New Fly Rod

in the market for a new fly rod. want to get a fast action 5wt. for use on bigger water. visited a shop and got to talking. ended up casting a thomas & thomas horizon II i believe. anyone have some input on this rod, or the company....ie warranty coverage, etc. this rod cast beautifully and i am planning on picking it up. just curious as to others experience with them, etc

I love T&T fly rods but you have to purchase what you like and don't listen to anyone else. If it makes you feel good, if you like the way it cast then go for it!

I've dealt with the company for over 20 years and never had any problems. They are the nicest people in the world.
As far as warranty, I don't buy rods based on warranty.

i thought the rod loaded nicely. it also was light in hand and cast beautifully as stated. also, like you stated, i need to like the feel and the rod.

i wouldnt make or not make a purchase on warranty alone, i was just curious, as i have broken a rod tip before.

T&T builds some beautiful rods for certain, but they have had a rough patch lately and may or may not survive for the long term. If I'm spending huge bucks on a rod like that, a warranty does matter to me. But then I don't make the big bucks. Others can afford to toss out a $700 rod with a broken tip but I cannot. Just my two cents...

With all due respect, if your dropping alot of cash on a fly rod and don't take warranty issues into consideration, you're acting foolishly.

As I have stated in other posts, I've been lucky to not have to claim more than one warranty issue with way too many rods I own, however, my 8/9 Beulah switch tip just broke on me. I spent $400 on the rod & am glad it was covered because I will have the tip replaced by weeks end.

I would never spend over $200 on a rod that wasn't backed with some form of replacment insurance, even if there is a fee.

If you buy this T&T, fall in love with it and it breaks on you, there will be a tear in your beer. :bang: I would hold off until they can at least answer their phones and emails.

If it were my money, I'd cast a Z, see how that feels. They are cannons by the way, and Sage will probably be around for a while.

When I went looking for a 5-6 wt for bigger waters I ended up with a Winston 9' 6wt. It was between that and the T&T Horizon. Try as many as you can. I think there both comparable rods with great warranties so pick what like. I do however highly recommend a 6wt. Personally I like 2, 4, and 6wt for most all trout fishing. The 5, to me, is compromise. Not a 4 and not 6. 7 would be too much.

well, currently i own a 8'6 4wt orvis tls power matrix, which was replaced once for a door slam tip break for $25. i also own a 7'9 5wt orvis far & fine, which was passed down from my father. there is another 8'6 4wt orvis rod, which is on the slow side, but is a good nymph rod. i originally bought a cheaper orvis 9' 6wt for bigger waters, but the rod is too slow for my liking. it can handle heavier flies, but the action inhibits my casting style. that is were the interest in finding a fast action 9' rod came into play. originally i was looking for a 6wt rod.-----in test casting a loop and the T&T on tuesday i got stuck. in my opinion, the loop 5wt was much like my orvis 4wt, so i didnt see a need to go that route. the T&T 5wt was stronger than my orvis 6wt and much faster. maybe even along the lines of an extra fast rod. i test casted a 5wt line and saw i was even able to up the line weight easily. now i didnt cast any other rods that day, but plan on testing a few more before jumping into that range. anyways, i guess after being bombarded with warranty information and such i thought i would just explain the situation a little more.

You should try as many rods as you can.

Here are w few more rods to consider if you are looking for fast action.

Orvis Helios/Hydros tip-flex
Sage z-axis

OR drumroll..................

The real cannon - super freakin' fast, super freaking light

Sage TCX 590-4
The TCX rods are the freaking bomb!!!! I own 2 so far. Try one, you won't regret it.

You can have one custom built for under $600

i am all for trying as many as possible. those were the two i had time to try on tuesday, had some other things that were more important to do that day. i was told price is not an issue as its a birthday gift from my fiance. custom built is always a nice option, but wouldnt really know where to begin looking if i wanted to head that route. also, i dont want to break the bank on her, as money today is never free flowing. i wanted to look into some sage rods as well as the gloomis upper end rods. wont be able to test out those top end orvis rods until i am up at the manchester store in late may, as i take a annual trip upstate. my journey will continue i suppose.
