Fishing today

kindanewbie77

the sad old dog with no friends
So after my volunteering this morning I got to fish the Musky, which I have never done before. The stones were a dancin on the water but up until the time I left no one was interested in them. I managed to hook and fight one very healthy rainbow, but lost him and the grhe that had been a very productive fly in the last few days. Time to hit the bench. Came home to a very sick wife and a quiet house 'cause the baby was a sleepin. Had a little lunch, my daughter woke up, and I decided to take her out to a local spot. So here we are, Daddy with all his gear strapped on and Abby in her backpack on my backIMG_0010.jpg.

So we walk out to the spot, I spilt the bans where I was in an earlier thread, and start to fish from up stream of the hole that I had my eye on. I saw a few rises, but not a ton. Started out with a red copper john with a small hares ear dropper, no takers. Adjust depth on the indicator, no takers. See rises....change to dry flies....first one, nada...second one, third drift, and whammo this mutated sum bitch comes to handIMG_0006.jpg !

Here is another pic....IMG_0008.jpg Any thought on what may have happened to him?????

At any rate, the kid was dancin on my back like a female stonefly, so we called it a day, but not after her dad snapped a picture of the next generation of female flyfishersIMG_0016.jpg

Now you tell me how do you say no to that face when she says," Daddy take me fishing!!!"

HAHAHAHA
Thats a good one i didnt think of that You gotta get rusty out there and get those fish some help.Wait were those rocks they put in the musky today real or were they crack rocks if so we gots problems

I knew I should have paid more attention to the rocks you were placing in the river today!

Great to meet you this morning and sorry the 'bow got away. Damn, that's one butt ugly fish you caught there...but you outfished me. I didn't fish too long and only missed one take, but I saw one of the best stonefly hatches ever on the Musky today. Same thing you saw - nobody was interested in them except me...

That brown deserves to be on the cover of some magazine. He makes a good case for the need for cleaner water in NJ.

I caught a similar brown many years ago and believe the deformity most likely occurred from a hatchery mishap in the early stages of its life.

Got out today to do some fishing before the zoo starts. Nice day to be on the water with blue skies and warm sunshine. Went 2 for 4. The two I landed were chrome rainbows. Beautiful fish. Pics dont do justice. Lost two big fish earlier. Need to work on my hook setting skills. LOL. Caught one bow on a prince nymph. Switched to wets and caught the bigger bow on the swing. Crushed it. Enjoyed the water all to myself with some cigars in hand. What a day. Enjoy the pics. P.S Have some video that I want to share. Anyone know how to upload it? Thanks Good luck!!

Kindanewbie77,
Was out on the Musky and as the day ended I happened to look at the signs which read closed on March 17th. Thought it was the 23rd. Ooops. Whatever. I practice C&R all the time anyway. Arrest me. LOL I love the BFB. Let me know when you will be up next time and maybe we can meet. Good Fishing!!!

Tom

We may not need to arrest you......
You may have seen an old sign. The closing date in 2008 was March 17.

The 2009 signs may not all be up yet.
If you go again today, check to see if the sign indicates a year.

I was on the Musky yesterday, too. Didn't check the signs, but the digest says today is that last day, so we were all right.

The thing that I did notice was how LOW the water is right now. We fished down near Route 78 and usually this time of the year its knee deep or more where waded, and deeper in the holes. Yesterday, it was maybe at my shoe tops, and knne deep in the holes. Very clear, too.

We did seine a number areas and found tons of scuds, chimarra larvae, rhyacophila larvae (rockworms), sulphur nymphs and stoneflies. There were plenty of other nymphs, but fewer.

I guess I should have checked the year. Thanks for the heads up.

Matt,

You are spot on, It was low and clear. I happened to spook a few fish it was so low. Had to find the deeper water and when I did it usually had fish. I saw stones coming off myself but no fish rising. Tried some attractor patterns on top to no avail. Terrestrials as well. Nada. That would have made it even better. Have yet to catch my first fish on a dry. Been nymphing all winter.

Tom

I agree with he both of you guys, we are at water levels that should be seen around here in mid summer, not prior to the first spring stocking. TK there were stones up here in fairly consistent numbers on the lower section of the BFB, but no risers. The fly of the day was a black midge #22, or a black gnat in the same size. I REALLY hope we see some rain soon. We need it bad, and not just for my selfish fishing reasons!

I know that we're still five days away, and weathermen aren't famous for their accuracy, but they are calling for a pretty significant rainfall this coming Saturday.

Plus, with a volcano going off out in AK... Who knows what the ash do to the weather pattern out here.

2nd Year, POINTERS?

This will be my second year fly fishing, last year caught one smallmouth on the Paulinskill in Stillwater where I live. Fished BFB many times, hooked two never landed them. I would go to Stokes State Sport Shop and ask what they were hitting on but the guy who knew eveything was never around, unfortunetly. Fishing with my bro-inlaw who is also new, need some friendly guidance out there. Thanks.

Rob

Robyas,
CDog has a wealth of knowledge about the BFB. It is his home water. Im sure he wouldn't mind helping out. Good guy!! He paid me to say that. LOL. Only kidding!!! Anyway, I fish it when I can and might be able to provide you with some pointers as well. PM me next time you go up. Good luck

There you go TK, using my name in vain again.

Robyas, I just posted under the thread "new user" some info on the Big Flatbrook.

I think I should add, if you would like a guided fishing trip on the BFB, we have a guy here jcstikfish who is a great guide and knows the BFB well.

Wecome aboard,
Cdog

Thanks everyone! Will send some messages when i get a chance to go! Schedule is crazy with a job, running my own business on top of that, which means i work weekends, three kids and a hard working wife! But when i get two hours, i go!

thread jumping from my 'new user' thread to say thank you to Corndog and AKSkim for more info on the BFB. I have though about getting a can of bear spray. I never carried any in PA, where there are certainly plenty of bears, but there is also more land there for the bears to walk away. Is it overkill to carry it around northwest NJ? Or is it standard gear (not ready to carry a handgun while fly fishing)?

I've encountered many bears and am still here to talk about it. I wouldn't worry about them as much as the locals. Now there's a reason to carry a gun. :guns:
