Fall Fly Swap, Last Call!

Caddis

wanna be fly fisher.
The following members have agreed to tie at least 1 fly so far:

. Jonboy
I am gonna tie sulpher comparaduns and trico spinners for this "shin-dig."
. AndyB. JasonM
I will be tieing a pheasant tail soft hackle.
. JoeT.
I will be tying a cdc sulphur(dorothea) emerger.
. Sqerl
I got a drake deer hair pattern that has caught almost everything!
. Yukon
I would like to tie a modified version of a bead head pheasant tail nymph (#14) that Urban Angler in NYC used to carry--but I might also include a quill bodied parachute Adams (#16)--my favorite dry fly.
. DennisC
I think I'm going to be tying size 16 (tmc) extended body caddis along with a comparadun that's to be determined.
. LongVanilla
I will do a "crackleback" pattern and maybe a Usual caddis if time permits.

Above are some quotes I took from some previous posts about what some of you offered to tie for the swap. As of now, everyone should tie at least 7 flies of 1 pattern. A few of you offered to tie more than 1 pattern. If anyone has second thoughts, or would like to change your pattern, please say so now. Otherwise, please send all flies to:

Dennis Cabarle
611 Larch Street
Roselle Park, NJ 07204

Please, no stalkers!

If anyone needs more time, please give us an approximate date. All flies will be sent out with 1 mailing.

I think everyone is good with Novemer 12th right now. I hope to hear from all of you soon.

Dennis I tied the sulphur emergers on scud hooks as well as Baetis comparaduns.Do we also send in the recipe with the flys or post them when were ready?thanks

P.S... What are your plans for this coming weekend? Andre left a message on NJTrout. Are you game? Anyone else?

hahahaha... maybe by then, I'll have the fly's I promised you!

I'm not sure where we'll be heading, It may be to NY. I know that's a bit of a stretch for you. I think DaveB lives down your way too... Maybe the two of you can hook up and we can all meet somewhere.

It looks good for me for the 12th re my pt nymphs, but no time for the Adam's parachutes (I am going away for a few days)--instead I will include some Red Quills and Hendricksons (classic catskill style) that I tied years ago to donate to my then-TU chapter (before I decided that they were unworthy of my efforts). If nothing else, they should be entertaining.

Glad to see you're definetely in. I'm sure your flies are better than anything I could tie. I've only been tying for about a year now (on and off)... It puts me to sleep. Sometimes when I get in the mood, I'll start tying a few and before I know it I have 15 flies!

I just hope you eventually get a chance to use some of the flies everyone else is tying. :)

Actually, I suspect that I will keep most of the flies as mementos of my first fly swap. And don't comment on quality until you have a chance to evaluate the product!

I'd like to say....
ARRRGGGGH

making my drakes were easy when they were a size 4.. they were big pretty attractors... I was even thinking of using a size 2 or so for a dobsonfly... but I figured I'd go to a smaller size for usability... These size 18's are a pain... but I must say they make a great emerger pattern!

ok... #18 is relatively small, but we all know there's smaller. In fact, Dennis has some small trico's.... here is one guy that tied the extended body drake as size #28!

http://www.danica.com/flytier/myles/myles.htm

My 7 flies are tied... they just need the smallest of epoxy drops to make sure my handtied whip finishes don't fall apart. Its tough to get the thread under the hackle when its tied around the post.

I'll get them in the mail and out to you dennis over the weekend.
I'll send the return postage as well so you're not incurring out of pocket expenses for the "shipping and handling"

Sqerl,

That's a great site, I use that one all the time. I think I actually have a link for it somewhere on this site. The flies you've referenced look terrific, and I'd probably be reluctant to ever get that quality that small (with the spinner he has of course). That paradrake looks terrific, but by looking at it, I would think it would have a hard time floating.

About his Trico... I don't think it looks like a trico, but I still have to compliment the tie. That fly looks more like the mahogany spinner type of fly. I'd really like to try out that 28 drake he's got! It looks pretty damned great however, I don't think it represents any type of mayfly at that size.

Fly's

Dennis:

My Fly's are being sent out to you today. Please let me know when you receive them.

Andy B

Flys

Dennis:

Package of fly's and patterns on thier way. Postman told me you should receive it in two to three days. Take care and thanks for being the mailer. This was fun.

