Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

how many secrets can one man hold?

Catskill Mountain Man

Explore, and implore to explore
How many secret spots do you guys have so far, im not asking where or even the vacinity, but if you wanna tell go ahead i wouldnt unless you plan to have them ruined. I've complied and visited many spots this winter that i would love to head to this spring. All in all i say about 6, some from tips and some from exploring/hiking. How many do you have?

I know I know. It's that muddy looking one you pass on 17 with the fish skeleton sign. Or is that wallkill. Fishkill maybe.

i have no secrets.

I myself am stockpiling a collection of certain similar spots here in Northern NJ. Some in the Waywayona-Vernon/Lower NY area. Some of my scouting missions have had some good results. If you are open to the idea, I'm willing to trade on a quid pro quo basis, as long as things are agreed to be kept strictly among the parties directly involved (meaning just us). Willing to deal so I don't always have to drive 5 1/2 hours to the other secret places that I know. Just something I thought I would throw out there, otherwise our secrets stay with us, no net gain or lose. If you are game, shoot me a private message.

Catskill Man, Consider my proposal, and whether you take it or not, heed eelweir's words and absolutely positively do not post anything on the internet! It will get poached.

Catskill Mountain Boy,

You've obviously never had a secret spot burned or ruined by too many anglers "discovering" it. When that finally happens to you -- and it sounds like it will happen sooner rather than later by the content of your emails -- you will hopefully learn to keep your very young mouth closed. As you get older, you will find that solitude is the most precious commodity of all. It's something that should be jealously guarded -- not flaunted on the internet.

Boy: print out this email and save it. It will be valuable to you later in your life.

Read Catskills post again and then perhaps edit your post. Where did he ever state he recommends giving out secret spots. Actually the most precious commodity is spending time with your family and loved ones but hey whatever floats your boat

CMM edited his post, so I edited mine. It's between me and CMM -- and the 90 or so other folks who read this before it was edited.

I will be exploring like a madman this summer! I feel like a kid in a new candy store. I'm hoping in my lifetime I can live at least 5 years in every region of the country including Alaska just so I can explore the shit out of the whole country. And catch thousands of trout, all with varying accents and views on life in the USA. After NY, I'm pushing my girlfriend to consider Northern California, New Mexico, or West Virginia. Fishing new waters is so intimidating! You really have to apply every skill in many cases. Love it.

I've een scouting all winter like a madman looking for the less obvious spots. USGS maps, old reports, GPS, you name it. Out of all of my leads, I've uncovered just a few potential spots, and out of those, 1 or 2 places where virtually no one fishes or visits. This weekend I'll be heading out to a spot on the map that I've been dying to check out. Cross referenced it with some old reports, the USGS maps, and even Google earth. Will ride my MTN Bike as far as I can before I have to hike. Its a burly full suspension, so it can handle it.

Can't have too many. I would say 30 to 40 streams in an area would give a real solid selection to account for hatches, water levels, etc.

I would like to know what Job you have because clearly I made a bad career move and need a job that allows me to have 30 to 40 streams to fish:)

Job + young kids in all kinds of activities + wife = not enough time to fish all the secret spots I have in the memory bank. :dizzy:If I get to half of them this year I'll consider it a great year.

Unfortunately I am an engineering wage slave with a normal 9 hour work day, but my kids are grown so I am done with that phase of life. I know all the holes on my commute back and forth to work (Hackettstown to Florham Park). That is 15 streams - you figure them all out. When my kids were younger I knew all the spots around the schools, soccer fields, dance classes, shopping malls, etc. and most of my fishing took place during breaks in my normal running around. Major Lehigh Valley limestoners: 5 streams, with a bunch of trickles under the radar. Southern Warren Co streams another 15 or so and a half dozen Pocono streams 45 minutes or less away. Pretty soon 30 or 40 streams don't look like that big a number. I work in suburban NJ and go by more than a dozen trout streams every day - they are out there.

One bit of advice - start joining conservation/fishing/watershed organizations and volunteer and/or become an officer. The real info is spread among the guys who do the work.

Is it Spring yet?, I just woke up from my Winter hibernation...........Find secrets............keep secrets.....tell NO INTERNET BUDDY, cause they are not a true buddy........I fish alone because I trust myself and my very few trustable buddies........there just is not as much wide open spaces as there used to be.........just too many people who want to exploit your secrets..............F/T
