Just over a year ago, I saw some of you guys talking about catching at least one trout every month of the year. January 2014 I started out on my quest to do the same. By February 1, 2014 I had struck out. I decided to try again this year with low expectations.

First trip out in January I caught a decent stocked rainbow (only 1 fish all day and it fought like a wet sock but I had extended my challenge for a month - success in my eyes)

Went out this past Sunday as the weather suggested it would hit a balmy 38 degrees so I took the hour drive just hoping to find some open water. Crossed over the river at one point and saw the river flowing and I started to get excited. As I hiked down through the snow I noticed that were no footprints heading towards the river and I started to get more excited. After an hour and a half of nymphing up nothing at all I finally hooked into a fish. The fish then exploded and took me by surprise. It took me up the pool, down the pool, into the riffles and into the shallows. Each time it went to jump it created a wake behind it as it powered up through the water column and my heart would sink thinking this would be the jump that would break me off. It was THE best fight I’ve had with a trout to date (which surprised me as I assumed it would be more lethargic in the cold water) and had my heart pumping out of my chest. I remember thinking – “enjoy it…enjoy this fight..she’ll break you off soon…just enjoy the fight and enjoy your buddies teasing you about another one that got away later). After an extremely respectable fight I was able to land the rainbow which measured at 22” and is my biggest trout to date. I’m guessing the fish was a club stocked fish that made its way down stream (?) and it had a dorsal fin that was pretty f’d up…but she made my week and my challenge continues for one more month.

Mangled fins are a common side effect of large scale aquaculture. Next time, go to a more upscale supermarket and pick out a more pristine specimen. You have till March, so plenty of time.:)

Nice fish. Nice story. An atta boy is definitely in order.

I can get you one delivered....

Nice going there Tom! In my opinion, the February fish is usually the toughest one to get when you're trying to catch a trout each month of the year, so you've cleared that hurdle.

A few years ago, we had that warm mild winter and the LBS started hatching in late January that year and fish rose to them like spring mayflies. That was the only year ever I caught at least one trout in each month on a dry fly. I love the annual monthly challenge and usually try for it each year, but never expecting again a 12 month dry fly fish from NJ waters.

Great persistence - Nice to see someone getting out this time of year. As a rule I do not stand in cold water when the air is below 45F so i am barricaded indoors tying some different patterns. I may get to sections of the Little L where I can fish without wading now that I have off one weekday each week and can avoid the crowds. It has been a colder than normal winter so far so perhaps we will get an early Spring.

What patterns have you been tying up?

Yea I went back and forth several times deciding if I was actually going to leave the warm apartment to take a long drive to HOPEFULLY find open water, and if I was lucky enough to find open water I'd probably spend my time getting cold and skunked...but thankfully it worked out this time. Rod's away and vice is out until March

I used so few flies last season that I have been tying some different flies that were recommended including the the Romaine and Greenwell's Glory wet flies (I have been a big fan of the thoraxed soft-hackle no-wing wet fly for decades and gave up on the winged wets), also tied up a dozen different colored Mop flies, some McMurray ants, and replenished my copper head, GRHE, and caddis pupa nymphs. In addition to producing trout flies the way I want them, fly tying has made winters like this one easier to take.

That's a damn good fish for February. Even if it is a stocked mutant!

Come out here and visit me in the Fall. I will get you onto some pigs. You'll be shaking off the 20" fish so you can get your line back in the water in hopes of catching a 25" plus bow with a girth over 15".

Hahaha fly fishing in Alaska is on the bucket list...unfortunately I don't think I can swing it this year - but I definitely appreciate the invite - do you hunt out all out there?
