Rich:

I was tying up at the Williamsport, PA Susquahana Trout unlimited Trout Kick off fly fishing show and I was at a loss as for a pattern to tie. Well after ten minutes of Debating the Liberty, The Walker and The post all popped into my head and are fun ties. So next thing you know they went from vise to swap while demonstrating some wet fly techniques to the public. I thought you might of appreciated the Liberty and had you in mind when I tied it for the swap at the show. I'm very glad that you like it. I also think a lot of the people in the swap will like what I tied for them. I went with a basic like the Montreal and from there let my mind and creativity go wild. My most favorite fly I tied went to a close friend in Utah. I tied him up a Kineo. I was going to tie a silver Doctor, but I have been tying to many of them lately and they are getting way to easy. I wanted to tie fun flies that I felt were good looking and yet would compliment Bergman since all the patterns tied for this swap can be found in his book Trout. We need to get together and fish and talk awhile. Also need to talk to you about the possibilities of tying some classic wet flies for your Trout Unlimited chapter meeting. Talk to you later. Currently working night shift and off tonight and Tomorrow. Working Friday through Monday and then back off on Tuesday and Wednesday. Least days off will be fishing days in the middle of the week. Have every other weekend off so yard and house work always gets done. Seems there is never enough time.

Classic Wet Fly Swap

Andy,
I would definitely like to get together and fish. The KLG seems to be closest to both of us, or maybe up on one of your favorites, Willowemoc. You are always welcome to come to Hacklebarney TU to tie your beautiful wet flies. We meet the second Thursday of each month, except for July and August. I'm thinking of tying some wet flies to try on our chapter trip to Connetquot in late April. They usually stock a lot of brook trout in the spring, and I read in the Bergman book that the colorful wet flies were designed to fool brook trout.
It sounds like your new job is keeping you very busy. I'm glad that you were able to land one quickly.
Regards,
Rich

Rich:

I think fishing both places is a go this year period. Now far as tying some wet flies for your trip, I would think of the following:

1) Cupsuptic

2) Kineo

3) Silver Doctor

4) Scarlet Ibis

5) Leadwing Coachman

6) English March Brown, Male and Female

7) Yellow Sally

and an old pattern that will work well there that is not one of the Bergman patterns, The Picket Pin. Now the first three patterns I listed are an adavanced tie for you and might be a little difficult. The first two were origionally made for Brook Trout in upstate Maine. They should work just fine on stocked brook Trout in Long Island. I would tie these wets no smaller than size 8. Also recomend to fish these larger wet flies with an Intermediate sinking line. Also if any rainbows are present, I would not be without some Captains and Pink Ladies.

At the show I mentioned to you I was tying in up in Williams Port PA, I was introduced to Mr. Albert Eschenback who you will find written about in the 1952 version of the book Trout. Mr E. Hille talks about a fly called the Carrot that was designed by Albert. You can see this fly on plate seventeen and read a brief write up on this fly and the story on page 193. I will tell you that this fly I would bring along if risers or semi risers are occuring. Very simple dry fly to tie and a good fish catcher. You know me and old forgotten flies and patterns. Fish this fly this year if you can. I think you will like the results. The reason I mention the 1952 book is because this year the book was expanded, revised, cleaned up and four brand new plates by Doctor Burke were added. This was Doctor Burkes last plates to ever be painted. Doctor Burke passed away. Ray besides losing a good friend and Surgeon knew that without Edgars work, Trout could never be ever expanded upon again. The 1952 book is a treasure to a lot of us in the Bergman society. So like Paul Harvey says, "Now you know the rest of the story, Good Day".

P.S. Let me know if you need any help tying wet flies or if I can answer any questions you may have while tying them.

Well, lets see, I just bought my PA Licencse yesterday. Would be a damb shame and a mortal sin not to go and use it as much as possible. Wet flies, hmmmm, yeah I think I remember how to fish and tie with these. Might be a good way to fish and pass a so so day that is bright sunshine, clear and blue skies, fresh air and the sound , feel and smell of fresh running water. Not to mention a few lousy willing Trout who don't know any better and take beautiful wet flies for lunch. Well if I have to, Damb, I'm there! Will gladly hook up with you and fish. I will be fishing this year a few new streams too, I will go after Lycoming Creek, Big Pine Creek and the Loyal sock, after that I will fish any where in the state. I have off every other weekend and shortly I have off every other Monday Tuesday and Wednesday Thursday. I will be taking advantage of these week days off this year and fish. My job is a rotatitng shift. I work a month of days and then a month of nights. I work in operations thats open 7 X 24 365 a year. Weird hours. You work three twelve hour shifts and one eight hour shift. So basically it means I work three days and I am off two, then work another three days and am off two. Since the work week runs from Sunday to Saturday your time always adds up to 40 hours. Night shift sucks but I can bear a month at a time. So you can say that kind of sucks, but the day shift works so right and the time off equals great fishing with less people on the streams because there working and I'm off. Anyway we will hook up this year and go fishing.
