I have never liked the idea of farm raised warmwater fish for the purpose of eating. A lot of fish crowded into warm, still, water does not sit well with my instincts of what I should consume. I have personally never put a piece of Tilapia in my mouth. I certainly DO eat plenty of farm raised shrimp though... This article makes it seem like I have been making a smart decision. Not with my shrimp eating though.:beingsick:

... yes JC the link works here...This is what I was speakin' of with the asian farms...stay far away from any food farmed in the far east ..it is very bad:puking-smiley::toilet-humor::sick::shit:

Tilapia is used in some countries to remove pathogens in the treatment of raw sewage and are very effective at it. Farmed fish in the US are strictly enforced to be raised in a healthy environment. Any fish that is raised in the US or Canada are as safe wild fish to consume. Buy your fish from a reputable market and make sure they are not imported.

If the idea of eating food that was once manure (poop) grosses you out, you may want to rethink most of what you eat... especially anything labeled as "organic".

However, if you're eating fish as a "healthy" food, farm raised tilapia may be a poor choice.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilapia#As_food said:
..... typical farm-raised tilapia (the least expensive and most popular source) have low levels of omega-3 fatty acids (the essential nutrient that is an important reason that dieticians recommend eating fish), and a relatively high proportion of omega-6. ......... The lower amounts of omega-3 and the higher ratios of omega-6 fats in US-farmed tilapia raised questions about the health benefits of consuming farmed tilapia fish. Some media reports even controversially suggested that farm-raised tilapia may be worse for the heart than eating bacon or a hamburger .....

I stopped eating tilapia after watching "Dirty Jobs" with Mike Rowe rounding up carp and tilapia raised in a sewer treatment plant. It was somewhere in the Southwest. Yuck.

The organic thing also gets me with "natural medicine". There are some potent and dangerous substances found in nature and natural is far from safe all the time. Stick to the stuff that is proven.

I never at Tilapia just because i didn't like the name, I don't eat orange ruffy either.

Or drink, for that matter. Sewer discharges run into rivers like the Musky, SBR, Raritan, etc. that then supply millions with their drinking water supplies.

I highly recommend Paul Greenburg's book Four Fish: the future of the last wild food for any of you interested in fish propagation for food. A NY Times best seller and great read.

Many years ago, I dabbled in wine making.
When I planted grapevines, I gave the young plants a head start by throwing a few handfulls of chicken manure under each one....

It occurred to me that I was turning chicken s*** into wine.

Did the manure effect the taste or bouquet of the vintage?

Oh, I totally understand I eat LOTS of food where the application on manure is standard practice. In my non-rational brain, I have no problem with that.

However, a plant absorbing nutrients through the soil which has had manure applied, and a fish eating poop directly are FAR apart on my gross-out scale.
