your rod inventories!

My god..I only have 15 minuites before work and thats no where near enough time to list ALL my rods. Got two closets full and they are all hanging up. No wife and no kids make for lots of time for fishing! My answer is " I have lots!"

LOL. That's awesome. I JUST got into fly fishing and I can already see how collecting rods can become a kind of obsession :p I have a heavily modified car so I know how buying things can get out of hand lol.

For some reason, I'm obsessed with short (7'6" or lower) light weight (2-4wt) rods and I can't seem stop wanting them! I already have 3 rods (2 were given to me) and I know I want 2 more already!

The last time I took inventory, there were fourteen.

I'd have to take another inventory to list them all and their uses.
It would take over an hour to dig them out and list uses. There'd be a lot of duplication on "uses" because, over the years, there were upgrades, (a lot of the fiberglass models were replaced by graphite and/or cane).

The most frequently used:

Streams & rivers:
  • 8', 6 wt general purpose, nymph, streamer, large drys (also used on lakes/ponds for drys).

    7-1/2', 5 wt for drys

7', 4 wt for small drys
Lakes & Ponds:
  • 8-1/2', 7 wt for streamers & small bugs

9', 9 wt for large bugs and (with a Hi-D sinking line) deep water streamers.
A lot of guys would question my use of a 6 weight for NJ "general Purpose" as being a little heavy. However, 90% of my stream fishing is with weighted nymphs and streamers (usually with droppers). I find a 6 wt can handle two or more weighted flys more easily than a 5 weight.

I was actually thinking about this the other day. I may eventually look into getting a 6 wt per your "recommendation".

As far as my rods, I only have four:

Sage FLi 5wt/8'6"/4pc for NJ
Winston Ibis 5wt/9'/4pc for bigger water
TFO LK Pro 3wt/7'6"/4 pc for tight WTS, spring creeks
Redington 8wt/9'6"/2pc for salmon

Then again, I only started fly fishing this time last year.

As of right now I own 3 rods:

TFO LK Pro 4wt/8' that I use for everywhere in NJ

Orvis Clearwater 6wt/8'6" that I love using in the winter with big streamers and multiple nymphs

Redington Crosswater 4wt/7'6" that was replaced by the TFO after I broke the tip(got it replaced by Redington though)

I'm going to try to build my next rod which will be a 6'6" 2wt

I have recently been pruning down my flyrod inventory but here is what I have now:

8ft 4inch 5pc 4wt Winston w/zebra wood reel seat
7 1/2ft 4wt swelled but Orvis Peens Creek Batten Kill
9ft. 5wt. 3pc Winston IM6 w/Zebra Reel seat
9 1/2 ft 5wt. 4pc Winston BiiX w/ graphite reelseat
9ft. 6wt. Orvis Clear Water
9ft 8wt. 2pc Orvis TLS
9ft. 9wt 2pc SAGE RPLXI
9 1/2ft 9wt Winston BL5
9ft 10wt. 4pc Orvis PM10

Most of my trout rods have down locking reel seats... I am not a big fan of uplocking reelseats.

Once you build, ya just can't stop...

two 2wts, three 3wts, five 4wts, one 5wt, one 6wt, one 7wt, one 8wt
In progress, 5 rods
Anticipated new for this year, 3 rods
Sold four since the fall last year

Dave

I have the low end rod (hope I got the series 1 right... ) and they've
changed the naming I believe... so the one I got last year was the
$100 rod, ok? :D

that said, it's great for the money, a medium flex. the higher end
rods (I believe the TiCR series??) are fast action.

I'm not a discerning rod reviewer but hope that helps !

rods

8'6 5wt Sage SLT- Trout and Bass Small Rivers and Ponds
7'9 3wt Sage VPS- Trout- Small Creeks
10 ft 6wt Orvis Trident- Steelhead
10ft 7 wt Orvis Trident- King Salmon

Right now I have over 20 rods. Most of them are bass fishing stuff, mostly casting rods. But hey, this isn't about stuff to chuck hardware.

I used to have a lot of fly rods, but I've been paring that collection down a little.

2wt 7'6" 2pc St. Croix Legend Ultra
3wt 7'9" 3pc St. Croix Legend Ultra
5wt 9'0" 4pc St. Croix Legend Elite
6wt 9'0" 4pc St. Croix Legend Ultra

I had another 5wt and a 2wt 6'6" Native Custom which gave to my brother. I sold a Sage 3wt a while back. I'm not going to count the others I had many, many, moons ago.

I might get rid of the 6wt. It's the only flyrod I have now I didn't build myself, it's factory stock. I kind of like making them myself.

Cool collection Scott. I like the theme :) I'm actually looking at a 6wt. st. croix rod and a few other rods (SP/SLT) for my "big/wind" rod since my next rod down from that would be a Winston Ibis 8'6" 4wt a friend gave to me recently as a gift. If it doesn't go through, I may want to see how much you'd want for your 6wt.

Hey hondo how do you like your JP Ross rod? I was looking into buying one of their rods but am not wild about their NEW warranty. With their new warranty if your 43t breaks and it is out of their one year grace period it will end up costing you a minimum of $200 to repair it.

Wylie

i really love the JP Ross, the rod has some backbone to it, I have caught quite few fish in the 18- 24 range on and had no trouble. It roll casts nice and I find for dry fly fishing because of it medium action it is a pleasure to cast.

Regarding the warranty, not as good as some of the others out there because as I read it they give a 50% breakage credit after year one toward a new rod. Looking at the workmanship, the quality of materials and the fact it is US made I think it is worth
more that its $280-300 price it sell for.

7'9" Sage lightline 2 weight- Homemade (me)
9' Sage GFL 6-7 weight- Dave Mc Neese made
8' Winston 4 weight- Homemade (me)
9' Scott 4 weight- factory G series
9' Scott 5 weight- Homemade (me) G series
9' Scott 6 weight- factory S3 series
9' Winston 6 weight- factory IM6
9' Scott HP 9 weight- Homemade (me) Stripers!
9' Scott HP 10 weight-Factory- Big stripers

I want to add one more rod to my arsenal: a 9 ft 4 weight 4 piece for travelling.

Sweet collection Hondo. I see you're another lover of St. Croix LU rods. One of the rods I want to pick up soon is a JP Ross Beaver Meadow! What weight is your "Little Beaverkill?" Do you still use all 3 of your 4 wt rods or do you just concentrate on one or two of them?

Brian

Another 9ft lover Cingras :D nice rods.

I've noticed when people like a particular brand of rod, they keep buying them.

If I make up my mind to sell the 6wt.. well, we'll see. It's a good rod... :)
