Catskill Mountain Man
Explore, and implore to explore
It's a sad day. A day when all anglers weep for such a wonderful stream and the hardship we will now face protecting.... you all from an APRIL FOOLS JOKE!!
On a more serious note if this happens I'll be extremely upset. We need to be vigilant and always wash and/or completely dry our gear before switching water bodies.
The neversink is surrounded by and drains into other famous catskill rivers that are known to be infected by didymo.
Long description short, there is not a lot of evidence that didymo destroys the ecosystem completely; but it's a fly fisherman's nightmare. Your fly (dry or wet) is constantly cloaked in the algea. Making fly fishing near impossible.
Help me keep my Neversink clean and if you are planning a multi day trip take 1 water body at a time (unless you do your research) and try to work the day down stream. I find this fits nicely into a conservationist schedule if you plan ahead and fish non didymo infected stretches/stream before you fish didymo infected stretches/streams.
Also if you start on the upper stretches of lets say.. The Beaverkill, in the morning you tend to catch more small hungry fish, you also tend to; move around, hone your skill, see the bug life. Then you work up to the big guys farther down stream.
For all of you new comers into this wonderful sport please take precautions and be aware of where you are.
Don't just blindly go to a new water body with out at least googling/asking/reading about if the water is infected. It's not that difficult.
