Pikes

Hit the river last evening for about an hour and landed three small pikes and a halfway decent one of about twenty-eight inches. I haven't been out much this summer due to the heat, but most of the fish have been on the smallish side.

Very nice! But unless you did it on the Russian Tiaga in a 6 wheel drive personnel mover, it doesn't count. That said, nice pikes.

Hit the great meadows on the Passaic last week, finally got a few on the fly, now on to passaic carp on the fly. Any tips ?

When the river got real low I transitioned over to fishing gear. I have been out almost every evening for the last two weeks or so and observed only a few carp basking in the deeper pools and wood piles. That is not very conducive for carp on a fly. Now the real revelation came when we got the recent rain and the river came up, covering what was once bare ground during the low water period. Those areas were now full of large feeding carp, tailing on those flats which could be sight fly fished.

Your reports are perhaps the best thing about this site at this point.

Carp water is often very difficult to fish, low water conditions or not.

Even wide open ponds that hold carp are often filled with old bicycles and even rusted out cars.

I once thought I had a record carp, but instead it was a shopping cart that put up a hell of a fight. The wheels on the cart would snag on debris every few turns of the reel - just like I always imagined an epic carp battle. (I have never caught one actually, just chubs and shopping carts.)

Even tho it wasn’t a fish, that perhaps was a highlight of my fishing career, and I actually ended up landing the cart…
