Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

Big Flat Brook this weekend

A Polinger

Just finished a River Runs Through it!
Of Fri. my wife is going shoping so I am going to go fishing at the BFB. I have not been there in about 2 months. Has anyone been there in the pasty few weeks and if so what secting and what was working.

Thanks
AP

Wuz there last week, we camped at Stokes right on the river (beautiful). Walked & fished the small pockets north of 206 - nada! Then tried down stream 206 to Roy. Spotted some in the larger pools but no takers on steamers or nymphs. Still great to get out there anyhow :skunked:.

Well, believe me I am far from the authority on the BFB, since I've been there 4 times over the last month or so and have only one baitfish sized chub to show for it, but this is what I have observed:

Just last Friday I was up in the fly fishing section and seined both clinger and swimmer mayfly nymphs in moderate to fast current. Size 14 was prevalent with some 16's in there as well. Brownish olive was the coloration, making a Pheasant Tail nymph a good choice. I also seined a few stoneflies, both golden and black, in the fastest waters, a crayfish, some good-sized hellgramittes and only a few cased and free caddis. It's no secret, but for matching the aquatic insects, seems like a #14-#16 Phesant Tail should do well.

I was up at the KLG and Musky last weekend and what works there usually works at the BFB. Glo bugs seemed to be the norm for most of the guys on the rivers. I fished them for a little, but had more luck with pheasant tails and scuds. I'd give the sucker spawns and weighted streamers a try too. Best of luck.

A P,

I was there Sun morn(In the snow). One of the pools off 206(don't know the name). One brown on #18 BHHE. Missed a good hit on an olive zonker. Have been there a handfull of times since the weather cooled down. Black, olive buggers, zonkers and small nymphs. There has been the occational rise but I have not figured out what they will take on the surface.

p.s. Resist the urge to jump in for a swim. That water is COLD!:cold:

pmj,

buggers and zonkers were #8-#10. Black was the color one day, olive the next.

I was up there yesterday, although I was bird hunting. Lots of water in the river, and I didn't see anyone fishing so you just might have it to yourself.

I strongly suggest you wear some blaze orange!

Dont be afraid to try white zonkers in addition to the black ones. Attached is a picture of a bow that i caught roughly a week from today two years ago on the BFB. Although black can produce well this time of year on the BFB dont overlook white.

Artee, I knew that bow! We became good friends. Then one day I watched someone haul him out on a stringer. Bummer for the both of us.

AP, Sorry, I was out of town for the week, hince no post. But, I've been having my best luck fishing a BHPT under a GRHE below an indicator to get that perfect deadly drift. Still a good number of big fish in the river between 206 and Haney's Mill. They are spread out though, so you gotta do some hiking. Hint: Fish the horse trail.

Pheasant hunters everywhere, so be careful.
