Orvis Return Policy

JasonM

Trout Hunter
I just read this on another site and thought that I would mention it here. I believe a lot of people have been buying orvis waders with the assumption that they will replace them if they have any problems. Orvis seems to have realized that a lot of people are taking advantage of the system and are now changing the policy. This is taken from an Orvis dealer in State College, PA.

Gentlemen:
Here is the official ORVIS wader guarantee policy:
1) Waders purchased prior to 1 January 2001 are out of warranty.

2)Waders purchased between 1 January 2001 and 1 January 2002 carry a 4 year, prorated warranty. The customer is entitled to 25% of the original purchase price of their old waders against the price of a new pair.

3) Waders purchased between 1 January 2002 and 1 January 2003 carry the 4 year, prorated warranty. Customers are entitled to 50% of the original purchase price on a new pair of waders.

4) Waders purchased between 1 January 2003 and 15 November 2003 had no specific warranty and fall under the "100% satisfaction, you must be satisfied " guarantee. Orvis will attempt to patch these waders, free of charge. IF they cannot be patched, they will be replaced. The option is up to ORVIS.

5) Wdaers purchased after 15 November 2003 fall under the following warranty:

"If your waders fail due to a manufacturing or materials defect, Orvis will repair or replace them at our (Orvis's--my addition, Steve) discretion, free of charge. This guarantee does not cover abuse, improper care, accidents, or the normal breakdown of materials over time. All defective or damaged waders should be returned to Orvis for evaluation, or call Orvis direct at 800-548-9548".

orvis

They continue to be a good company to deal with as far as my experience is concerned. I think with any company, if you deal with them fairly and honestly they will make things right. If they want to continue to have a large market share of the fishing industry they have to put the customer first. If you have a problem with their retail store just call the company. I've never had a problem with a retail store or the company. My wader failure was due to a manufacturing defect and the Pro-Guides had about 1 year of use. No problem on the return and I got an updated version of the Pro-Guide and I think they're awesome.

Orvis makes a lot of good stuff, but I would steer clear of their waders. Hodgemans aren't any better. Both are Chinese manufactured goods.

If you want real waders with a real lifetime warranty, I would recommend you buy Simms.

Ive always thought that was the policy for waders. I dont think its anything new.

When I win a lottery, then I can buy Simms! ;)

Simms are cheaper than you may think, and worth the initial investment. Say you buy a pair of Hodgemans lite breathable waders for $100 bucks.

A year after you buy them, they start to leak big time (like mine did). Guess what, 1yr warranty is over, so now you buy another pair - maybe the next pair up the product line, for $150. A year later, they start to leak...

Guess what? In two years, you just wasted what a pair of Simms would have cost you in the first place. Now, you have to buy yet another set of waders so you will wind up spending even more...

The old cliche is true, especially with waders; you get what you pay for!

Oh, and I should also add that you will have a lot more fun fishing with a $300 set of waders and a $100 fly rod than you will wearing $100 waders using a $300 rod. Especially in the winter when those cheapo waders leak and you get wet, and then you're cold shivering, and miserable, risking hypothermia for the sake of saving a few bucks.

L.L. Bean ...had my breathables(3 years old) leak... brought them back they gave me an new updated pair no problem...

Scott, I agree a 100%. I spent #00.00 and time on Hodgeman's in less than 1/2 a season(6 pairs that leaked) I've alway's used Simms but figure I could get away with something cheaper in the waist highs. I was wrong. BTW, If your interested in waist highs and I wear them 90% of the time you can get Simms for around $ 200.00 as they have been discontinued.

Jason, I think that has always been Orvis's policy.

I was under the assumption that is was not their standard policy. I noticed on quite a few boards that people were buying the clearwater or silver label waders and replacing them for free about once a season.

waders

I've seen a lot of posts about Orvis waders. Buy them, use them trade them in on new ones just like that. I don't want to pay more for a rod because some doof slams trunks on three of them and I don't want to spend a fortune on waders because Orvis routinely gives new one away. If a seam opens I want new ones or a good prorated deal but if I scramble down that steep bank below Fish's Eddy and puncture them that's on me.

Jason, I think both ideas are right. I think that is their policy but different people at Orvis handle it differently as in giving people new waders even after the first year.

Anyone ever try a cheap bicycle tire repair kit on your waders? If you don't want ugly patches on the outside, patchem on the inside.
