Rising Rainbow

lightenup

A fan of Boobery
I went to a spot today..to check out what was there in the clear low water....
This is what I found, I let it be, as I had to go to work, but there was another guy there watching this nice fish rise sporadically to bugs in the film.....I bet he caught it....Please click on the pictures.......I took them with my phone from about twenty feet away, excuse the quality.....please..

This fish must have been at least 3 pounds.....I would guess in the 16" to 17" range, and fat!!! Large pectoral
fins and very clean...Nice fish, not wild, but a nice Kamloops......it'll give a great fight..

I will find out Monday!! A pleasure to observe this fish in it's natural state, and completely comfortable....

Wish I could of joined you today.

How'd you do? Any pictures? Curious to see how low the water is.

I got the skunk...I saw the big bow, but he got spooked by a guy fishing for it...I fished dries only, probably not a good idea today, a few risers to tiny, tiny and tiny..but I remained stubborn and fishless........The water is sooooooooooo low, that I will not being going back until we get some rain...bummer.......Guys lining the meat hole like it is the only hole in NJ.....

The fish were spooked very easily. I spooked one that was rising fish while tying on a tippet up on the path, I dropped the spool it rolled down to the river when I went to get the spool the fish bolted. I was down to 8x and had to put sinking compound (mud) on the tippet to hide that, and size 28 and still i had trouble with fish refusals. I agree it is too low and clear. I had one take between the meat hole and the Califon PL. The fish that I had the take on, 2 drifts over him and he was down and I was in a position where only the tippet was over him I was using a 12 foot leader so the line was never near him . I sat for 15 minutes waiting for him to become comfortable again. I stung him. What am I going to hold with a 28? I was happy I got him to take it. That is all I wanted anyway.

Fish the faster water in the KLG right now and you'll do better than the slow pools getting pounded like the Meat Hole. Our guides have done well with clients down there in spite of these ridiculously low flows. I've been taking my public water trips to the Musky to get at least the 80 cfs flows and where the fishing has held up well so far.

And pray for rain!

Tom....I had one take also..on a size 22 soft hackle fished dry.......I drifted over him probably 20 times...14 ft leader down to 6x....I dont know what was different the twentieth drift...but I stung him also..left with the fly in a tree after the hook popped out.....

Rusty..it's fun trying to catch those spooky wary trout.......

I know a spot in Nj which hasn't been effected much at all by the lack of rain. Large fish are there for the taking but at this time of year streamers work best. Fish can get quite large...significantly larger those in the SBR. Some of you may know my spot. Others have yet to discover it. Hehe. Let me know if you know the location. I'll PM you if your correct.

I fished the Rockaway Creek Friday & found it had strong flow. I also noticed, same afternoon, that the Neshanic River had barely a trickle of flow. Does anyone have any clue(s) to the reason of the comparison? I don't know. I guess it's because the Rockaway has some real good springs feeding it. Crystal clear water that flows out of some pretty good sized hills. Only had half hour. Two chubs, two red finned shiners caught on my #16 beadhead. Then I lost a 7 inch brown.

I go by Rockaway Creek daily...It is but a trickle of its former self right now....unless it's another Rockaway creek....

All our trout streams remain horrifically low right now. We need a lot of rain over several days and then that again two or three more times over the next few weeks. Just not all at once like we had a few years ago when we got 6"+ followed by Hurricane Irene, Tropical Storm Lee, and a 4th rain storm a week after that.

I really wouldn't know as well as you do, since I don't pass it by very often at all, but it sure was flowing a lot stronger than the Neshanic River. If you were to go look at the Neshanic River as it flows under 514 near Neshanic Station, then compare that to the flow of Rockaway Creek between Route 22 and I-78 on Rockaway Creek Road, you would have to agree, unless we live in separate universes, which I'm convinced we don't. When I say "strong flow" I mean relative to what I saw of NR. It's interesting. Do springs make that difference?

I mean, I agree: we haven't had much rain; streams are low. If I thundered out what I meant, all it is, is that Neshanic River really is almost a trickle at that bridge, and Rockaway is, in fact, not a trickle. I readily agree it must be low. I don't suppose it is entirely spring fed. It is rain fed like most streams, unless you're in England, I guess.

That was a very nice respite in the afternoon fishing the Rockaway Creek on Friday, and I sure could have used the same before I wrote the preceding post.

Things MUST be bad... Montague, NJ has been below the 1750cfs target for over two days,,,
