Got out to a small stream yesterday to take advantage of the warm spell. Water levels were good, lots of tumble to this water, and I got a stream temp of 41 degrees. I really wanted my first trout of the year to be on a dry, but only a few dinks picked at it and didn't hook up. Got tired of passing up too much good nymph water, so the pink squirrel nymph went on the tippet, and the first trout of 2013 came to hand.
I'm hoping that a trout this small means it can only get better the rest of the year.
After several fish, it was back to the dry fly figuring I'm playing with house money at this point.

Dry fly fever is a powerful thing, and it took a long time to wise up and go back to nymphs, so I missed out on a lot of fish, but still had a fun day having a cooperative trout stream to myself and actually being comfortably warm in January as a bonus.
