Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

anyone ever fish new zealand?

Fishizzle, I use worms but I'm looking to upgrade!
When it comes to fly fishing bucket list destinations, New Zealand might be at the top of my list. In doing some preliminary research, it seems like flights to the south island(where I've heard the best fishing is) are pricey. However, I've heard of people flying into Auckland and renting/purchasing a car at a car auction and using it to get into the more trout filled regions, and then reselling the car when they get back to where they fly out. Logistic wise, this obviously will require some planning, so I'm just wondering if anyone has done it before and could give me their general consensus on the trip planning to get me started thanks.

Sounds expensive.

It is but arent all bucket list adventures on the expensive side and a major reason why we havent done them yet? Gotta pay to play. A quick youtube search will explain why I have it at #1

My buddy did new zealand and he just lived over there for 6 months working at lodges and whatnot which helped pay for his trip. If you want some contact info shoot me a message. Buying a car overseas is a pain in the ass. I bought a dirtbike to get around south America and it took forever to go through the process of title and insurance so look into all the details before you head over.

Not sure if I could justify spending all that money to go there. If I'm going to fish a place full of socialists and commies, it would probably be the kamchatka peninsula in Russia. I know, Russia is a democracy now and has been for a while.

Anyways. When do you plan on heading to New Zealand? It sure is beautiful there, but it is quite a haul. Kamchatcka is within my reach here. I think I will do some reasearch and see what it costs to get over there.

Yes I actually lived there 9 years,Im a citizen and have a house there in the Shout Island (in Nelson).I have books and DVD's if you need them just get in contact .Yes is far a way but the fishing is great, nice people and very easy living. We are planning to go back maybe next year.

He can add shitty web page designer to that list also. That web page must be from the days when Al Gore had just created the internet.

Its Vermont, what do you expect. If you've ever been there, you'll understand. Things happen slooooowww up there.

I like your idea about Kamchatka, you don't have to worry about commies, just rickety-ass soviet era helicopters and bandits. You'll have armed guards watching your back, which is about par for the course for that part of the world.

The experience is much different from NZ though. In NZ, its all about sight-fishing because the water is so clear, and the trout lie in wierd places because they have no natural predators, but they still act like trout. You don't put them down like you do here, but they "go stiff", and just stop feeding when they see you. I've looked into both, my bucket list involves both places.

Found one place in Kamchatka that offered steelhead trips, for "science research", that was only $11,000 per person.

I would have like to have gone and fished New Zealand. Some guys from here went down to Australia for training recently. Wish I could have gone and stayed down there a couple extra days to go fishing!

If you go, some places to fish Ahuriri River, my son caught several 20+ browns on this water. Wattaki River,Oreti River,Oahu Canal are all spots he fished while they were there. He talked to two anglers who flew in from the North Island just to fish the Ahuriri R.
