Homeless fishing report

Some homeless dudes are out here fishing the Hack.

They said that the game warden is giving out tickets to people who keep fish smaller than 36 inches.

I asked if you needed any sort of license and one of them started screaming at me... "You don't know nothin about fishin!"

And I suppose he was right.

Because he's been fishing the Hack for steppers for 8 years, and he ain't need no license. And he caught three steppers yesterday.

Lots of homeless dudes living down by the Hack.

The brush in that area has been cleared by brushfire.

The guy who caught 3 yesterday gives some to other homeless guys. He claims to have a cooler full of chicken and ribs.

I told him he should keep his fish.

And he said that there's only so much a man can eat....

The tidal waters of the Hack could offer serious striper fishing, flats style, right here in Jersey City.

These are tidal swamps. With tidal creeks.

Baitfish follow the current through tidal creeks.

Stripers and blues follow the bait.

Just ask a guy like Joe D, who knows his shit.

I'm telling you that the striper fishing will be monumental, if the Hack and Passaic are properly cleaned up.

This cleanup has huge economic potential.

Could you imagine wading... And sight fishing for striped bass, flats style, right here in Jersey City on the Hack!?!!!??

Pictures please!

Oliver, here is a video that tells the story of the wetlands restoration right here in Lincoln Park, Jersey City.

I have made a number of videos myself that I'll post, just to keep you guys aware of the project.

I am very excited about this!

Why?

Besides the fact that I live nearby....

The tidal marsh that has been used as landfill for over 100 years offer a wonderful opportunity for world class striper fishing.

Can you imagine fishing the incoming tide, as a tidal creek fills with water and then baitfish, followed by stripers and blues?

This is flats style fishing. It is possible right here in Jersey City, on the Hackensack and its restored tidal creeks.

This project has just incredible possibilities.

I fly fish for Stripers in the Raritan bay sometimes. Same sort of deal as you are talking about. The fish are there and they do move in with the tide and bait, but the water is too turbod for sight fishing. IF you have been following the news at all about the Mehenden trawlers in VA I think it is Omega Protien corp or something. They catch pretty much all the Bunker and really hurt the food chain up the entire East coast. They are one of the biggest tax payers in VA so they have had special rights allowing them to keep on fishing while Maryland boats can't take anywhere near the numbers. Anyway I think that the FEDs are impossing some regulations on Omega Protien and VA. They are obviously fighting it but the situation could get markedly better in the next few years.

but the government is useless, incompetent, incapable of doing anything positive for anyone anywhere ever.

I do love the idea of quality striper fishing in Jersey's swamps. We have harbor seals now so things must be getting better. Good thing fishing the incoming tide will be the way to go. low tide still stinks pretty bad down there.

Just curious...did you happen to read the article. Essentially they had no reliable data so they picked a number. According to the article the ruling still had to be approved by all member states and the reduction didn't seem to mean much when you look at what the company actually brings in. I do hope the striper fishing takes off though. Beetles makeshift cardboard home could be worth millions. He could open his own guide service and lodge right on the banks of the Hackensak. with daily flights from Newark and a quick train ride to the lodge he may corner the market...now what was it you were saying about governement incompetence:)

We should try to steer clear of politics here.

I am a conservationist, and am here only to share a message of conservation to folks here who are generally ignorant, really, of just about everything, including issues related to fishing.

Millions of dollars are being spent on a project that could result in a world class striper fishery in these tidal marshes.

I thought it said the restriction will limit the total amount caught by BOTH the reduction fishery (I think they mean reducing the fish to oil fishery so Omega) and the bait fishery to 170,800 tons. Then the article says that Omega alone caught 174,000 tons in 2011. So basically the total catch in 2011 was 174,000 tons for Omega plus whatever tonnage the other bait fisherman catch. The new total for both will be less than what Omega alone used to catch. That is how I read the article. However I am bit confused about the part whether or not the member states approved it. I glossed over that. I have read other articles about this in the past where basically VA has blocked regulation or found ways to exempt itself so past attempts have been useless. This attempt may also have been useless. I will see if I can find anything else.

As for Beetles guide service....The ads could read "Wanna catch and hug a striper, then book a float with the Beetle!" Then in small print "Absolutely no refunds or shooting coytoes in the face"

From the article it said the company derived most of their catch from another fleet which operated 20 boats. Still you have to ask how the government arrived at the necessary reduction. Dart board anyone!!!

That's easy Mac...Numbers are like whores once you have them you can do anything you want with them.

Lots of homeless dudes that don't know the difference between an English muffin and a hamburger bun, so if these bums have any money, the burger business will boom.

If they had any money or sense they would not be homeless. I saw one guy pull thispig fish_.jpg out of the Hack. I snapped the picture before he mumbled some comment about this being proof that Beetle molests fish. If the guy had any sense he would have kept that mutant and squeezed child support out the Beetle.:)

That's proof of evolution right there!
