Fly fishing rivers near Lake George?

I have a guy's ski weekend later in January and we're staying at Bolton Landing at my buddy's house. Since the doc says no more skiing due to my blood thinners, I figured I could wet a line in the Schroon River. I see NY has some decent public access nearby, but I have to drill down to see if those sections are open after Nov. 31 or not. Also, anyone know if that river typically freezes over?

Other nearby rivers to try? I'm open to suggestions. I can't sit in the lodge while my buddies are all skiing, so I plan to fish somewhere. Small brookie streams also work if they are a better option(?).

Call Jones outfitters before you head up.They're in Lake placid but knowledgeable about the area.The problem I foresee is Rivers iced over.Its one of the coldest spots in the US in the winter. As you know the Ausable is in Lake placid but that is two hours away - Ice will be an issue.

Been going to Lake George for many years in the summer ,have yet to find a good trout river nearby.I Usually hire an outfitter and do the lake Trout thing with the boys. I also rent a boat for a week or so and we massacre the smallies. There are some streams nearby ,what you need to find out if there are any spring fed feeders, they'll have brookie's and wont freeze up where they start.

Good Luck

Dress like your going hunting in Saskatoon.

I think it is ice fishing for you. I have some tip ups and an auger you can use. Actually, the Lake Placid area has plenty of good streams ( West Branch Ausable for example) and trout ponds, but I expect them to be iced over. Lakes Placid and Mirror are closed to ice fishing, but there are other ponds to work (Connery Pond is nearby). BTW, NYS trout season ends Oct 15, so need to look at county regulations to see where ice fishing is allowed.

When I was young and stupid I skied down a Class IV rapids on the Sacandaga R. Even rapids were froze over, but had some openings which I avoided. That was the stupid part, if I fell through an opening or broke though I imagine things would get tough in a hurry.

Are you related to that CMM boob?:)

Sounds like Plan B. Get my best friend hammered drunk and convince him to let me rip around on his snowmobile while he and the boys are off skiing without me.

I'm not suggesting this as a destination, but if you have a little time to kill.

Bolton Landing is only four miles south of Northwest Bay Brook, a brook trout stream.

Lake George and tributaries upstream to first barrier impassable by fish
Trout All year Any size 5 Ice fishing permitted;
Use or possession of smelt prohibited
That's not a lot of water, the first "impassable barrier" isn't too far from the Lake. You could probably cover it in less than an hour.
