Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

Need some help

How's everyone doing. I go to school at Villanova and was looking to do some fly fishing in the area. I'm not looking to spot burn but if anyone can point me to a couple of rivers or streams within the area I would appreciate it. Don't need to be a lot of fish, but looking to get out more than when I am just on breaks in NJ.

From now until opening day you'll have to stick to the WTS or other trout production streams that aren't stocked. There are many documents you can find on google that list basically every trout production stream in NJ, as well as the species they support. You also have the TCAs which stay open during preseason. Stocking started today, and the TCAs usually get stocked first. You could hit Point Mountain on the Musky or the Pequest TCA right near the hatchery. These places tend to be crowded during the preseason though as they're the only stocked waters that are open. You could also give the Lehigh Valley a shot.

but if you're at Villanova you might want to fish in PA. Ridley Creek State park used to have a fly only stretch that was OK. You also have something out at Valley Forge. I believe the Brandywine goes through the park and is trout water. Try some Urban fishing: The Schuykil (SP?) must have some monsters. That's all I know relatively close to 'nova.

I just presented to the local Delco Manning TU chapter and that is their home waters. They tell me it fishes well and they are wanting to get involved in removal of a dam in that area if they can convince the owner. It was publicly owned as I recall.

According to PFBC maps, you have two stocked creeks within 10 minutes of school. The first is Ithan Creek, about 5 minutes west and another 5 minutes west you have Little Darby Creek. I have never fished them, but since they are so close to school, you should give them a look.

A good book I recently picked up is:

Trout Streams of Pennsylvania: An Angler's Guide, Third Edition by Dwight Landis

Breaks down the whole state of PA by region and then disects each region - tells you where special reg areas are and what quality of fish inhabit (including maps). I think I picked it up for $25 on amazon but later saw it for $20 on ebay. (I know that's a case of beer...but it's definitely helping me plan an upcoming trip and will definitely help as I start to explore PA more).

The stream in Valley Forge Park is Valley Creek, and it is a limestoner with wild browns. Like Spring Ck, it was polluted so stocking stopped and the wild browns took off. It can get crowded (like Saucon, Little Lehigh and other more urban trout streams), but the locals love it and there is an active Valley Forge TU Chapter.

I've fished the Little Darby Creek a year or so ago (I think?). I was only there for an hour and a half and it was the end of spring. I caught one and had a few other takes that I missed. Didn't seem like a bad place.

Thanks for all the help. Like I said, I've done all my fishing in NJ and have not explored PA around my school at all. Going to try those Little Darby and Ithan in a couple weeks. Good luck to everyone

Watch out for anything in PA with "Darby"" in the name. It's on old native word for dumb as shit. Take it from a Jersey boy who has spent way too much time in Lower Delaware Valley.

I'll second valley creek. Nice little stream with good sized wild browns. They are spooky and it can get technical, but there are some decent fish in there and they are great looking wild browns with very distinct markings.

I misread your post. Disregard what I said.

You could also just skip the fishing, plunk down at Teresa's and have all of their varieties of Trappist beers that they keep in stock.
