Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

finally shook the skunk in the gorge...

I am haunted by waters
thanks to two sunfish at the end of the meat hole.... :finger:
ha ha ha, hooked a small trout that got off pretty quick.

How was the water? Is it still really low, or did the rain help?
the water looked great! moving pretty well, clear, not muddy. lot of leaves in the meat hole, pretty frustrating when you keep hooking them bringin line in for a cast.
the musky was dead at pt mountain, fished from the bridge upstream to the rapid area.
nada.
i may try the pequest next trip, i've really never fished it much there, pt mountain has been disappointing, i always at least get strikes there, but zilch. i should plan to meet a few of you up on the river one day...fishing alone is getting boring.

I was up there Sunday morning. The number of people almost made it look like opening day, I was pretty surprised. I got one rainbow around 9:30 but that was it and didn't see anyone else land a fish by the time I left around noon. Water level was low but not unusual for this time of year. You are right about the leaves being a pain, but that is something you have to deal with in the fall. It's not as much of a problem when nymphing but trying to streamer fish is a waste of time until they clear in a few weeks.

I fished pt mountain for about an hour sat around noon I got one nice holdover rainbow I fished the klg in the morning and got a few small bows and a brown. A friend and I were at pt mountain on Monday and got around six fish each. Saturday it seemed like project healing waters? Was at pt mountain hopefully they caught a few fish but it seemed a little tough. Keep at it mantis

Yes, that was a group of Project Healing Waters out of NY City that I sent there. Their leader fished the old Musky No-Kill fly only stretch 50 years ago and was going to take them there until I heard, reached out, and sent him downstream further. Remember that stretches like Point Mountain only got 2 small stockings in the spring and then the other week they only got 100 trout and some were as small as 3" - 7". If you're not catching the odd wild brown or brookie coming in from the trib upstream at Penwell, then you are relying mostly on holdover rainbows from last year with a few from this year.

Rusty, there's a tree across the beginning of the trail at the lower margin at PT Mountain...I don't know if any of the RVTU guys could chainsaw it up, prob take more time to start the saw then actually get it out of the way

I'll reach out to Hunterdon Parks. They don't want volunteers just running around with chainsaws without permission and insurance. Thanks for the heads up.

Actually Rusty, they do want volunteers. They just ask that if you bring your chainsaw that you wear a hockey mask.

when i saw that after not being there since June i was like... hhhhm. that;s new. that's a spot i have had much success in.

it's very common that they parody the chainsaw/hockey mask...
i wish the nhl would use those old school masks again, but they're restrictive.

I caught two today in the gorge.....I saw a trout as big as my thigh......it looked at my nymph several times, refusing it each time, but raising the heart rate enough to keep me interested...

I also saw this in a tree above the graveyard in Clinton by Spruce Run Dam.....

Reminds me of when we tried to tie the hot dog roll fly for behind the Orange Pit.

The fly in my picture is actually because when I was brand new on staff, Jeff Reardon who led our efforts to remove the 3 big dams on the Penobscot to save endangered Atlantic salmon in ME and who now leads Maine's brook trout initiative for TU's Eastern staff used to live in NJ and fish the Musky. He asked if the Orange Pit was still around and was I using french fry flies? So I tied up that one you see for a laugh and sent it to him. He said it lacked a red collar for ketchup, but that it should work anyway. There's always a critic!

Those trout behind the Orange Pit seemed to prefer people food over naturals.

I was just looking at the pictures of the Eagle again, and I realized why our founding fathers chose it instead of the Turkey...Not that the Turkey is an ugly or insignificant bird, just the grandeur and beauty of the Bald Eagle is fucking remarkable!!!!