Andy B

Thanks again Andy...

I can't wait to receive them. Joe T. also sent his out.

Just in case anyone is not aware, the 12th of the month is this coming Tuesday. Please finish up on your creations. So far, JoeT and Andy B have confirmed they've mailed their flies.

My caddis are finished... Actually, Last night I came up with an idea for something a little different, so I tied up some extended body caddis flies that I'm 110% positive will work great. So I scrapped the other caddis that I already tied. The new caddis I tied are tied on a size 20 Tiemco nymph hook.

Would everyone just confirm your status's? Thanks

status?? I trying not to catch whatever evil sickness has found its way into my house... the "cranky banshees" are killing me...

as for the flies, I'm looking to finish them up tonight and out the door on Saturday... if I have enough, I'll toss in some scuds I have laying around that I tied when I first got back into tying a few months back... no guarentees, but a scud is a scud! :D

A Joe T. Creation Sample!

Joe, I received your fly's today, and they look great! Is that CDC you use difficult to apply?

The body of this fly is actually more of a yellowish color than what is shown in the photograph. I'll fix it when I post everyone's fly's sometime next week.

The flies are done, but I may not get a chance to ship until Tuesday--I will send them priority mail so that you will get them quickly. I actually had a chance to get away for some fishing with the boys up in Stokes--the Big Flat is in gorgeous shape--lots of ice cold water, i actually got a reading of 42 degrees--i am not even sure that is possible at this time of the year--there may be something wrong with my stream thermometer. All we caught in NJ were tiny r-bows (don't ask with what) the biggest was my 91/2" monster--but we got some bigger browns in PA at the Big Bushkill (also in great shape water wise) my son Peter Samuel got a big fat 12" brownie. Anyway the flies are coming!

Dennis,
My flies went out in the mail this morning. I will post the tieing recipe on the website.

FLIES SHIPPED!

I got to feeling guilty so I made the trip to the post office and shipped priority mail today--you should receive flies by Tuesday the 12th. Let me know if they arrive ok. This was fun.

Joe T. suggested that I send along a photo, and I forgot--Will ship under separate cover via snail mail.

I sent 10 pt bead head nymphs and a dozen 12/14 lt hendrix and red quills (6 each). You can divvy them up however you like. Thanks again for your organizational efforts. I am looking forward to seeing the flies.

Dennis/Pete

Dennis, the CDC is easy to tie in,I will expalin once the flys are all in.Pete your thermometer is fine! The water temps cooled down big time the past few weeks. Most of the catskill rivers were in the low 40's as well in the am.The KLG was at 46 deg last week.Pete the picture of the fly was taken by Dennis when he got mine.Oh yeah Dennis I forgot can you use your De Barbing machine on my flies, and also see if you could stretch it from a size 16 to 17?thanks Joe.t

I finished my tricos up last night, unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to send them out today (a trip to the Saucon got in the way). But I will send them out on Monday. I've only been tying for 2 months.....so....we'll see what you guys think;)

I still haven't quite finished yet.. still got some minor fixin's to do... will do everything possible to have them shipped monday.

since I missed the postoffice on saturday, I spent a couple hours fishing near my house.... caught a ~32" pike definitely over 5 lbs that bent the hook on my spoon into a 90 degree angle. Sorry it wasn't on a flyrod, but it was on ultralight tackle and 4lb test line. One of the biggest fish of my life! too bad I forgot the camera this one time... oh well... I'm sure there will be more!

What kind of insect is that in the picture?I have never seen anything like that? Looks wild!! Mayfly.Man..

That would be a Sulpher (Dorethea) Emerger pattern, and I can attest to the fact that they are splendid fly's. They work like a charm just as other CDC Emerger patterns with the Z-Lon on the rear.

So far I've received Andy B.'s flies and Joe T.'s flies. Excellent ties guys!

yeah!!

Mine are done! I'll be running out to the post office on my lunch and get them in the mail to you... I'll post the recipe on the website.. parhaps a thread dedicated to the flies that were tied with links to their pictures and a recipe posted?

edit: ixnay on the mailay... today is Veteran's Day. Post Office is closed... I'll try mailing tomorrow :D

Happy Veteran's Day!!!

and THANK YOU to all our Vets!!!
