Favorite bug repellant

After getting bit up last weekend, I tossed the Skin-So-Soft bug juice and looking for a new one. What's your brand?

If you don't mind the Deet, Deep Woods Off seems to work the best. Cutter also makes a back country that has about the same amount of Deet and works about the same. Both have a lot of Deet and will melt your fly line.

I just started using repellents with Picaridin instead of Deet. It is safe for plastics but I don't believe it repels ticks. Supposed to work for biting flies, no-see-ums, mosquitoes, etc. I bought Cutter Advanced, but it's too early to tell how well it works.

There is another recent thread about this same subject. Do a search and you should be able to find it.

I don't use DEET repellants at all. I have actually had much better luck with Mountain Martha's Z'off (all-natural, smell's like strong pine pitch) that I used to pick up at Fran Better's shop each year on my annual trek up there. Matter of fact, last night I exited my truck at my fishing spot and some gnats immediately swarmed around my head. I grabbed my hat (which had last been treated with a just 2 squirts of Z'off last Friday) and put it on and they disappeared. Best stuff I've ever used, bar none.

I also purchased another DEET-free repellant while on my Upper Connecticut River(NH) trip. It was called White Mountains Insect Repellent I believe, and came recommended by the guide. If a NH guide swears by it, with all the black flies and mosquitoes they deal with each year I figure it must work. My Z'off is finally running out so I'll begin using more of the other stuff now.

BTW, the way I learned it years ago, is that Skin So Soft is not actually an insect repellent but rather it makes the skin so oily, smoth that the mosquitoes apparently have a very hard time staying on your skin long enough to bite. But it doesn't actually act as a repellent.

it's very hard to get in the US. you ingest it, and the more you ingest the further away the bugs stay...you can try applying it topically, but better results can be had from ingestion...

If you like solitude, this is the stuff. Stinks bad, women hate it but, so do the bugs! I think it has pennyroyal in it. Pretty toxic stuff. Read the label

I'm going to stop at Frans this weekend and try that other stuff. The NoSeeums are wicked on the Ausable at night. If it works, I'll be sold
