Locations near Paramus

A Polinger

Just finished a River Runs Through it!
I'm starting a new job up in Paramus and I'm looking for some places I can go after work. Any help on the matter would be great.

Thanks,

AP

I'm looking for a river for trout and a pond/lake where it would be easy to work with a first time caster.

I guess the closest, are the Saddle River and Ho-Ho-Kus brook, but near Paramus, trout will be strictly spring stockies.....

If you drive further north (upstream) the Saddle River becomes a WTS. but access is more limited.

South (downstream), in the Rochell Park area, there's a park, that would be easy on a beginner.... You might find some big carp down there, especially in the spring when they're spawning. There's more parkland north of Route 17, but I'm not familiar with how "beginner friendly" it is.

Up Route 17 into New York you can fish the Ramapo River (trout) and several Lakes in Sterling Forest (bass, pickerel, panfish)

Depending on what time you get off of work (daylight is dwindling now) you can make a decision from one of these places below. These are your closest worthwhile options.

Ramapo river might be worthwhile after fall stocking. A small section of saddle river holds wild trout and is hardly fished, from my understanding access can be an issue, and the fishing is tough.

Also there is the wanaque river, there is a wts portion and there is a stocked meat hunters paradise portion. A river with more space an opportunity would be pequannock. Pequannock has a little bit of everything (wild, holdover, stocked).

Saddle river is a stones throw away from paramus, wanaque river and ramapo river are both about about 20 mins away, and pequannock is 30 minutes away.

If you are looking for something to do that's close I vote saddle river. I have never fished the wts designated section but i have caught wild trout below there. Outside of trout there are a few bass/sunfish ponds/lakes around in the area.

I should add that I have caught wild trout in the now wild trout designated area of the fishery in past years during spring stocking season. I could of been mistaken, but I believe they were 3 - 5 inch wild trout. Another angler who fishes the area much more than me said the same thing.

NON-WILD*

More specifically I've caught them in a 1 mile stretch of a Ridgewood Access area, in spring/early summer months.

Being a beginner myself I recommend the Ramapo it is the widest in the area. and easy to get to providing you are commuting north of Paramus. It was still pretty high last week so i just keep the fly rod in the car and took out the bait caster. I picked out a smallmouth on a black worm just a hour after work.
