All this hot and humid weather has got me thinking more and more about big lake run browns and steel ! Heard that with the increased flows they had a week or so ago brought in some salmon. It will also be interesting to see how the browns they stocked in the DSR fared. Fish On!!:)

I wonder if the whitewater releases will bring a few in. I can't make the next one in July, but maybe August? Maybe get there Sunday and fish Sunday evening and Monday as the water drops?

Maybe Jeff we'll have to give it a go and see. It's just around the corner though and we'll be back in the thick of some good battles! And maybe land a few of these!:)

No fish no water. can we take my boat out onto the lake?????????? nice

Todays news no more meat hunting in the DSR it has gone total C&R. And a change is coming up for next year in the upper fly zone. They want to do away with all sinking lines and tips it more than likely will be floating lines only in the summer months.

Your talking about the summer months not spring and fall, with regards the sinking tips?

Yes it is the summer months only WBDluver I can see why to, when the water is at 135 you can foul hook a lot of fish using intermediate and sinking lines as there are a bunch of fish in there.

saw some people nymphing with shot on their leader last wknd too...woulda said something but wasnt sure of the dates.

"Between May 1 and August 15, no supplemental weight shall be placed on the leader, tippet or fly line."

somebody had posted advisories in the fly zone as well warning of thermal stresses. good idea but obviously not everyone heeded them. water was well above the 72 that was posted (i got a reading of 73-74 at 6am on saturday at paradise); we went looking for bass downstream.

When I was up there the river was at 135 and the morning temps were 65 at day break and by 11am 72+. There are some very nice smallies being taken on a pink worm saw one about 3lbs come up yesterday. Lots of rock bass to play around with as well. On a brighter note the salmon are coming in closer to the shore they are getting them in 200-150 feet of water . It won't be long now get tying and be ready!! Fish On!!

Allen, I'm hoping to get up there this year for the first time. What patterns should I be tying? Thanks!

Alright..............it's coming. What's everyone doing to prepare. I for one, look forward to November when all the chuckleheads have left the river, but certainly do go up a handful of times in September and October. It appears a bunch of us were up there last weekend during the release......we probably fished together and did not know it. This is where I am at in preparation for the Salmon Season.

  • Bought my first season pass to the DSR.
  • Finished building my Sage TCX 9140-4 for swinging big uglies in front of fresh annoyed King and Coho.
  • Have my broken Beulah 8/9 switch rod back from warranty repair for use as a backup rod.
  • Am tying a heck of alot of various size 6 -10 estaz/nymph/hybrid Fl UV nymph patterns (will post a pic once the box is complete)
  • Have 2 flasks filled with Makers Mark.
  • Camera battery is already charged for pics of the fish and better yet, the goons - aka: rock people
  • Have my spools of Ultragreen ranging from 10-15lbs.

Still need to do:
  • Have the car inspected
  • Buy a 12 pack of Corona

I might try to head up on the 28th, even though I know there won't be any fish, but I have to try out my new 700 grain skagit flight.

I would show you a picture of the a Skamania I caught earlier this summer, but you wouldn't believe me. :)

Where are you guys at????

How much was the season pass?

$450 - I'll see by years end if it was worth it. I am up on the river alot, so I'm sure it will be. I don't golf, if I did, I figure that would be about 8 times out on course?

The daily rate is up to $45.

Most everything I need to go up is ready , couple of new rods fresh line on the reels . Working on filling the spey and bugger boxes stone fly and egg patterns done . Just looking for 500cfs plus and cooler weather can't wait!:)

got a new reel for the switch, new korkers guide boots (love 'em), half bottle of evan williams single barrel (if it lasts that long) and a year's worth more experience.

Ed, I'm with you on loving the Korker guide boots. What are the chances you were at speynation and you were the guy(s) I talked to about them when putting them on by the trunk of my car. I know the chances are slim, but worth asking.

If you haven't tried the various soles, for the Salmon River, the rubber sole removable carbide studs are great for up there, just use locktight on the studs. I've tried the kling-on studs and was not impressed in comparison.

I love my Korkers have been using them for the last three years straight literally. The carbide studs work fantastic and stick great in all water and winter conditions. The only time I find them a bit slippery is when the salmon start to die off I think it is oil expelled as the carcasses break down.:)

Since the summer season is really over and the water is too warm to responsibly swing for them........and to show all you non-believers, I changed my avatar.

I was there but it wasnt me (i (well, the GF...with my ticket...) won the gift cert to Malindas that I bought them with). When i first started seeing BOA laces on shoes and boots i thought it was just a weird, bulky gimmick. Wading (and maybe mountaineering) boots must be about the perfect application and now have me "taking notice" every time I pass BOAs in the store.

came with carbides and felts and i got a set of lugs to make backwoods hike-ins a little more manageable.

I suggest taking the lugs out and putting a dab of locktite on the threads, and then screwing them back in with a socket. I didn't do this at first and lost 1 to 2 per outing, since, I have lost non and the carbide on the tips last a very long time. FYI - these are not good soles for the Ausable & Saranac rivers as they slide off the rocks/boulders(maybe rocks are too hard?) I bought a pair of the studded felt for when I am up there. Fishwest sells extra soles, no shipping, no tax.

you guys have any size issues?
i have the pro boots (boa cable) and a set of their 'sneakers'. both are going out for sale.

i had to order a sz12 to fit the foot that goes into a sz10 New Balance or Merrill...

they do work well tho'. the lacing system alone is well worth the price in freezing/snowy weather!

honestly...i never checked what size mine were...tried on a couple pairs and took the ones that fit. i will say that i have narrow feet and ankles so i add padding in the form of extra insoles for non-winter fishing.

I think it is recommended to get them in 1 or 2 sizes larger, Malinda told me and it is also on Cabelas site if you order them through Cabelas
