klg advice

genzod

always learning
im a new fly fisher, was there at the klg twice without much luck, any advice on approach to fishing this stream???what flys ,cast, what retrieve, times to go,ect, thanx for helping me friends, jeff

This time of the year you have to fish early in the morning or late in the evening. High sticking is the way to go for the most part in the gorge. As for flies it changes through out the year but pheasnat tail, hares ear, and caddis, are some flies the trout will take year round but they can get fussy and keyed in on some thing particular EX: TRICOS in the AM

Id like to add to the question if I may. would a 9ft 6wt be overkill for the gorge? I know by more gear is inevitable but Im trying to avoid death by mad wife.

It is on the heavy side for NJ trout waters, but it is not at all ridiculous. I often fish a 5 weight in NJ and most fish 4s or 5s. That bigger 6 will allow you to easily fish tandem nymph rigs and large streamers with ease.

I agree with Rusty that a 6 would be a good streamer rod. I use a medium action 5 wt there and fish indicator rigs with two flies, and it is perfect for that, but a 6 is nice for streamers. I would go medium to fast action as streamers should be fished on heavy tippet and the rod will be better for other fishing such as carp or light steelhead.

My advice is to get the fastest 5 weight you can afford. The St Croix Legend Elite os a great rod for the $ and a few hundred cheaper than Sage, Scott, etc.
Then go and overwieght (or should I say weight the rod corrcetly according to grain size) with a 6 weight line. That way you get both ends of the spectrum. The ability to throw far with more more control up close.
I am a huge believer in Air Flo lines btw.

I would also add that if you want to throw a dry fly, a BWO loop or stiff wing 16-18, gives the most consistent results (for me anyway) spring threw fall.

I used to fish KLG with my 7'9" 3wt and had lots of fun (& success) during "normal" water conditions. Also, do not forget, under any circumstances, to add a RS2 as a dropper.

Hello Jeff I'm far from an expert on the KLG but having fished there several times I may be able to help you out. First if you fished the stream when it was low and clear stealth is a problem I see with alot of people out there. When you are fishing clear water conditions you must be very careful in your approach to the water you want to fish. Take note of which direction the sun is hitting you if your shadow is falling on the water chances are you are spooking the fish. Another thing I see is people trudging right through the holding water only to scare every fish into hiding. I will run into people later that said they didn't catch a thing and I know why because I watched them do this. Some streams I fish you have to approach on your hands and knees or crouching other wise the fish will see you. They can also sence your presence through vibration ie; braking sticks or kicking around rocks while walking close to the stream. Also they know you are there if you just jump right into the water sending waves through out the entire pool. So practice some stealth when you approach a piece of water you would like to fish. This alone increases your chances of catching a trout by 60%.

If you are looking for risers I simply walk the road and scan the pools for rises. Once I locate some I look for a possition to cast to them from either up or down stream or across if they are on the far bank. Which ever spot you choose you want to present the fly first to the fish. When you are in position watch for the fish to rise and when it does place your fly about a 2' above the rise form so it drifts right over the trouts head. When it gets near the area that you saw the trout rise watch your fly and the water under it as some times you will see the trout coming up for it. Let the fish take the fly then lift up on your rod to set the hook. Fly's you want to carry here are pretty basic for this time of year Caddis emergers and dry's 14-18 olive emergers and dry's size 18-26 slate drake emergers and dry's size 12-14 and adams parashutes 14-18 work well to.

If you are nymphing I like to start fishing in the tail out of a pool and work my way slowly to the top. Hitting each likely holding area several times. If you are sure there are fish present and you are not getting takes your fly is not close enough to the bottom so add a little more weight. Keep doing so until you lose a fly or just hang up on the bottom then adjust your weight accordingly to keep you in the zone. Nymphs to carry here are again pretty basic goldribbed hares ear 14-18 pheasent tails size 14-18 and any of the beadhead fly's in simular sizes such as the beadhead prince , pheasent tail and as Karel mentioned earlier don't be afraid to trail an RS2 about 12" or so off your nymph they love it in sizes 18-26 . Hope this helps you out!:)

I'd like to also add that you wade the least as possible. In most of the good holding areas in the KLG you dont even need to be up to your knee's or even in the water.
Too many times I've been there only to see someone walking right through an area that they should be throwing their fly into.

I would say try "euro nymphing" but this thread might self destruct and it would be very lengthy to explain...but google the phrase euro nymphing sometime.

Anyway the majority of the KLG is taylor made for nymph fishing. Almost all the water in the KLG holds fish. It's really wide open and super shallow.....it's gonna have fish in it...so fish it. Standard nymphs work well.. I use a #16 pheasant tail...maybe some flashback...maybe a bead...caddis emergers...small rs2's...if u throw a small #20 or so brown nymph it will easily catch fish. I also like some bigger isonychia nymph. But presentation being everything you can fish with dust bunnies on a hook and if it's presented well it'll do better than live bait presented poorly (that's a true story)

Good luck have fun..and your 9' 6 wt. if perfectly fine for nymph fishing...if u want to dry fly fish just use a longer leader...12' 5 or 6X...a #16 adams parachute and u cant go wrong.

Google Czech nymphing, that is a more common name for this style of fishing. Orvis also calls this "checked" indicator fishing so you can try that too...

My advice...........buy a fishing license, go there, break out your thermometer, take the water temp, get back in your car and go home.

Don't mind the 15 or 20 other anglers fishing, because they are not fishing....THEY ARE KILLING !!!

Fear not, the state will dump up to another 2000 fish in there this fall, so you can probably use a bare hook and catch fish.........
