Fished black woolies, black stones, egg sucking leaches, and egg patterns. Black worked the best. Probably cause it was overcast or raining much of the day.

The fish were not hard to revive. Probably cause of the colder water temps.

CD:

Thanks for the report... I think!

If I had any idea that the DSR wouldn't have been sold out, on Friday I would have just kept driving. Fished the DSR yesterday.... (#4 BC won!)

After staying up till the last out of the Sox game to me wasn't so bad, however, I am now truly sad, mainly because I could have been fishing instead of watching the J-E-T-S lose A-G-A-I-N.

Did I say you gave an outstanding report?

The fly selection and colour will help other's try to figure out the hot go to flies to bring along when they head up there.

As always, Go PATS !

AK Skim

Blue and Purple in the DSR were the ticket for me.
I went to the hatchery & darn few fish in & as I understand, they have not collected eggs yet. Doesn't look good. Egg take will be pretty low??????????? C&R might be a really good idea.

I went to the hatchery & darn few fish in & as I understand, they have not collected eggs yet. Doesn't look good. Egg take will be pretty low???????????

Makes you stop and wonder what the future will hold?

However, you do have to commend NY DEC for their decision to hold back the opening of the Lower Fly Zone (LFZ) first from September 15th to October 15th, now back another month to November 15th.

Closing the DSR and the river this year would be an economic disaster for the town of Pulaski as some have expressed interest in, realistically speaking, that it would never pass.

Have to agree with DH on catch and Release and fish properly.

THE SALMON RIVER FLOW

Until 7:00 PM today, 100 CFS

From 7:00 PM today until 11:58 PM Mon, 185 CFS

...UPDATED AS OF 10/19/07...

FISHING THROUGH OUT THE RIVER IS GOOD AND WITH LESS PRESSURE DURING THE WEEK DUE TO SMALLER CROWDS YOU CAN EXPECT GOOD RESULTS. RAIN IS IN THE FORECAST OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS AND THAT SHOULD ALSO HELP. IF YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT COMING UP TO THE SALMON RIVER FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS OF FISHING NOW WOULD BE AN EXCELLENT TIME TO COME.

Douglaston Salmon Run report for 10/23/07

Another decent day , with a mix of Salmon and Trout.
The water level is at 335 cfs. Water temperature was 62 at noon.

Whitaker's Fly Shop

Please check the waterline for the latest update, the water level has been increased. On Tuesday we had much cooler temperatures along with rain showers for most of the day. The increased water level along with runoff from the rain is positive news and should help get fresh fish on the move. We currently have fish spread out in the river from top to bottom with the mid to lower section of river producing a mix of salmon and trout. The upper section of river is getting the least amount of pressure and each day more fish are making there way upriver.

Makes you stop and wonder what the future will hold?

The above quote is in regards to the poor (so far) egg take at the hachery.

I don't know much about fisheries management, but it seems to me that if the salmon popluation dropped, it would be to the advantage of the steelhead and browns. It seems I heard that one of the reasons that lake Erie has such ridiculous numbers of steelhead is beacuse fewer salmon are in the lake.

If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will be along soon to straighten me out :D
