Musky Dams

Damn, that's a lot of dams. You guys really expect me to earn my pay, don't you???:)

My new hobby is collecting dam cores (pieces of concrete "cored out" for analysis). I have 3 so far with # 4 on the way:D

They make great paperweights!

Hey, I happen to have a t-shirt with that exact thing on it!:D It's my 8 year old's favorite! Which reminds me that beaver trapping season ends Monday meaning we can tear out the dam at Lubber's Run and the Musky in Byram very soon :) any volunteers?

That photo was taken at a store front window in Victoria, BC.

DemolitionDog will be more than willing help.

He'll even bring you TMC 100 BL hooks.

Seber Dam gets notched tomorrow (Wed. 2/11) at 9 am. This will de-water the pond and allow us to do some survey work for the full removal required suddenly by DEP Dam Safety:mad:. We come back in two weeks for 2 - 3 days of work to complete removal and restoration of upstream pond. Plants go in the ground March or April, weather dependent. I'll post pix tomorrow night.

Is there significant resistance to the removal of the remaining dams?

We take each dam one at a time. Some like the YMCA dam on the upper SBR we've had zero resistance. The reason is that there are no homes nearby, so nobody "misses their pretty waterfall". There is also no mill on site that might be seen as historic. Lastly, the owners paid for the initial notching and study work and no public monies have been used for that dam.

For Seber, no public problems as the dam is a mess and the former swimming hole filled in long ago.

We had plenty of complaints from locals when we removed Gruendyk last year, but almost all have come forward to say they were wrong and they are now thrilled at the end result.:D

Finesville Dam is next in line and while we've heard some local opposition, when we held our public meeting last December 6th, there were exactly zero people speaking out in opposition although written comments could be submitted through Jan. 31st (I don't have results back yet on comments).

Other dam removal projects are still too far away to make public, so we aren't hearing more right now. Also, as we do more and more, the public becomes educated about the positive effects of removals and we get lesser problems (we hope - but that seems to be the case so far).

A couple of pix from today's notching of the Seber Grove Dam on the Musky. As dams go, this is the smallest we plan to remove. Sort of like practice:)

What was this dam used for? These little dams are so silly! It's not like a little pond can generate that much power of any kind. However, I fully support flooding tens of thousands of acres for the purpose of generating hydropower. Who needs beautiful canyons and valleys anyway. Plus, tailwater fishing is awesome.

... each dam one at a time Sounds like something Fred Munster would say... "Damn.. Damn.. Damn...."

...so nobody "misses their pretty waterfall".

UMmmm... I have my hand raised and no one has called upon me....

For Seber, no public problems as the dam is a mess and the former swimming hole filled in long ago.

A tear has just come to my eye... my favourite fishin.. swimming hole.. How I long for those days.... (where it that spotty anyway?)

We had plenty of complaints from locals when we removed Gruendyk last year, but almost all have been buried under the rubble.

Ah, the Geese whiz way of doin' things I get it.

come forward to say they were wrong and they are now thrilled at the end result. I just wonder if the Federal Prosecutor’s really believe that Malarkey?

(Darn, now I just think I got JamieP involved in this thread (No Irishman need to respond)).

Finesville Dam is next in line and while we've heard some local opposition, when we held their heads under water before our public meeting last December 6th, since then there were exactly zero people speaking out in opposition although written comments could be submitted through Jan. 31st (I don't have results back yet on comments).

I think it is proper at this time to thank me, Mr. Damn Removal En-Forcer (DREF).

Other dam removal projects are still too far away to make public, so we been using the DREF tactics and haven't heard more from anyone right now. Also, as we do more and more, the public becomes educated in near drownin the positive effects of removals and we get lesser problems (we hope - but that seems to be the case so far).

Again, I shall take the lion's share of the credit.

As always, UN-Dam It.

Brian, you've got a career built (and a sidekick apparently) in your standup routine :)

Look forward to the day when TU can adopt the Raritan (as Bill Cosby used to say...
riiiiiiiiiiiiight)

Didn't a little bird tell me that today ( 2/19 ) is the scheduled date for the Seber Dam demolition?:applaudit

Talked to Brian this morning, yes he is in the river taking pictures of the Backhoe ripping concrete from the riverbed.

He did promise photo's lets hold him to it. I had to work or I would have been there ass deep in the river, grinning from ear to ear.

I'll start a new thread shortly - just downloaded pix onto the computer. Still can't feel my toes:D Damn, that water's cold! We tore that old dam a new one today:):)

You know I was 7 years old in grade school when I discovered that my name wasn't JESUS CHRIST.

Up until till there if you wanted to speak to me (such as me mom would) it was Jesus Christ!

For an example;

Jesus Christ get down from that tree....

Jesus Christ wipe the mud from ye shoes....

Jesus Christ go into the parlor and leave me alone.....

...and I don't own an immigrants Cap myself.

As always, Jesus Christ himself.
