What's your Favorite imitation?

What are your all time favorite trout fly's? Streamers, Mayflies, caddis, midges, nymphs, Stonefly's, attractors, wets, Wooly things, or Terrestrials.

A wise old man (and new dad) once told me "Caddisflies always work!!!" :D

Dennis, your advice has worked for me. The rivers I have fished have smaller mayfly pops than some of the NY Gems. But there ALWAYS seem to be some caddisflies around, and imitating them pays greatly for me :)

My Two Favorite fly's are Wets and Streamers. I could not narrow it down to just one choice due to I fish Heavly with both. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Another vote for Caddisflies - henryville special being the favorite of them all followed up by different CDC patterns.

Put me down for a great caddis hatch anytime. Love seeing those fish come flying out of the water. Andre

Give me a big stone fly nymph and some bouldery pocket water.

Oh, and some wild fish would be nice, too.

I can't really nail down my favorite , but if I had to I could have only the foloowing patterns in a fly box
yellow stone and wooley buggers for the bottom, hare's ear, leadwing coachman, yellowdun and royal coachman for wets and for drys humphy ,adams, cahill, henryville, and a few quill patterens in different colors.

Good reply Ruddy!!For me it's almost the same.I have a few patterns that i wouldn't leave home without!

1.Hares Ear 16-22
2.Pheasant Tail.
3.Caddis.
4.Scud.
5.Midges(My favorite now)

I like Midges more cause no matter where i went and i seen rising i know i could find a Midge pattern that would catch a fish or 2.Black and gray are me favorite colors when Midging and fish seem to like them.Another one of my favorite patterns is the Black Fly Emerger from Midge Magic! It's simple to tie and the fly will catch fish!I have been luck enough to catch fish on this fly on every outting!I also tie it in Gray and it sometimes works but the fish like the Black and Gray better.

Hi Guys.

Seriously, my favorite fly is the one I see fish rising to! However, I like to fish mayfly and caddis emergers in the film to risers. Underneath my old stand by is a PT.

hmmm

For a single type of fly, I have to say attractors... I love tying on a big fly that can practically be seen from space... Generally speaking, the bigger the fly the harder the hit! As I mature as a 'fly fisherman', I'll probably work my way around to mayflies...

favorite patterns

Bar none, my fly fishing capablities have exploded with the intorduction and use of the venerable Pheasant tail nymph. I use several variations, but it's a born pheasant tail. Unbelievable.

My favorite fly is the Griffiths Gnat but love to fish streamers - my favorites there are the Muddler Minnow and Mickey Finn

My "not favorite", but one that I use if nothings going on is a Rainbow Trout Streamer. Now like I said, it's not my favorite fly, but when nothings going on, it seems to draw attention.

Fellows:
I catch most of my trout on bead head nymphs: pheasant tail, olive or gray krystal caddis. I usually fish them below a Wulff fly.
But, I adapt based on the conditions and location.

Rich T

Dang, i started to fill this post out hours and hours ago, and then got sidetracked, and distracted about a dozen times during the intrim.........jeeze. I actually had it done, and it got zapped somehow the first time. Anyway........i'd probably have to say that i'd just as soon fish a caddis in any stage of it's life, (prefering the adult or emerger), larva, puppa, emerger, adult or cripple, or spent.......than just about anything. For trout that is. My all around single favorite fly is probably the Usuall, which is not nessessarily a Mayfly or Caddis. It's basically an attractor fly, or a searching fly, ie: something to "Prospect" with. What is so cool about it is.........that you can fish it right smack up on top, dead drift. You can skate it. You can fish it as a popper, by using little very short strips to make it go under and pop back up. You can let it finally get water logged and start to sink into the film, and it makes a perfect emerger. You can trim it down and make it ride low. And more........it's extremely versitile. When fished as an emerger you can trim the wing so it really looks more like an opening wing case. Very cool fly. And THAT's why i'm using it in the one fly contest this June. By the way, the date has been changed for the contest and we are now calling it a One Pattern Contest. Because you will be allowed to use as many of that same pattern as you like all day. Just stick to the one pattern. The contest will be on Fri. June 4th. Allan Podell (Mayfly) will be tying as the special guest fly tyer, at the CFFC&M on Sat. June 5th. Hence moving the date for the contest to the 4th. Although Allan is not going to be in the contest, my wife is. And she and i always go watch Allan tye when he's at the CFFC&M. And we will again this year, obviously. As i hope you all do. That's only 3 hours out of your day........VERY well invested. Not to mention the fishing right there in front of the CFFC&M is wonderful, as is up or down stream from there. So, hope to see you all there.......now don't be square. mark.................

Mayflies.....cdc emergers and comparaduns during a major hatch is the most thrilling part of flyfishing. Thats why I love the Catskills.

To get back on track...lol. My favorite imitation is the Caddis. I love tying them and I love fishing them. Up here in WNY we get an unbelieveable green drake hatch that comes off the Niagara River. So much that they cover vehicles. This is a cool bug to immitate as well. We fish them off the break wall on the big Niagara River. Not Wading Waters!!!

Gotta agree with ya' NJFred....
Stuff in the film...and spinner falls of Hendricksons, Sulphurs, Baetis. ...although I guess I'd have to add Maine's Hexagenia emergence & spinner falls along with our Golden Stone hatches.

....so ya' wanted just one eh'

Green Drake Spinner ( coffin fly )
Big , Huge, Enormous Streamers ( Brown Zuddler ) I like feeling the fish hit.

I hate Nymph fishing ( probably because I suck at it) but mostly becuase until you lift the fish is generally passively eating in its respective lane, and the hook up initiates the blitz ( run, albeit that initially it can be very exciting, because you just suprised and ****ed the **** out of fish) but still does not compare in my opinion to the fierceness of an opportunisticly feeding fish, even if the fish is selective, he had to move to eat that Thang!

Spider -- love see those fish attack the fly. Second would have to be a tie between a cricket and a Stonefly Stimulator. Love seeing those huge browns engulf the fly like the barbarian they can be...

The bigger, badder and most initimidating fly is my favorite - the cuisine of SAVAGE BROWN TROUT around the world.

If I had to go with my #1 pattern -- go to go with the 1/0 BLACK SHENK SCULPIN!!

I would have to say a soft hackled fly. Can't narrow it down more than that because I have so many "favorites". I use soft hackles whether I'm after tiny brookies or steelhead. Being a subsurface guy, I love soft hackles for thier ability to work in so many presentations.

I favor two, both very productive for me: BWO mayfly and elk hair caddis with touch of cdc under the wings.

I guess my favorite is nymphing with a heavily weighted Black Latex stonefly in the fast runs. I pick up some pretty decent fish on the Pocono streams that get overlooked by other anglers using this method.
