New to Fly Fishing

Hello everyone, i'm new to fly fishing and i was wondering if anyone can suggest me a stream where i can start practicing. i live in Brooklyn, and it would be nice to find a stream about an hour away.

Thank you for all the advice and for your time.

Welcome zarkhd. Several years ago I would have suggested the Connetquot river in Long Island, as it had many cooperative fish for a beginner. I haven't heard any fishing reports since the hatchery got closed down due to the IPN virus that the fish were carrying. I believe that you could still fish this stream, but it might no longer be worth the $20 they charge for 4 hours of fishing.

I would look into the waters of the Croton watershed. They're roughly a 1 hour ride from NYC, and some can be reached by the Metro North line. I believe that the East Branch of the Croton river is open through the winter. You do however need a special free permit to fish this watershed in addition to your NY state license. Just web search Croton watershed fishing, and you should find some links for ways to obtain the permit.

Good luck to you.

If you have not done much or any fly fishing I would suggest starting out in a pond or somewhere there is no obstructions around to get caught up in. Catch a few sunnies and then move to trout and finally graduate to stripers. And you are not too far from some amazing striper fishing. My sister lives in port washington and I go up there and fish within 45 minutes for stripers and its a great time.

thanks all for your replies... i appreciate the help, i will start heading out to the Croton in a few weekends. if anyone want's to join me i'm more then glad to offer you a ride :)

Check out Tom Gilmore's book: Fly Fishing the Big Apple. It lists trout waters within a 2 hour ride of NY City in NY, NJ and PA. It will open up limitless streams and larger rivers for you to explore. Then there are ponds, lakes, bays, and the ocean all at your beckoned call and all nearby. Good luck!

Zark,

Run fast from flyfishing, it becomes an absolte addiction. (Welcome to the sport, it's always a good time). Your best bet is finding a place where there isn't a great deal of overhanging branches, and snags to lose every single one of your flies within 5 minutes. The EB of the Croton is a fun little river, and it is open all year round, but it actually might not be your best bet because of all of the overhanging branches and tangles. (besides it's been very crowded lately on weekends). When a certain major flyfishing retailer which will remain nameless on thi little ponds,s website conducts their intro to flyfishing classes, they take their students to a pond with no over hanging branches. You target pan fish, and bass because they are so much more forgiving when you first begin. I would recomend finding some little ponds and practicing your casting before you try a Small brach choked stream like the EB. If you do decide to try the EB, feel free to PM me and I'll let you know how it's fishing, and give you a hint or two about where on the river to try first.

I'm in Staten Island. If you can get here I can take you to a pond and show you some basics.

I'll second the Tom Gilmore book.

Very informative and he hooks you up with driving directions.

Don't get much easier.

Enjoy.

I've been fly fishing since I was a kid, but I'm just starting to get back into it. I also have a car and am down to start exploring in a big way, so let me know if you wanna tag along some time. I'm trying to blog all my trips so you should check back in a few weeks and I'll hopefully have some more posts about easy access streams near BK. Good luck!

Skunked. I'm Fishing for Trout in NYC.
