Salmon River fishing report 2010-11

For normal wading conditions, go up 2 sizes. I wear a 12 shoe, size 14 korker boot. I too have long skinny planks for feet and they fit perfectly. I also have the torrent sandles/shoes in size 12, but don't wear anything on the feet when using them.

I am fishing the salmon river in october with a guide. My cabin i am staying in is in Dansville. Can anyone recommend locations to fish in Dansville.

Not sure where Dansville is other than south of Rochester, which is no-where near the SR. If your going with a guide, they will know where to take you.

Perhaps Mannsville??? (just north of Sandy Creek)
Your paying for a guide - sit back, relax, listen & learn!

Im getting excited for this years steelie season. I now live under 2 1/2 hours away so will spending plenty of time up there. I still need to get my studded soles for my korkers and tie up a crap load of sucker spawn, black stones and estaz eggs! The new rod i got at the end of last season only saw one fish to shore in my final trip, hopefully it will get a good work out early!

well its almost time for them kings to start sniffing around. we been doing good on kings and browns in 100fow, there was a king spoted in dsr ,bu the water is still very warm. all the kings have been running a little bigger this year many over 30lbs so far. its going to be a good year.

here some fish porn to get everone ready for the upcoming season

Until 8:00 PM today, 185 CFS
From 8:00 PM today until 9:00 PM tomorrow, Tue, 1,800 CFS

The reservoir is topped off for sure!! This is a good sign for steady flows throughout the fall. I'm planning on heading up the Saturday to try out the new rod and skagit head......I hope it comes down to at least 750.

Hey Guys,

I have a quick Salmon river equipment question. Any recomendations on Rods and Rod configs? Whenever I've gone up, I've typically used 9ft 8wt's and 9wt's? Looking forward to the season, and seeing the beautiful trestle Pool and the Upper fly area... Thanks,
Walter H

Hi Walter,
9' 8wt should be fine for salmon and steelhead . A 9'6" or a 10' outfit is a little better I prefer a 10' 7wt for steelhead as it allows for more control over mending and roll cast and a 9'6" 8wt for salmon . But as with all equipment choices it is up to the individual as it is a personal preference. The most important piece of equipment is your reel it should have a good smooth and strong drag that is sealed so it does not freeze up on you during cold weather fishing.:)

It's almost time going up this weekend to test the waters!! FISH ON!!:)

Thanks Broadheadscreek,

It all a prefrence thing, I know. I hear such diffrent things, from diffrent people. I own no rods over 9ft', but I have more actions and weights than I know what to do with. LOL. Thanks for the advice.

Walter

Hi Walter,
I neglected to say I like the switch rods as well for both swinging and nymphing. These are awesome tools of the trade depending on which one you choose it can be an all around rod for both salmon and steelhead either a 7-8wt or an 8-9wt they come in lengths of 10 1/2' to 12'. So many choices so little time.:)

Was up to the river this weekend for some early action , the weather was very fall like cool and rain each day the water temps were in the upper 60's . Had 5- 6 fish on and landed 1 nice Atlantic of about 7-8lbs was using up my old tippet from last year and it was very brittle . I hooked up with kings, cohos and atlantics so there is a good mix of fish in the river and getting a round was not bad with the light early crowd . It's almost salmon and steelhead season folks so get your gear together and fill those empty fly boxes !!:)

Thanks for the report. Nice fish. Seems like the atlantics are making a comeback.

All those top notch spey flies in your box and do I detect an Estaz egg in that salmon's mouth?

Thank you Jeff was swinging the red estaz for cohos and this atlantic picked it up was shocked to say the least. The best action was early morning but it was overcast and you could see the fish moving through out the day.:)

Talked to some reliable sources last night and a big push of fish came through yesterday . He said the fishing was excellent with many hook ups with nice clean fish. The weather looks conducive to great Salmon River fishing with overcast sky's some drizzle and cooler temps for the balance of the week.:)

I think ill save them for the steelies. The salmon dont excite me much. I need the brutal cold, haha. Im sure ill cya up there!

You guys are all late! The season has already begun and I have already boated probably my only salmon for the year. Haha. I wont be home until Christmas, so you guys better post lots of fish porn for me to oogle at. Sharks only mean one thing, steelhead season is right around the corner. I know a few chromers have already come in, but the water is still quite warm and not to their liking.

CT nice to see you back! We'll try to get some good reports up for you to keep you going till you get home.
Hit the river yesterday started a round Ellis Cove hooked up in the morning at day break on the second cast . The rest of the day was much of the same a steady pick of fish through out. Landed a couple of coho a king and had others on but lost them. I ended up fishing from Altmar to 2a and had fish at most spots . The crowds were thin with the exception of the Trestle Pool which is always a mad house. There is a good number of fish in the river to include kings, coho some steel and a few browns it,s only going to get better from here on. Sorry for no pictures as I forgot to bring my camera.:)

I talked to the gang back home, and they said that action at the mouth of the river was slow, as was the fishing in the river. Only one decent push so far. Luckily I got a small piece of that when they first started running. More water and cooler nights would be nice. Some chrome was caught down low this weekend, but it's way too early for them. Water temps were in the low 60's.

Is it bad when you're 700 miles away and still check the water gauge and weather reports for Pulaski? I think that just means I have issues that only a bent rod can fix.

Any of you two handed guys have reccomendations for a decent spey setup that I will be able to use on the SR as well as out west in Washington state when I move there next year? I know, my life sucks. Going to have to just deal with catching big steelhead, it'll be tough, but I may be able to manage.
