My Montana Trip

troutbum2live

Eventually the wrong fly will become the right one
Well, finally stopped being lazy and decided to write out a little something and share a few pics from my Montana trip.

First of all, I'd like to thank skipper3245, dcabarle and Future Fanatic for their help with info on my destination!

So the down low.

Me and my dad drove from upstate NY to Clinton, MT. Took 38ish hours, saw the country which was cool but a few side notes...Illinois, WTF is up with the open road tolling...I owe you $1.10, Wisconsin needs other attractions besides cheese and South Dakota...you win the award for fitting the most cheesy billboards in a state.

We arrived in Clinton late on Sunday afternoon, stopping in at The Rock Creek Mercantile for our licenses and info, they were an awesome bunch of people who made you feel at home in their shop. After, we drove down Rock Creek Rd. to find a place to camp, which was very easy. Rock Creek was awesome with every area we fished yielding great action and some really decent fish, as if the AWESOME scenery wasn't enough! We fished rock for a few days, then drove into Missoula to the Kingfisher fly shop, re-upped some materials and got some info on the Bitterroot. Headed down near the forks of the Bitterroot and did alright, landing many many cutts and a few bows and browns. Fished the rock one last day and moved on. All in all this portion of the trip was great, awesome scenery, not a lot of pressure and plenty of fish!

Next we moved on to Divide, MT for the Big Hole. Stayed at Divide Bridge Campground and checked in at the Great Divide fly shop. Again, what an awesome little shop with great help. Fished the Big Hole around Divide, The fishing was great with plenty of action on top but the pressure was very heavy! Apparently word had gotten out about The Big Hole fishing well, and you could tell. Although everybody we saw in a boat or on foot was very friendly (for the most part) it was still pretty brutal. Took a day and drove out near wisdom to check out the upper river, the scenery alone is worth the drive. Made it all the way to Jackson, and found smaller fish but much less people! One thing I observed while driving between Wise River and Wisdom was a man I can only describe as a "mega-douche" putting wire fencing across The Big Hole river...Stream Access Law battles continue I see.

Our next stop was Ennis, MT where we stopped into Madison River Fishing Company. These guys are really cool and really helpful, and the shop is well stocked. The Madison was beautiful, but the fishing was inconsistent. This wasn't that bad though, we saw way less people!

All in all, this trip was great and a big learning experience for me. Only being 20, I was pretty clueless on what to expect out in Big Sky country and now I know. Next time it'll be even better I'm sure.

Oh! And maybe I'll rent a car, folks from MT aren't real big on New Yorkers I see! I did try to explain The Adirondacks and such but...got alot of :finger:

Enjoy the pics!

YOU SNAGGER!!! Couldn't just harass fish in NY! Had to go out west and sore lip them too!!

On a side note, I am just bitter because I was unable to make the trip.:crap:

Maybe next year!! Then we can bring the boat, and some wire cutters as well if they are running fence across the river. Nice report. SNAGGER!

Awesome Pics! I was out there two years ago and fished Rock Creek along the same stretch (Stayed at the Blue Damsel Lodge further down on Rock Creek Road).

Rock Creek has got to contain the most slippery rocks of any water I have ever stepped in, beating the likes of Penns Creek among others. Did the shops up there hook you up with a fly called the purple haze? basically just a parachute adams with a purple body. I found that fly to be an absolute savior.

Looks like you may have just missed Clinton's famous testicle festival

CT...there'll be plenty more with a seat for you...snaggers have to stay together.

Rambler, I almost ate it so many times on the Rock I couldn't believe it...the Ausable should be cake now. And I did miss my chance at eating some bull's balls...darn. Don't they have anything else to do out there?!

Oh and the purple haze was some kind of fly...have you tried it out here?

I ran out of ISO's one time on the D but did have some purple haze from a previous trip to Montana. I Figured what the hell and put one on. It works here too. :)

Nice pictures, sounds like a hell of a trip. I wish I had the time to drive out there like you did. Awesome!

Fantastic report and pictures you got to see some great water and caught a bunch of fish!! You are right though even if you did not catch a fish it was well worth your time. Got to see some of the most beautiful scenery this country has to offer and do it with your dad even better!! Thank's for sharing your trip with us good stuff!!

When I was out there I was greeted with nice hatches of golden stones and pmd's. Crazy enough, I found the purple haze to be the most successful fly. In addition to Rock Creek, my dad and I floated the Clark Fork, Bitterroot and Monture Creek down into the Blackfoot. The fish on the Clark Fork were particularly crazy for the purple haze.

I will be forever indebted to the state of Montana, as it taught me more about the sport than I ever could have dreamed of. That being said, there's still too much more left to learn

Steelhead are like Rainbow Trout...

Then why is it for steelhead fishing colours such as purple, blue, black work very well for them... shouldn't we just connect the dots and say that they will do well from trout?

Those dark colours do work.

I love fishing golden stoneflies, especially dries when I catch it when the adults come back to the stream to lay eggs.

AK, I use a purple leech pattern late winter/early spring specifically for rainbows around the streams I fish. I catch other trout on it but the 'bows overwhelmingly respond the best to it. Ironically, when I first picked it up in a Catskill shop it didn't have a name but it looked good (I had never quite seen the type of material used) so I bought some and soon began calling it the purple haze leech.

Fish the Delaware, Montana isn't the place to learn.

funny thing about that. I wasn't planning on going out there for a "learning experience," however, for my trip out there I had only been fly fishing for about a year. I thought I was starting to figure it out, and was maybe even starting to get a little good at this whole fly fishing thing. It was not until I got out there however that I was put in my place, and shown how little I actually knew.

I think every fishing trip is a learning experience, be it the Delaware or Montana. For instance, 3 times I've learned that I can't catch a trout on the West Branch.:crap: BTW, I enjoyed your report, thanks for sharing it.

Great photos and it appears you had a good time for your first MT trip. Next time, if you want bigger trout, try the Big Horn at Fort Smith for a few days. Lots of 17" - 20" fish and very good nymphing opportunities.

I couldnt agree more about the area around Wisom, Montana. I floated the big hole and the beaverhead in the fall of 2000 and the scenery just blew me away. At night the number of stars in the sky was mind boggling. Shooting stars everywhere. I flew in late at night and drove a rental to Five Rivers Lodge. I stopped the car 3 times just to get out and stare at the stars. The fencing will be taken down within a day or two I would bet. Folks dont take kindly to having the stream blocked!!!
