Fly Fishing Near Gore or Lake George

My parents live in the Lake George area and my girlfriend's parents have a house near there too. I live in Vermont and was wondering good rivers or streams to fly fish in that area. As a lttle kid growing up in Queensbury, I use to fish for brookies in Halfway brook.

You're not too far from both the Shroon and the Ausable, and theres about a million little brook trout streams in between. Get a good NY state atlas and start exploring, you'd be surprised what some of those little streams can turn up!

The Hudson flows past Gore, and the Indian is nearby
(up the big hill that GBS's truck didn't like).

Indian River

The Indian River ( discharge of Lake Abanake on Chain Lakes Road) is best from 4:30 pm till dark. Bring stimulators- yellow & orange, Ausable Wulff size 14 or less and a 4 weight is plenty. Check the USGS water flow website. It gives cfs, gauge height and temp. Water is released once per day around 10:00am so the rafters have a bubble of water to ride. The hatch is awesome. Get a good drift & you are in business. 18 minute ride from base of Gore mtn. Well worth the trip. The North Creek is also well stocked, close quarters and spooky fish if you are hard core fishing this one can be rewarding also.

Hello All,

I'm going up on Friday for 4 days and was going to bring up my 3wt. Can anyone help me out with finding some fish? I'll be in Lower Lake Gorge area near the Lake Gorge Fly Fishing school.

Thanks

Rick

Telemonkey,

Wow, Halfway Brook that brings back some memories of when I was a young buck sneaking onto Bay Meadows Golf Course or the Girl Scout Camp to catch a few trout. Sure there were plenty of access points on Quaker Road, etc. but it was no fun unless you were fishing a spot that was off limits...

I lived in Queensbury from 1973 through my bartending years and left the area back in 1988 but still have plenty of friends scattered throughout the area. What years did you live there?
