2016 Fishing Trips

What are your plans for 2016 trips??

My 2016 is gonna look something like this.

Once the snow and ice is melted enough for me to get down into the gorge, I'm gonna focus on getting my Tipi camp completely setup. It will be in a new location this year, within a 15 minute walk of my favorite pool. Last year, it took me 3 weekends to chop down the 30 odd trees necessary and transport them down into the Gorge from Jersey. Because I spent the first month of Spring working, I almost completely missed the Caddis hatch. This year, I hope to have the tipi pretty much finished by the time the caddis start popping so I can take some time off work and fish it hard.

My Dad, Brother-in-law, and a family friend will hopefully be coming out in Mid-May for a long weekend. Probably do a day in the Gorge and a day on the Upper D.

In late June i'll be going back to MN to try to hit the Hex hatch on the straight river. This river is short drive from my cabin (in walleye country where nobody gives a shit about a trout, a river, or a fly rod). I've done a few scouting missions there, but I've only caught chubs (these missions have all been in August when the fish are likely all hunkered down on a cold spring somewhere). The river is not your typical trout stream. It is like a swamp. The banks are all cattails and wild rice, but it is spring fed and runs cold(ish). 20+ fish are commonly caught during the Hex.

Once it gets hot, I'm just gonna try to acquaint myself with the Upper Delaware system a little better.

Montana in September...hopefully the Slide Inn......I look forward to fishing the "Kiddie pool"....anyone want to go?

Keep me posted on how you make out on the Straight river. I have fished it about a half dozen times but have never done well. Be sure to do some musky/Pike fishing when back in Minn.

Two - three days a week (Tue - Thu) on the Delaware May 01 - June 25. Two weeks in MT late June to July 10, alternate weeks on the WB looking for heads and the Susquehanna for big smallmouth, steelhead Oct 01 - Nov 30.

HOW???

It doesn't seem like much of a destination. Do you have fam in northern MN?? I spent every summer in Hackensack MN til I was like 15. Just weekends after that...

This guy makes it look easy, but yaya i've been twice and only caught chubs -- Misjudging a Book by Its Cover | Adrift // Fishing + Culture + Life (this guy's blog is consistently awesome and well written, as well....)

I'm usually only up there in early August nowadays. The river heats up and the fish are probably all concentrated on the springs.

I'm gonna be up at the cabin March 5th and one of my goals is to x country ski the bank and mark all the places with open water on a GPS. A crude way of finding the springs...If I end up doing it, i'll pass the info along.

If you spend time up there, you should PM me for dirt on Bass/Pike lakes. I'm talking unnamed lakes in the Chippewa national forest that see absolutely no pressure. Great spots to bring kids because it's non-stop action. I've had 15 Bass an hour days...

My trips in 2016 will be limited.. lots and lots of trips to the local bass/carp pond because its about three to four blocks from my apartment. Hope to do a Great Lakes trip in March for steelhead which is about the worst time to go... but that's when I have off from work and you have to go when you can go. A trip to the Lake Erie area for Carp. A few lower Delaware trips for Stripped Bass swinging flies. Maybe a few trips to the PA creeks that I have neglected the last few years.

Would also like to get into fishing Spruce Run Reservoir from shore for bass carp or whatever else.

We finally bought the home [closing in two weeks ] near the West Branch and Susquehanna that we've been looking for, for a long time.
it's actually a farm with a 7 bdrm house ,3 barns and a large commercial shop ( new home for the Hyde and Fishrite ).
Hopefully will hit them a lot this year after we move in there in the spring. The Susquehanna is across the road across a small field and the West Branch is about 10 minutes away. Hopefully we'll see you on one of your floats.

Two weeks in July somewhere in WY, we'll start back in the Wind River Canyon and then hike into something later in the trip.

Two weeks at the end of Aug in AK.

Might bum around New Zealand for the month of Nov. but that ones iffy.

Also wanna try n get three hornbeck canoes built for me and the boys this year. Would love to pack those into a high country lake in the Winds and around the Daks. If not this year definitely next and then Michigans UP will be on the agenda...

Nice Boats WB! I have a 16' Hyde fiberglass high side and a 16' Fishrite aluminum drift boat. I've been thinking about a small outboard for the Fishrite for the Susquehanna. I'm sure I'll see you out there.

I now run a 55# thrust electric motor on the Hyde. It gets me through the long pools on the main stem like Lake Lenore or from Cemetery to Knights in less than five minutes. Also when you have a strong up river wind it is very difficult to make any headway. The motor solves that problem. I'd love to put a 5 horsepower gas motor on it but am pretty sure the guides would like to tar and feather me at the least.

I also have a two man Perception kayak, a Poke Boat, and a Bucks Bag pontoon boat for the Delaware and a frameless Creek Company pontoon I leave at the lodge I stay at in Montana.

Quite the fleet WB! I just have the 2 drift boats. I had a 21' center console that I just recently sold . You should throw the 5hp on the Hyde so you could troll big streamers up and down Bard Parker, I'm
sure one of the regulars there will cheer you on!😀

Yes, and I'm quite sure all four of my tires would be punctured. I wouldn't have much concern running a gasoline motor down below Lordville as there are very few wading anglers and I have seen gas motors there before.

You don't need a motor you boob... You need to hit the gym!
