Beer and fly fishing

Some fly fishermen are, in my opinion, drinking beer inappropriately when they fish.

I personally do not drink, but I have no problem whatsoever with people who pace themselves reasonably. Perhaps 1 beer every 2 hours is reasonable, with a strict limit of 2 per day.

I say this because it is important to represent ourselves well as sportsmen, and sportsmen simply don't abuse alcohol. Last week, I saw a guy with a beer in his hand while casting on the Neversink, which I think is a disgrace.

Whatsay'all?

They ought to make an example outta that guy. Cut his casting hand off.

Depends on what he was drinking. Can or bottle? Micro-brew or mass produced swill? I personally find beer to awkward to fish with. Too heavy and bulky, plus theres the above mentioned image problem I carry a flask. And true to my recently outed snobby ways, it only contains premium scotch or tequilla.

Was it a coors lite? im sorry GB i was there all day and was thirsty..

I prefer a few sips of whiskey when I'm fishing, just because it's a nice way to spend a break, sitting on a rock with a cheap cigar and my flask. If I'm in the mood and it's a good place for it, a can of beer and a sandwich is always great before a mid-day nap.

I love beer. I love all beer, from the gay Bud Select 55, PBR, IPA's, Dark's, Light's, Wheats, Pilsner's, Ale's, Lager's, (all beer falls into either the ale or lager category, ales are top fermenting yeast and lagers bottom), but the sport of fly fishing does not lend itself to beer guzzling while fishing, so this is how it works...... while fishing a flask is most appropriate with a cigar as kyle and nazi suggested, but a well packed cooler should be waiting for you in your car or truck when you are finished, and should be offered and shared liberally with other sports that you may come in contact with. and a good outdoorsman always walks away from the woods or the stream with more debris than he carried in.

Very useful information, and practically speaking one of the better posts I've seen in a while.

I really have no problem with other people drinking beer.....as long as the can or bottle get carried out by that person....NOT BY ME!!! I myself have a little sterling flask (taken off a Waffen S/S soldier in the Ardennes by my uncle) that I have filled with either Makers Mark, Knob Creek or Bakers...all nice sipping bourbons. A little snort every now and then seems to do the trick. I have yet to develop a taste for scotch...and I'm 56 yrs old.

I am considering a flask of my own. Yours sounds like a cool piece of history.

What year was that? 1944 or 45?

Beer in the stream? Not me. But nothing beats a fine stout in front of the fire upon return from the stream.

According to my uncle. it was December 18, 1944...two days after the start of the Ardennes offensive, which everyone else knows as the Battle of the Bulge. I asked hi many times why it couldn't have been on the 17th....which is my birthday...Dec 17th, 1953. You're right about the historical aspect of it. Many people ask me why I actually use it and if I'm afraid of losing it. I tell them because my uncle Marty would have wanted me to use it.

If I'm fishing that's what I'm doing, fishing. If I want to drink beer I go to my deck or the bar. While on a canoe trip I may have a few but not many. Alcohol and water (esp. moving water) aren't a good mix.

I think you make an excellent point. If one is fishing, that's what they're doing.

I'm not sure if it is possible to do multiple tasks at once, or there would be a word for that.
